cleolinda: (galadriel doll)
[personal profile] cleolinda
So I ended up wandering around the Sideshow Collectibles site this morning--I have a few of their LOTR pieces, including a bust of my patron movie saint, Galadriel, who watches over me beneficently from the shelf over my desk. That said, my weakness has always been "figures," twelve inches or taller, usually with fabric clothes, sometimes with molded plastic hair (sometimes with actual wiggedness), better known as "dolls." So of course, that's the section I started browsing. I immediately had a number of interested parties looking over my shoulder.

"Did you ever get around to getting me that Van Helsing?" asks Anna Dollerious. "I hear he likes killing things as much as I do."

"Nope, they're out of stock," I say, quickly closing that tab.

Oh, hee! They have a pretty good Sweeney Todd figure! If they make a Mrs. Lovett, any Mrs. Lovett, I am in so much trouble, you guys. "Does he come with razors?" asks Eowyn!Doll. "YEAH WHAT ABOUT RAZORS?" says Anna.

"He only seems to come with one razor," I say, peering at the photo gallery.

"Well, that's no good!" says Eowyn, swinging Aragorn's crooked plastic sword around. "He'll never put that down!"

"He's supposed to have a whole case of them!" bitches Anna. "I want to play with razors!"

Sideshow Galadriel narrows her eyes. "I really don't think--"

"RAZORRRRRRRS!"

O:< "~I SAID NO RAZORS!!~" >:O

So... that's settled, then.

(Barbie Galadriel just sits on the shelf and doesn't say anything, because Barbies don't talk, silly.)

"Heyyyyy," says Purple Arwen, pointing at the Suparrr-Deluxe Premium Format 20-Inch Sideshow Aragorn doll figure, "I am digging that action right there." Which is kind of shocking, as she's usually so possessive of the Aragorn she's already got. "Oooh, he's got a really big sword," says Eowyn (who is only ever thinking of one thing, really). "And a knife," Anna chimes in (ditto... although it might not be the same thing). I look over at Fugagorn, the Fug of Men. He leans in to get a better look at the pictures. His plastic stubble looks concerned. "Yeah, I... I can't really compete with that," he says. White Arwen and her smushed face comfort him. "Aniron" plays softly in the distance.

"What about her?" says Anna, pointing. "She looks like she knows where the action's at."

"Elizabeth Swann? Hmm. It's just Chinese Pirate Captain Elizabeth Swann-Turner, though. And her hair is plastic." I start flipping through the gallery. "I was really trying to save up for the Tonner Cross-Dressing Pirate Elizabeth... and they both only come with one sword, so there's no weaponry advantage--"

"But Captain Turner is our size," Eowyn points out. "And also, she's a captain, in case I didn't say it loud enough the first time."

"Point taken. I still want Cross-Dressing Elizabeth, though--"

A tiny pistol jabs me in the head. "BUY THE CAPTAIN OR THE EARLOBE GETS IT."

"OKAY, OKAY, GOD. When we have more moneys, I'll get her--"

"Get her NOW!"

"SIMMER DOWN, ANNA, or I'll put you in timeout with the Gene dolls again!"

Anna goes off to fume on top of the CD rack. She hates the Gene dolls because all they ever do is change clothes, and they don't ever have swords or knives or anything.

("Hey, her boy looks pretty good, too."

"And he's got lots of weapons!"

"Down, girl.")

Yay for Gene dolls. Even if they don't have cool weapons!

Have you seen the new Gene dolls? Like, they got a new designer (I want to say Jason Wu...?) and did, like, a reboot of the whole line? I feel... conflicted.

From: [identity profile] padawansguide.livejournal.com
Yeah....it's definitely Jason Wu who is doing the new line with Mel Odom. They're not really my cup of tea, I don't think... the other problem being that I am so totally into ball-jointed dolls right now...

I don't have any BJD, but I'm also a little pissed that I mostly have old-school Genes, and their KNEES DON'T EVEN BEND. They came out with jointed arms and legs pretty late in the game, sadly--I only have two or three. Right now I'm all up in Tonner's business because they keep sucking me back in with the movie characters--and aren't the BJDs pretty expensive?

(And yeah, I am not terribly fond of the Wu Genes. They're just so... I don't want to say "sexy," because that's not the problem. It's like they're just so sleek and over-the-top about it. I loved the more stylized old-fashioned look of the original Genes.)

Date: 2008-09-05 08:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] padawansguide.livejournal.com
Wow, those really are old school ones if they're not bendy! I'm sure a have a few of those. I like the costumey ones of course, though they're all kind of costumey and 40s themed, which I love.

Tonners have terrible resale value now, so I haven't really been buying - or buying as cheap as I can on ebay or secondary market. I hate losing money on stuff like this.

Yep, BJD are kinda expensive, but it's because they're not mass produced. They're hand-cast in resin, hand strung, hand painted, etc.

I agree on Gene, I liked the older stylized look too. Also, I very much like the heart-shaped face mold, they repaint beautifully. I don't like the new sculpt as much.

Oh, and I was late in the game on the Twilight stuff since I was at DragonCon - so my comments are probably buried at the end somewhere, but I loved your recaps. :-)

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Awww, thanks!

(How was DragonCon? It looked fun from your pictures. : )

I saw you set up a Twilight folder, by the way--most of the "costumes" look pretty mundane (t-shirts, jeans. Although the girl playing Victoria is wearing, like, a pelt or something), but I suspect people might be interested in Bella's prom dress, which is pretty simple (and therefore likely to be copied for diehard fans' proms?). Did I ever send you the pictures that Stephenie Meyer posted on her site of the prom dresses she had in mind? They were from the runway, and while Bella's was kind of cute in a very girly/frilly way (and was not used for the movie), Alice's was INSANE.

DragonCon was so much fun! You should totally come some year - you'd have a great time! There are so many great costumes and great panels. It'd be right up your alley! :-)

I did set up a Twilight folder - but I haven't been real focused on saving images because, as you say, it's mostly t-shirts and jeans. If you see pics of Bella's prom dress, send them over!

And yes - you did tell me about the runway thing - I think that's really fun!

You know, after reading all your recaps and the whole growing up Cullen thing, I'm starting to forget that that stuff is parody - I keep thinking it's canon! :-)

I thought I might have sent that over--I will never, ever get over the "Alice" dress. Of course, with Twilight, there's a lot of things I will just never, ever get over.

(I've seen a couple of prom dress pics--I'll send them over. Nothing else is all that interesting, except Victoria and her pelt. And the fact that Rosalie has the same earrings I do. Weird.)

See, I buy to play (well, I mean, I don't play exactly, but I like having them out of the boxes and posing them), so "bad resale value" is actually a relief to me. I feel less bad about it now. It's also why I try to pick out only the ones I really, really want, because I know that once I've spent the money, I'm not getting it back.

And yeah, I love looking at repaints--the Genes always painted up so beautifully. Some of the Tonners do as well--someone repainted a few Elizabeth Swanns to look more like Keira Knightley, and they turned out really well.

The nice thing about BJD is that you can play with them and they don't devalue. I don't buy as an investment, but if I get tired and want to resell, it's nice to recoup some of what you put into it! :-)

There are a ton of talented repaint artists out there. It's so nice to see!

Why is it apparently impossible to create an E. Swann doll that actually, you know, looks like Keira? Those are probably the best I've seen, but still. It bugs, especially since the Johnny and Orlando likenesses are so good.

I don't know, but the cross-dressing POTC2 doll is pretty good. The "yellow court gown" one at Tonner is atrocious, though, as neither the face NOR THE DRESS look anything like the real thing. Of course, trying to put flat-front Georgian gowns on unyielding doll bodies may be a lost cause to begin with.

Are your dolls still encased in their boxes for safe-keeping? Because I gotta tell you, if I gave in to my inner wants and got any of these dolls I'd totally be taking them out and playing with them all the time.

Ask my Hellboy with Ivan doll. He'll tell you.

Shpffff, please. I don't even know where the boxes are. Not for the LOTR dolls, certainly--they were only $19 apiece anyway. And I keep the Gene dolls out of theirs, because God knows I'll never be able to bring myself to sell them anyway.

We're going to need a bigger bank account! Sorry, my attempt at a very lame Jaws joke.

(And Jack Davenport always rocks. :D I did enjoy his Scruffington, but his Lesbian Spank Inferno monologue is pretty much the best thing ever. Have you seen Ultraviolet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169501/)? It's good for the Davenport and interesting take on vampires factors.)

Dolls! I have dolls.

I have Spike (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=2007) from Buffy - but mine was the limited edition one with the changeable hands (one pair with gloves one without).

And I have two Phantom of the Opera's: Mask or the Read Death (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=3214) and Normal Phantom (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=32062). I might have this one in the color version too I can't remember. My PoTo stuff is still packed up until I have a place to put it.

But Spike and Red Death Phantom are in their boxes on top of my computer cabinet. Now I just need to add a Snape doll to the mix...

I have to hide Krueger cuz he would totally freak my kids out. Hell he freaked me out a time or two when I forgot he was turned on. He's an 18" figure and I can't seem to find him online. There's a "New Nightmare" one but not the one I've got. Got him at Spencers around Halloween I believe.

Yes - and now resistance is futile. *sigh*

In any case, I hear there are cookies over there, so I guess it’s not a total disaster…

Honestly, when I first read about that particular doll, I was struck with the mental image of myself stumbling clumsily to the bathroom in the middle of the night, only to hear Freddy’s voice cackling something sinister at me.

Yeah…I’d probably only wake up half the neighbourhood with my screaming. It could be worse :)

It still sounds very, very cool, though.

Say, that Sideshow Aragorn actually looks like Viggo Mortensen! A first, I think.

Man, those are some pretty dolls. I'm supposed to be saving up for a BJD body, dangit. >:(

I get more trouble from my action figures, though. Ever since I put Hellboy and Yotsuba next to each other... And now every time I go looking at Revoltech (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revoltech)* figures (http://www.flickr.com/groups/revoltech/pool/) I never here the end of it. At least those are quite affordable though.
