Okay. I know that putting your shit out onto the internet means that you essentially can't control what people do with it, even if YOU DO HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL THEM TO STOP, BY THE WAY. But "Twilight in Fifteen Minutes" is now floating around on MySpace without my name on it, which I should have expected, quite honestly, but putting in "© 2008 Cleolinda Jones" invisitext is a pain in the ass and it annoys people, so I didn't do it this time. Well, I've gone back and put it in. So if you read Tw/15M now and highlight something and see the invisitext and it annoys you, well, this is why we can't have nice things.

It's also really, really funny when someone copypastes it and runs off all like, "HAI GUYZ I FOUND THIS THING DONT KNO WHERE IT CAME FROM HOPE U LIEK IT" and posts something like this without paying attention:
EDWARD: I AM VAMPIRE. HEAR ME TWINKLE.
© 2008 Cleolinda Jones. Please quote or link back, do not repost. m15m.livejournal.com
BELLA: Oh, wow, I spent like $60 at Sephora trying to get sparkle like that. What is that, Urban Decay?
I've actually seen that with a couple of the Harry Potter 15Ms, in fact.

(You know what makes me mad? Not that they made off with my shit, because that's what people do and it's not really very surprising. It makes me mad because it's like, come on, I know you know better. I've made it abundantly clear that I am politely asking you not to do that. And if you got it from someone else who didn't credit me, well, they should have known better. You wouldn't want someone to do that with your shit, so why would you do it with my shit? I just really have not wrapped my mind around the notion that people on the intertubes do not have any common sense, I guess, and you'd think that after ten years I would have come to terms with that, but no.)

(Oh, and by the way? There was a Creative Commons graphic/license on that thing from the moment I posted it. See how very terribly effective they are?)

(MySpace. Why did it have to be MySpace? Of course it was MySpace.)

After all the anxiety you went through to give your fans something awesome, you have every right to be mad when people repost your stuff without credit to you.

Also, I think your Cleo!Smash icon would have been much more fitting for this one. ^_^

Yeah, I thought about using that icon, but I decided to restrain myself. People always get on to me for fussing about people on the internet doing what people on the internet do.

You're putting the invisitext in by hand? Ouch. I could probably write you something to do it automatically, if you like? (When I'm done with my consulting job.)

Date: 2008-12-05 07:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
See, I like doing it by hand. That way I can put it between exactly the lines I think people are most likely to copypaste. (It's the personal touch that means so much.) And it really doesn't take that long, maybe two minutes; it's more that it pisses me off that I have to do it at all.

That is so rude. Also, stupid. I mean, you're known. It seems pretty likely that someone who has been here will eventually see the theft and correct the perpetrators/report that it's happened.

This is coming out wrong. I'm not saying it's okay to steal from less-popular writers, but stealing from someone who is so popular for M15 that it resulted in a book deal is just....stoopid.

Date: 2008-12-05 07:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Well, people think I'm better known than I actually am; the vast majority of people on the internet haven't heard of me. At the same time, there's frequently one person who has heard of me, somehow, by the time you get a crowd of commenters going, and that one person is how people get busted.

Crap, Cleo. I'm sorry you're getting abused like that. I find it oh so much easier to just post/send links to your stuff, not copy/paste it.

This also, incidentally, has a side effect of getting people hooked on your journal. ;)

Date: 2008-12-05 07:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] greyduck.livejournal.com
EXACTLY! I mean, hell, it's almost infinitely less work to simply post or send the link to the original than it is to copy-pasta the whole damned thing... which, near as I can tell, you'd only do if you're trying to make it look like you wrote it in the first place, really. Ugh.

People suck. Sadly, not always in the fun and happy way.

I was explaining my usage policy to my girlfriend the other day, mostly in the context of why I wasn't going to use the ICHC image she sent me for the upcoming Caturday Moti-Vent poster. (They, uh, really don't want you doing ANYTHING other than making macros & posters for use ONLY on their site. Love all that fine print!) One of the things I'm doing is trolling DeviantArt for source images... and if there's a CC "no derivatives" license attached, I leave that image the hell alone.

Because I don't want to be one of those people, you know?

(Oh yeah, for those of you playing along at home: Here's today's Moti-Vent Calendar entry snarking on Twilight (http://greyduck.livejournal.com/42182.html).)

Dude, quotes and snippets and things are fine. That's how people get interested enough to go read the whole thing in the first place. *I* post snippets and excerpts of things for that reason. But if people are posting the whole thing, they've clearly removed any reason for anyone to go visit the original, and that's when it becomes a problem.

From: [identity profile] kayay.livejournal.com
Do you not mind if your work, in parts or in its entirety, is posted elsewhere as long as it's credited and/or linked back to you?

I don't know what's so difficult to add a name or URL to the text when passing things like this around. It's extreme laziness I suppose.

Date: 2008-12-05 07:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
What I'm okay with is, "Hey guys, I thought you might like to see this! It's [title] over at [link]!" ("By Cleolinda" is great, but if you've got the link, you've covered the bare minimum.) "Here's a few quotes from it!"

What I'm not okay with is the entire thing reposted under any circumstances. There's just no need for it, you know? And it removes the need for anyone to go see the original, and I can't guarantee that the next person won't swipe it from that repost WITHOUT noticing who really wrote it. So reposting in its entirety, even WITH my name, is the problem; reposting it WITHOUT my name is just insult to injury at that point.

Go check the end of the Tw/15M thing--there's a yellow/black graphic there you can click on. Basically, you choose the rights you want to state and pick the corresponding graphic and text. It's not something you have to register or anything; it's just a statement of what you're willing to allow. And then I usually add a few specifics ("icons are cool").

I agree. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could put some kind of code into text (say, [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's M15M) that, when posted on MySpace could somehow... burst into virtual flames, and flame the person who stole it, if proper quoting/author rights were not used?

Someone needs to write some kinda code like that, to stop things like this from happening...

Dude. No. I saw this on the Twitter and was all D: about it. Reading the comment pages was depressing enough, then I remembered it's MySpace and oh hey, I'm surprised anyone stepped forward to say, "yo, this is someone else's work!" before you said anything.

I'm pretty sure this is why writers tend to be a secretive bunch and don't show anyone what they're working on unless threatened with pain of death (or maybe it's just the writers I know?) -- last thing you need is to put all this effort into something only to have some douch copy pasta it away. At least this one didn't claim it's her own work. It's a small concession, but a concession nonetheless. D:

And for every douche, there's bound to be people who are willing to stick up for your creative brains. You have internet champions!
