That DirecTV campaign

I've found that DirecTV campaign tone-deaf almost from its start; the only commercial that's appealed to me was Shatner's (he knew it was self-parody and he can do self-parody). I wish the campaign hadn't gone to Poltergeist either, and I turn the channel when it comes on, but I've done that with a lot of those ads.

Still, creepy, and I wonder how many people who worked on that ad felt a little uncomfortable with it.

I thought it was a little tasteless and I'm not one of those who get offended about every little thing.

BTW, I love your icon! Good Omens is one of my top five books.

And now the icon

Captain Picard's Twitter feed?!

Captain's Log: Two nights of consecutive musical theatre is just not enough for this Starfleet captain.

I...I'm just...so happy.

And I finally read your entry on Samson Agonistes today. I've been listening to a lot of Regina Spektor lately, and her song "Samson" inspired me to go back and look the Bible story up, because it's been a while (I remember watching a Samson and Delilah cartoon when I was younger - don't ask). I pretty much came to the same conclusion you did: Samson is a moron with anger management issues.

haha Yes, I actually watched that song right after seeing the alphabet one. The best part about the alphabet one is that it's in one of the season DVD's extras--Patrick Stewart did it for Gene Roddenberry's... birthday? retirement? something. I can't remember exactly what, but I'm leaning towards retirement. heh

re: Twittering

I totally don't have enough of a life to properly Twitter about it, but, you know, it's a thing, and it's kind of fun to try to get a thought out in 140 characters. Like, you know, random things that a rarely-blogger like me doesn't feel warrants a whole post.

Also, if you're not keen on using OpenOffice (nothing wrong with it; I've just had problems with the installation getting corrupt, which is annoying but okay since I keep installation files), I tweeted (http://twitter.com/nanceoir/statuses/950231225) at you about Google Docs, which auto-saves like mad. It's not as robust as stand-alone programs, but it could be good for drafts and quick things or... something, and you should be able to copy/paste it into your chosen word processor with ease.

(Also? I've got Word 2000, so don't feel bad about your '03.)

I'm throwing my agreement in with those who recommend OpenOffice. I've been using this program for several years now, and will never use Word again (except for the pseudo-Word on my PDA). And best of all, 'tis free!

I love how they only listed Kay Redfield Jamison as the author of "An Unquiet Mind," because it would totally take the "news" bit out of the story that she wrote "Touched With Fire," which is about bipolar disorder in creative geniuses, YEARS ago.

P.S. Don't feel obligated to link these, btw. This one is just such a good read I felt I should share.

I'll post it tomorrow--it would fit really awkwardly in today's spam (let's see, after the body in the suitcase of heroin, or after "Superman's dad is dead...again"?).

Out of the two main actresses in Rachel Getting Married, Rosemarie DeWitt is the one I think deserves an Oscar nod. Debra Winger's ten minutes were pretty damn heartbreaking too.

Argh, why does Hollywood need to remake everything? Jar City was so good, and a remake wouldn't do it justice. It was also very specifically Icelandic, so I don't know how a remake would work.

I was wondering how long it'd take for Helena Bonham Carter to get involved in Alice. Isn't it some sort of law now, that Tim Burton is not allowed to make a film without Helena and Johnny Depp?

Okay, I thought this story would amuse you. It's about how a 15 year old girl got pregnant by some guy named Edward, and when she gave birth, decided to name her daughter Renesmee Bella Stephanie. :D You definitely want to read the whole story.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm totally blaming you for the two hours of my life I lost watching The Happening. I really did not think it could be that bad. I mean, I was sure it was bad, just not *that* ridiculously bad.

What did we do to deserve that movie?!?
