Okay, so I have just gotten home. Very orderly thoughts:
1. That was so fucked up. I... I kind of don't know if it was awesome or not.
2. Aw, hell, who am I kidding? It was fucking awesome.
3. It started out a little hinky. Things seemed kind of... off. Line readings, the cheese factor was a little too strong, I'm not sure what.
4. Maybe because it was Pirates: The Musical! for the first two scenes.
5. (Okay, the Littlest Pirate gets hanged, I'm still with you. But: "They're... singing." Beckett: "Finally." Wait, what?)
6. And then Multiple Jacks showed up, and it was like, This Is Not the Good Acid. The whole thing--the whiteness of the background, the trippy doppelgängers, the general weirdness--so reminded me of something, like an homage to someone or something. Dalí? Seriously, help me out, it was so an homage to something.
7. Also, I had no idea that Johnny Depp licking things could be made unattractive. He must be really, really proud of himself.
8. I love that the monkey blew up Singapore.
9. (If they didn't have a ship, how did they get to Singapore?)
10. I knew that Norrington and Governor Swann were going to die. Not because anyone told me; I just knew. Maybe it's because I watch too much Lost, but I just had this feeling that they were itching to kill people off. "Make it dark," whatever. I'd thought that Sao Feng would last until the final battle, so I was startled but not really surprised when he bit it. Because, again: killing people off.
11. NOOOOO! NOT MY KRAKEN! *rending of garments*
12. When Jack suddenly decided that he wanted to be captain of the Flying Dutchman (which immediately felt wrong, because Jack Sparrow + The Black Pearl = OTP), I knew that wasn't going to happen, because Johnny Depp had been quoted everywhere as saying that he would be willing to do more POTC movies. You can't have The Further Adventures of Captain Jack if he's stuck on the Dutchman, right? So who's going to captain it, because I'm pretty sure they're not going to let Davy Jones live? Well, there's Barbossa, and I guess there's Will, who "has a touch of..." Oh shit. And that's when I knew--by that time they had gone into the whole Davy Jones/Tia Calypso One Day Every Ten Years Thing, plus Sao Feng had randomly decided that Elizabeth was Calypso--I knew that they were totally going to put Will and Elizabeth into the same situation. I'm not saying it's fine cinema, but there's something about them actually going there that took the movie to a totally different level in my mind. Normally, this kind of thing would end with a big splashy wedding, like the one that got interrupted (last year I'd put my money on Jack showing up with Scarlett and Giselle, and you know what? He still showed up with them at the end), and no matter who died, there'd be a big bow wrapped around the ending. So I'm actually kind of--"pleased" isn't really the word, but I admire that they went for something different that had specific thematic resonance; they looked at the story they had so far and took it to a logical, bittersweet conclusion. And all three of these movies have been willing to go for--not always something shocking, necessarily, but they've been willing to go to that tragic place rather than just be glossy and happy. That's one of the things I always liked about the first movie, that it's actually sad and serious when Jack ends the curse and shoots Barbossa; I liked that they made it mean something. And then the second one, of course, you have the fantastic scene where the kraken (RIP, sniffle) comes for Jack and he goes down fighting. It takes the movies to a level that's a lot more epic, not because the battles are bigger or the effects are more expensive, but because real things are at stake, and actual sacrifices are made, and not everyone wins.
13. And then, an hour into the movie, a screw popped out of my glasses and was lost in the deeps. The sticky, sticky, bepopcorned deeps. I spent the rest of the movie--nearly two hours, mind you--pinching the frames to keep the left lens in. This is another reason I am going to have to see the movie again. Oh, darn.
14. Keith Richards is a surprisingly competent actor.
15. I KNEW he was going to end up being Jack's father. I mean, the original news stories about it totally said that, but then they said the character had been changed to "Captain Teague," and I was like, I don't care, he's totally Jack's father.
16. Elizabeth Swann, Pirate King. AWESOME.
17. Awww, Davy Jones has to stand in a bucket, because... you know... the every ten years and... a bucket, y'all.
18. Attack of the 50-Foot Calypso: Not... what I would have hoped for, really. The effect (the scale? the perspective?) didn't seem quite right, for some reason, and the voice they chose was just... not on. It just sounded very Generic Exorcist Scary, rather than Dark Galadriel Cool.
19. (As much sense as Tia Dalma = Calypso makes, I really, really wish they had somehow mentioned Calypso, even just in some kind of offhand, idiomatic expression--maybe one of those random things Gibbs says--in the second movie just to let us know then that she exists in the POTC universe. Because so many things were foreshadowed in Dead Man's Chest, the whole Calypso,Greek Goddess of the Sea thing seemed sort of shoehorned.)
20. Wow, chicks don't usually get to make That One Speech About Freedom That Someone Always Makes Before the Final Battle. Rock.
21. The one time our audience broke into applause: "DEARLY BELOVED--!"
22. Epic Pathos aside, I didn't mist up until Will said, "Keep a weather eye on the horizon." What? Nothing, I'm just--adjusting my broke-ass glasses. *sniiiiiiiiff*
23. (Will! Use your head! Get a bucket!)
24. Taking my mother to see this movie is going to be hellish. "Where are they? Is that China? Who's Calypso? Why are there so many Jacks? Why would multiple Jacks be hell? Is Will with the bad people now? Why is Will with the bad people? Why doesn't his father remember him? Why Elizabeth is Calypso? Well, why isn't she--" OH MY GOD.
25. Late-breaking addition: I stayed until after the credits (more adjusting of glasses). And then I came back to check my email and found a comment from
sualocin (or followed to where sualocin made the comment) to the effect that THERE WAS ACTUALLY A HAPPY ENDING:

The quote from the writers I was gonna share with you is: "The captain of the Flying Dutchman curse can be broken and that's why Davy Jones was so furious with Calypso. If the captain's true love is waiting for him when he comes ashore after 10 years the spell is broken and he is no longer bound to the ship - he's free to live a normal mortal life on land again. A new captain is chosen to continue the 10 year cycle. When Davy returned to shore after the first 10 years Calypso was not there to meet him. The curse was not broken and he was doomed to remain captain for eternity. SO when Will comes back after the first ten years (since Liz is waiting for him with their son) the spell is broken and Will can join his family for the rest of his life."OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER. ETA: I'm hearing now that this may not be a real quote. I kind of don't care, because--if nothing else--it makes the Davy Jones-Tia Dalma conversation in the brig make more sense. Also, LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU IT REALLY HAPPENED. ETA 2: Okay, here's what it is: a true statement from the writers restated in the words of

Date: 2007-05-26 07:14 am (UTC)Oh, and I'm glad that Davy still had a big presence in the movie. He wasn't in the trailers much and I was worried that he wasn't going to show up much. That would have sucked, because I thought he was awesome in DMC.
Oh, and the second time I saw it I was stomping feet along with the pirates when they were singing their song at the beginning.

Also I got chills when everyone was singing at the beginning...this movie was way better than two, and almost as good as one imo...definitely one to be viewed on the big screen...the whirlpool fight was godly...especially with Zimmer's themes amping up the energy.
I could go on and on, but I've taken up enough of your board.

Date: 2007-05-26 01:10 pm (UTC)As a matter of fact, though, I seem to remember that Davy Jones's tentacles etc. were a punishment for his abandoning his ferryman duties: as long as he did what Calypso asked, he got to remain human. So if Will had decided to wear wet boots for the rest of his life, he would have been able to stay with Mrs Turner (squee! squee! *cough*) BUT she'd probably have objected to tentacles.
I was hysterical--in some kind of seventh heaven--during that wedding ceremony. So awesome!

Date: 2007-05-26 09:51 am (UTC)21. "Dearly beloved?" What scenes was that again? Our audience applauded when the little guy was thrown backwards after firing the handheld cannon.
A few more thoughts:
Characters wasted:
Norrington: Was sooo cool in the second movie and then they kill him off in this typical "bad guy turns good, helps others and dies for it" way. Gah!
The Kraken: simply washed up on the beach. Aw, man!
Sao Feng: Somehow he annoyed me, I would have liked him to be less of an asshole and more helpful.
Characters with great development:
Beckett: Even more arrogant and mean than before. Excellent villain. Only didn't like the way he died, or more precisely that weird walk he took before that. Didn't seem real.
Elizabeth: I mean considering who she was in the first part, becoming Asian Pirate Capatain, then ruler of all Pirates and holding a Braveheart speech is pretty cool. Keira was very convincing actually.
Jack's dad Keith Richards: Just a really cool cameo.
Barbossa: The whole being competitive with Jack thing was fun, he was mostly on the right side but still a mean bastard with his own agenda. I am glad they didn't kill him off...again.
Tia Dalma: I did not see that coming, her being a sea goddess. She was also oddly attractive.
I didn't like Jack's doubles and the little Jacks on his shoulders. I expected something cooler as the afterlife state he was in until he met the others on the beach. I dunno, it just felt a little too weird and silly.
The tipping the ship to get back was pretty cool, though.
The final scenes of Jack, coming back to the beginning of the first movie was basically perfect :)
no subject
Date: 2007-05-26 11:42 am (UTC)I also disliked the continuation of Jack's doubles into the real world.
I agree with you about Norrington.
Towards the end of the big battle, it seemed like a lot of plot threads were kind of dropped or thrown together into a big heap. There was no real resolution to the situation between Jones and Calypso (and the accents each actor used for those characters, along with dialectical phrasing and the sound mix, made it hard to understand what they were saying sometimes, which means that I think I only caught about 80% of their brig scene). Beckett, who was supposed to be this badass villain, and who certainly seemed worse than Jones to me - because Jones' bad behavior was based on a broken heart, and he was a tragic figure, and Beckett was just a sadistic authoritarian ass - Beckett spent the climax of the movie sitting at a distance, drinking tea. OK, maybe he'd do that, let his problems destroy each other without getting his hands dirty.
But the way his death scene was handled was... the cooperation between the two ships, to pull it off, was cool, but the fact that it had to happen at all was anticlimactic. It was a relatively banal way for the character with the most hubris to die. And that's one reason why I think Norrington shouldn't have died... I think it would have been a lot more interesting, and redemptive, if he had killed Beckett himself. Failing that... Norry might not have wanted to become an outlaw again, after all... I still would have liked for him to survive and, perhaps, meet another "fine woman," maybe in the closing scenes of the film.
Also, somewhere else in my replies here, and also on my own LJ, I agreed with you about Elizabeth's depth of awesomeness in this movie, but at the same time, it was that very level of awesomeness that irritated me about her decision to sit alone on a beach for ten years with nothing but a chest containing her husband's heart. (Eventually, also with her kid, but she had no way of knowing she'd have him when she went there.) This would have made more sense if the curse-breaking procedure were actually *in the movie*. That she can break the curse if she's absolutely there in 10 years is the only way I can believe such a girl would want to do such a thing. I also would have liked to have seen where she went ashore - since her kid had clothes and a hat, it seemed like she either had visitors or there was a town nearby, but we never find out.

that's probably what i liked most about the movie. yes, i was totally pretending not to cry at the end, and was majorly bummed out until i read your #25 (!!!!), but i still think at the end of everything, it made sense. there was no other way to do it. plus, the characters knew that too. i keep saying this, but there was just so much personal growth, of all the characters, that even though some of scenes were almost painful to watch (like will and elizabeth at the beginning - they love each other so much but they've both hurt each other so badly they can't even trust each other).
on a side note, i think the bucket was probably the funniest/cleverest idea EVER. sorry if this seemed incoherent, it's ridiculously late and at this point, i'm just rambling.

Yeah, I'll have to agree that Chow Yun-Fat's character should have been given more to do, or lost completely.
Ditto Beckett's final walk.
Yeah, I'm thinking DVD deleted scenes for the meaning of the whole "Finally, they're singing" bit. And for the ninja chick's fight with Beckett's henchman - that semi-omission was just weird.
Anyone else saw a resemblance between Will Jr and the littlest pirate from the beginning? (We didn't get to see that scene, because local theatre owners are total fuckers).
Also.

Date: 2007-05-26 11:14 am (UTC)I thought Jones's bucket was more of a basin, but yeah.
I agree that the Calypso release transformation looked off. I thought it was the worst effect in the movie and could have been a lot cooler (imagine if gigantic-goddess-Calypso had emerged from Naomie Harris's mouth in water form and towered over them all, then gone up into the air, then down into the sea, and the maelstrom created in the wake of her dive).
I also agree that the beginning was clunky and that the movie improved as it went on.
I'm glad to hear the writers' explanation about the whole Flying Dutchman curse, but at the same time, it should have been more clearly explained in this movie, which kind of had too much crammed into it (though not in as bad and irritating a way as Spider-Man 3). The writers for Veronica Mars did that all the time - resolve major lingering questions, like "Did Dick really tell Cassady to rape roofied Veronica?", only in interviews - and it tended to tick viewers off after a while. (In that case, the answer was that he hadn't, but if you didn't hear about that particular interview, you'd go on wondering why Veronica's only reaction to Dick was eyerolling disdain.) It also happened in The Return of the King, where a sequence only a minute or so long that explained what happened to major secondary characters (Eowyn and Faramir) was cut out of a movie that was already so long that it wouldn't have mattered. This would have worked if they were shown at Aragorn's coronation suddenly noticing each other, but in fact they're shown standing together like an established couple, when both of them were at death's door - and had never met - the last time you saw them in the film. The resolution of the major romantic relationship in a movie franchise in which viewers are very invested shouldn't be left to what winds up looking like retcon, especially in a way that leaves such a bad taste in people's mouths.
I appreciated their willingness to not do the "Big Wedding, but sniff sniff, neither person's dad could make it," ending that I was expecting (in a version of the script that went around last year, and was confirmed as a genuine earlier draft by Terry, Bootstrap died, but I haven't read the end of it because I didn't want to know how it ended). You're not the only person who just assumed that Swann would be killed in this one... it seemed inevitable. I thought Norrington's death was wasted.
HOWEVER... I was really ticked off by what happened to Elizabeth at the end. Ten minutes earlier she was king of the pirates... now she's willing to sit in the middle of coastal nowhere for ten years, waiting for Will and having a baby on her own in the meantime? (And how convenient is it that she happened to be ovulating on the single day they were able to spend together?) That seemed like changing the character to suit the plot. You have to know that her being there in 10 years was the only way to break the curse, otherwise it looks like the character has been changed to suit the plot. Without knowing that, I wondered why she didn't just go off on a ship on her own and make plans to meet him on land every 10 years. Plus, even with his duties, there was no convincing reason actually depicted in the film that Will couldn't board whatever ship she managed to acquire whenever he wanted.
My money was on the actual end of the film being somewhat like the end of the series Rome, where Titus Pullo and another character were chatting and walking away from the camera viewpoint down a crowded street, until lost from sight. I thought it would be Jack and probably Gibbs, maybe the rest of the main hero-crew, either on a ship headed somewhere, or walking down the street to a tavern to get some rum.
Anyway. I think I liked it. I'm just not sure. I probably need to watch Dead Man's Chest and then see it again.

Hee. So true.
Does it make me bad that I... don't particularly care about the Will-and-Elizabeth plot? I mean, I assumed that if there were ever a Pirates 4, they could hardly have Will's Exciting Escapades Ferrying Dead People, so it'd just be Johnny Depp and Geoffery Rush doing stuff, which would be awesome. Cos Will and his three facial expressions kind of bore me.

Date: 2007-05-26 12:58 pm (UTC)I never cared much about Will & Elizabeth's destined loooooove, because I never cared that much about Will, and that extended to Bootstrap. DMC would have been a lot less convoluted and lengthy without the father/son scenes on the Flying Dutchman. I like Will and Elizabeth, but I would have liked for them to break the heck UP already.
I know, I'm a cynical heathen.

Wouldn't he go all squiddy then?
Calypso just seemed weird, and kind of cartoonish with the big voice.
I cried when Elizabeth's dad died. I cried even harder when Will grabbed her to stop her from trying to bring him onto the ship and held her until she calmed down. SO SHIPPY.
"DEARLY BELOVED-" oh man, that was awesome. "YOU MAY NOW KISS-"
*thrust thrust stab* "YOU MAY NOW-" *stab stab* "YOU MAY NOW KISS THE-" *parry dodge stab* "JUST KISS!"

The whole thing--the whiteness of the background, the trippy doppelgängers, the general weirdness--so reminded me of something, like an homage to someone or something. Dalí? Seriously, help me out, it was so an homage to something.
Uuuhhh Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?
AND OMG YAAAAAAAY! THEY CAN BE HAPPY! Because as much as I agree with you on #12, I was still like "WAIT WHAT? NO! HAPPY! LOTS OF BABIES! SWORD FIGHTING LESSONS AND BEING TOGETHER ALWAYS! NOOOOOOOO!"
