Date: 2008-01-31 02:09 pm (UTC)That said, I was absolutely flabbergasted that for those UK residents who
don't mind giving money to Murdochhave satellite, the new series of Lost will start on Sunday. I'm not sure you can realise how completely unprecedented this is, normally we get US shows months (or even a year or more) behind! I can only presume that it's possible because they're doing the whole season without breaks which is how tv is always broadcast here. That said, it's still a bit of a risky move I'd have thought, given that the Writer's Strike is still ongoing. Won't they run out of episodes in two months?no subject

Date: 2008-01-31 05:58 pm (UTC)I think it does make a lot of sense for them to show it in the US now - for the next two months they will probably have very little competition. Frankly if I were them I'd have been showing as much Lost as possible in order to catch non-viewers up. However it making sense in the US doesn't mean it makes sense for Sky to immediately show it here. We haven't got a writer's strike on, so we've got the same programming we always do. So it hasn't got that edge. And if it ends in two months and they then have to wait ages for further episodes... well that's just not how tv is broadcast in this country. So it's weird.
I mean, we should be seeing the new Desperate Housewives round about now (it's started in January every other year) but there's not been any sign of that. And I can only presume that's because Channel 4 (who also had Lost before it was rudely poached) realise that UK audiences aren't going to tolerate a big long gap in the middle of a season.

Date: 2008-01-31 07:41 pm (UTC)This time, I think they'd planned a short 16-ep season (as you may have noticed, an American season lasts 22-24 episodes) and just do it that way from now on--two (three?) more short seasons with the end of the show in mind and call it a day. Except that then the writers' strike hit, and they only had eight scripts done. So they truly didn't mean to do the stupid-ass break this time; they intended a full season run of 16 episodes. If the strike magically ended tomorrow, maybe they'd be able to start cranking them out again and try to catch up, I don't know. But the break is going to last as long as the strike does (plus the time it will take to film the other eps), pretty much.
