Happy belated Fourth of July, y'all. We spent it eating barbecue and multiple chocolate-based desserts, while my stepfather played drums (in Revolutionary costume, no less) down at the American Village. The pups got neutered yesterday and came home this afternoon as frisky as ever, so that's safely been accomplished. And I was all like, "With everyone else home to watch the dogs, I'll really be able to get some work done!" Yeah... not so much with that. It's been a lot more eating and shopping and movie-watching and dozing. However, we do have tickets for Midnight Harry Potter, which is at least something

Ratings for Bush, Congress sink lower. "Like twin Jacques Cousteaus of the political world, President Bush and Congress are probing the depths of public opinion polling as voters exasperated over Iraq, immigration and other issues give them strikingly low grades." I don't know if it's impartial journalism, but it's got flair.

Preteen sisters accused in kidnapping.

11-year-old charged with driving drunk. In Alabama, of course.

5-year-old pins rabid fox to protect family. Okay, that's what I want to hear about the children of America doing.

From the I'm Disowning All of Humanity files (seriously, just skip on down to the next paragraph if you're having a bad day): Man accused of biting off 3-year-old's lip, ear; Dinner guest finds host's wife, son in freezer; Police: Boy forced into sex with mom by teenage gang. What is wrong with people?

Anti-gay ad is no match for Colbert’s logic.

Al Gore's son arrested; Experts: Pills are the new marijuana.

New Drug Deletes Bad Memories. O hai, I loved Kate Winslet in that movie.

Gene test hurts pregnancy chances.

Final candidates for new seven wonders.

Nepali "living goddess" fired after U.S. visit.

Russia wins 2014 Winter Games.

Orgasm clip spices up EU meeting.

Money falls from sky.

"Potential Breakup Song," Aly and AJ. The one with the curly hair is on the Disney Channel (but we won't hold that against her); the one rocking out on guitar is fifteen. They're sisters; they write their own music, play their own instruments, and sing just as well live (according to Sister Girl). Damn. Can we hear about these two instead of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton all the time?

xkcd: All Your Base.

UR NOZE I HAZ IT.

Uninterested cat is uninterested. He really is, y'all.

Stephen King Says 'Goodbye' to Harry Potter; J. K. Rowling "Euphoric and devastated" When Writing the End of Harry Potter; "Scar" no longer the last word of final book; Radcakes, Man of the World:
"Girls who want to go out with me just because I'm famous has never been a problem. I'm 17. I don't care. Obviously, if I wanted a deep and meaningful relationship then I wouldn't want to be going out with somebody who is only with me because I'm an actor, but if you don't a relationship like that then it's fine."

However, Daniel is adamant he wouldn't stay with a girl who called him Harry during sex.

"People do call me Harry. I once had a friend call me it by accident. If there's another person in the room called Harry and somebody shouts their name I do respond slightly, which is embarrassing. But no one has ever said it in the throes of passion. That would be the end of that session. Go now!"

It's the "I'm 17. I don't care" part that cracked me up.

Pompadour LeBeouf and Ancient Indy tooling around on a motorcycle: "Slow Down, Kid! It's Not Like A Truck Full Of Nazis Is Chasing Us!"

More Cloverfield Mysteries: Everything I'm hearing from movie news sites seems to confirm that it's a monster movie of some sort, and that it's mostly unknown actors and a few mildly recognizable faces. The two Ethan Haas sites are interesting because they seem to point to some kind of alien influence, but I've also heard doubts--mostly on the IMDB boards, where they point out that "Ethan Haas" is a character on some TV show--that it's even related to Cloverfield at all. On the other hand, the Ethan Haas videoclips have also been removed from YouTube by Paramount, the same as the bootleg untitled-movie trailer. So I don't know. 11 year old??!? Drunk? Driving?!?! WHAAAAAAAAAAT. That is...so, so wrong.

Along with the Disowning Humanity links. Those made me die a little inside.

Also, I kind of pity Radcakes. I can't really imagine being so famous at my age (I am 17 also) and I would think, honestly, that it would really kind of fuck up your childhood, etc. Well...obviously (coughlindsaylohancough).

Yeah, I knew about them before--my sister loves them, and would play their cover of "Walkin' on Sunshine" a lot. I could tell they were good, but had a hard time getting into it because I've always disliked that song for some irrational reason.

Yeah, I've never really liked "Walkin' On Sunshine" either...except when Fry sings it on Futurama. ^_^

They have a really good song called "Chemicals React".

I have also never been able to enjoy "Walkin' on Sunshine". I do approve of Aly&AJ, however-- two blonde pop starlets I could presumably get behind. They're sisters-- half-sisters? Step-sisters? I forget, but in any case they start getting a little reminiscent of TaTu halfway through the video. Catchy song, though.

I am inevitably jealous of pretty 15-year-olds who have a lot more talent and success than I ever will. Is that wrong?

Thanks for the mention. I'm completely okay with the fact I may be way off base, but it's been too much fun. Hell, even the techy look of the Ethnhaas site fits; some of the Vedas describe weird things. I need to doublecheck my stuff, but I believe there are some references to the Gods being very strange and perhaps mechanical. Also the weapons these dudes use in their wars are straight out of sci-fi manga, except that they're centuries older. (that's a joke, folks; a lot of manga gets their odd and crazy weaponry/symbolism from the Vedic texts)

Why do I think the new Indy movie is just going to make me sad? Indy sitting in a bar having shots of Ensure. Indy having a high speed chase on a hover round. Indy dozing off during the exposition scenes. It's too sad to comprehend. Hopefully Shia LaBeouf will inject some coolness.

Prescription drugs are definitely something to worry about. I've been addicted to them to an almost alarming extent, still am, but now going on 5 months clean...eesh...people definitely need to start paying more attention to them.

Also...I think its funny how in the comments people think Daniel looks like Elijah, and Jake Gyllenhaal...another one who is always mistaken amongst that group is Tobey Maguire...and occasionally Wes Bentley...they should all play brothers in a movie together...all of them have such pretty eyes...(we can throw in Topher Grace as well...)

cheers

Re: Aly & AJ (http://www.blender.com/guide/articles.aspx?id=1937)

Given the pronounced Christian overtones in the home-schooling movement, we can’t help but ask the girls for their thoughts on that cultural hot potato, intelligent design.

Do you believe in evolution?

“No,” AJ says, shaking her head and frowning.

“Wait,” Aly says, bolting forward. “Are they teaching that in schools now?”

They’ve been teaching it for the better part of a century.

“I think that’s kind of disrespectful,” Aly says. “Anything that has to do with anybody’s beliefs on religion, that should stay out of the classroom. I mean, I think people should be able to pray in school, if people were into that. Everybody should just do their own gig.”

“Evolution is silly,” AJ adds. “Monkeys? Um, no.”

I've been weeping about the state of science in this country for years now...

Just look at the way that question is always asked: "Do you believe in evolution?"

Believe in? Doesn't belief imply religion? Isn't science something that is hypothesized, theorized about, and experimented on? Well, it is unless grant money politics is involved, I guess...

As far as education goes, I think all plausible scientific theories (including, but not limited to, evolution) should be taught.

And Alvin and the Chipmunks 2.0 are seriously creeping me out right now...I may have to go pop in my DVD of The Chipmunk Adventure to make it go away. Or Die Hard. I love Die Hard.

Yeah. The throe-iest your passion should get at 17 is a hot and heavy make-out session in the backseat that gets cut short so you can be home for curfew.
