As a wannabe librarian, the whole age-banding thing totally rubs me the wrong way. Plus, I was (supposedly) reading at a college level in 5th grade, so if my parents wouldn't have been as cool as they were/are, I would have been screwed by it. (I know it's a UK issue and that we've got something similar, but man...)

The book reading level thing FILLS ME WITH CAPSLOCK OF RAAAAGE. I was reading YA level books (Tamora Pierce, Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles, that sort of thing) in second grade, and I had to make it by on the books my parents could afford when we went to the store, which given that I read 100 pages an hour and wasn't a whole lot slower when I was young, didn't give me much. The stupidass librarian wouldn't let me check out books above my grade level. Bitch. This is why I'm homeschooling my daughter.

For which decision, you rule! (and soon your daughter will rule the world, because the rest of it will be drooling in front of the telly). I was homeschooled and it was a matter of Mum teaching me how to read and then trying to buy books fast enough to keep up with me.

I read Narnia when I was five, started on LOTR and Shakespeare when I was nine, Pride and Prejudice when I was elevenish, and continued in a similar vein. I had no conception of what was, or was not, a classic. So I never learned to approach classics with such reverence that I never dared to read them. I was omnivorous--I read a fair bit of age-appropriate total rubbish (ahhh, Nancy Drew) and learned a trick or two about mirrors and leather with less-appropriate works (ahhh, Candide).

And then, on a whole nother level, what exactly gives these people the right to restrict a kid's library access? Blind leading the blind.

My mom decided to homeschool when I came home from school in first grade with the one age-appropriate library book I was allowed to check out, read the whole thing while standing in the doorway, tossed it on the floor, and never looked at it again. Heh.

I also read Pride and Prejudice, along with Jane Eyre, at eleven or twelve. I certainly disagree with the age-banding thing although it fills me with the eyeroll of irritation more than the capslock of rage. *eyeroll*

It's a made for TV thing from 2001 and it's got Keira Knightley practicing her Elizabeth Swan as Robin Hood's daughter and Stephen Moyer of True Blood fame in it, as well. It's a nice bit of cheesy fluff and it was on TV a couple of weeks ago and I thought 'Cleo would love this'. I dunno, I still hold that Indy IV would have been better if Lucas had just dropped his obsession with the crystal skulls, and what I said after I came out of the theatre was "well, at least he can't use that again". I kind of suspected they'd be considering doing more than four if they ever got around to doing four, and according to the "pattern" the fifth one shouldn't suck, haha. So I guess as long as they stop here...

And honestly, I wouldn't even mind if Mutt was in it as long as he wasn't taking over (I didn't have any problems with him... just the Tarzan scene), though I'd heard he wouldn't be in it anyhow.

I echo this comment SO MUCH. My reading age was way high at a young age and I had great parents who encouraged my reading. I now work in a book shop and I get continually quizzed by lazy parents about "what book would be suitable for a _____ year old." No preferences on what topic, or even gender. Generally I'll point them towards the book tokens and give the poor kid receiving the present a fighting chance.

The lowest ever point I had at my job so far? A girl picking out a book that was maybe a little young for her and her mum telling her it was "way out of her reading range" (whilst getting her to pick out what I would say was a slightly more challenging book) and "that she'd only read it once" What's with the only reading once, people?! Books are to be re-read!

When I was in the first grade, our school library would only allow us to check out books from The Lower Shelf[TM]. Back then I was annoyed at having to go to the public library and Miller & Paine's book department for books that weren't about ducklings. Today I'd just say it was bogus and fascist.

Fortunately, the school abandoned the practice in an uncharacteristic fit of sanity.
