HEY FRIDGE FIXER GUY I WAITED FOR YOU ALL DAY, WHERE YOU AT? MAYBE I'LL JUST INSTALL THIS PANEL MYSELF! I DON'T NEED YOU! I DO WHAT I WANT! unless it's on a day when I'm supposed to hang around the house waiting for you

So tonight I'm listening to the podcast to see how it turned out--I think it'll be released this weekend?--and see just how awful I sound. It's not actually the sound of my voice that bothers me, the way a lot of people get bothered--I'm more worried about my actual intonations and speaking patterns making me sound like a dolt. So there's that. I might get a linkspam up later (wayyyy later), but if not, it'll go up tomorrow.

(Hee! I have so much more of a Southern accent than I thought I did. Particularly on the word "my." Mah journal, you guys. Y'all are readin' it now.)

Hee, yeah. I have been v. v. vague and mysterious about it, but some folks asked me to guest on their podcast. It's like 1hr:45m at the moment, so... there will be lots of it.

I'm exactly the same way in regards to my recorded voice. I like the sound of my voice, provided I don't speak the way I converse. In conversations I'm higher pitched, faster, and try to mask my accent--I've been told that the masking makes me sound like I'm from California, which would make sense since I grew up watching TV. When I'm on the radio, I try to pitch lower and slower and smooth my accent down, but not entirely hide it.

Date: 2008-09-11 01:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Yeah, I tend to sound kind of Cali, if only because I have that slightly stonerish vocabulary ("Dude! That is awesome!") if the Southern accent goes and hides. And yeah, when I read (or record a reading), I tend to go slower and enunciate more clearly.

I tend to attempt to clear-ly e-nun-ci-ate each syl-la-ble when I'm speaking to non-Southerners, and therefore they end up thinking I'm from Great Britain or somewhere else. heh.

Nah, the vaguely mentioned project was a job I ended up not getting. : ) The few times I've mentioned this, I've called it "the podcast." And yeah, I did some phone posts from New Orleans. I'm not so much worried about my voice as I am saying something really dumb, but the parts I was worried about seem not to have made it in... so far.

If it's any consolation, you at least have your own TV Tropes page, including being a Trope Namer! (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CleolindaJones).

Which I think you at least partly noticed, given the recent posts I ran across on your JournalFen account, but did you realize you're the Trope Namer for the Littlest Cancer Patient trope? *is so totally utterly UTTERLY jealous*

I think southern accents are kind of cute, if it's any consolation either. ;) That, and at least you don't have a complete Frankendialect, like I do. I grew up in Florida, in a metropolatan area that has mixed accents (as opposed to the rare actual southy-sounding Florida accent), by parents from New York state (one from northern rural NY and the other from NYC). Apparently this leads to some of my pronunciations being odd, according to my mother, though until this was pointed out I had no idea it was anything but "neutral-ish". Apparently you're not supposed to pronounce "merry", "marry" and "Mary" the same way - who knew? Ah, and then there's my tongue always wanting to say "pronunciation" as "pronounce-iation".

Actually, my dad's accent (rural NY state) is kind of interesting. It's bizarrely southern-sounding at times, including phrases like "prick'ner" which is allegedly short for "pretty near", or in other words "very nearly" (as in "that guy just prick'ner caused an accident!"). And yet... it still doesn't really sound like a southern accent. I'm probably lucky I didn't grow up to sound like more of a hayseed, heh.

But yeah, I also grew up watching British comedy and reading British fantasy. So I actually say things like "bloody hell" and "git" (in fact, when my high school English class discovered the latter word but pronounced it "jit", it drove me up the wall), and like to spell "gray" as "grey". Like I said - Frankendialect. At least I outgrew my teenaged phase of inserting random and mostly grammatically incorrect Japanese into it though. XD

Seriously, I was so shocked when someone first told me they had different pronunciations. I still cannot figure out what they might be--we Southerners just don't have the vowels for it, I guess.

I think that's why I find it so interesting to listen to recordings like that--"Oh, so that's what I sound like." I think everyone's voice must sound lower in their own ears due to... acoustics? or whatever. So it's really interesting to readjust your mental image (...sound?) of yourself. And also, I sound a lot more deadpan than I expected. A lot like one of my aunts, actually.

(Despite my username) I have nothing but plain old Great Lakes accent, since my elementary school years were near Chicago and then after that I lived in Michigan. Apparently the Great Lakes accent is about the least pleasant to listen to, since we're big on Rs and stuff like that. Very flat. Boo.

I remember your voice posts from New Orleans! When you talked about finally understanding Blanche DuBois because it's so hot. (NOTE: the reason I remember this is not that I'm a stalker but that I saved it without labeling it so every once in a while I find these audio files and say "wtf is this" and then listen to them and go "oh, it's cleolinda!". When I started on the Summer Music Project, the plan was to record an intro and a bridging segment over a music bed (some non-vocal bit of music from the artist of the week, though I'm not 100% certain I could've found good bed tracks from, say, Econoline Crush). I was certain I'd hate my voice and that'd be why I'd have to give up the idea.

Turns out that my biggest problem was saliva. I get nervous, my mouth waters, so my speech (especially as captured by a cheap gaming-headset mic) ends up with lots of pops and clicks that require tedious editing out wherever possible. After a couple weeks of that, I gave up and resorted to typed introductions and a simple three-song mix.

I'm annoyed that I didn't get to play with the music beds, mostly.

I grew up inside the loop in Houston, so any accent I have is very, very mild. However, I lived in Chicago for four years, and was told by many people, including strangers on the bus, that they could tell I wasn't from there. When I told people where I was from they usually accused me of not having enough of an accent.

There is, though, one word in my vocabulary that is significantly weird. My father, who is from West Texas, is mystified by my pronunciation, as is basically anyone else that has ever happened to be around me at Christmas time. The word is poinsettia.

Now, according to this (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/poinsettia) and the rest of the world, I should be pronouncing it more or less how it is written.

Instead, I say po-in-settah. ("po" as in Oh!, "in" as in in)

People in East Texas don't even say it that way, I don't think. I've checked with my fiancé from New Orleans and I don't think they say it like that in Louisiana. I figured out why I say it that way: my mother says it like that, and she got it from her mother, who grew up in Florida but moved around the South a lot. I would someday like to find whatever magical land it is where they pronounce it like that.
