As [livejournal.com profile] derangeddarling points out, there's a replica tie-in ring on Amazon*--but it's the silver ring (left side of the picture; bottom of picture). But that's the thing--it's a ring you see prominently before they get to Tia Dalma's. Which only makes it weirder that Tia is specifically shown with that ring on the official site. (They've added a token-collecting game--yes, a second one--since the last time I mentioned it; the ring was not there in the original version of the site.) To complicate the question of whether Jack took her necklace or not--people seem to be saying that he leaves it on the table and takes only the ring--Jack is shown wearing the necklace on the site. But you can also see a smaller version of the same green and silver ring (Tia's is so large because you're supposed to click on it) on the correct hand. BE MORE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR CLUES, PEOPLE!

* Wear Johnny Depp's ring! One of Johnny Depp's own rings, worn to the set one day, looked so perfect for the character of Jack Sparrow that it was quickly adopted as part of the flamboyant pirates costume.

"Hey, man, can we make replicas of your ring?"

"Uh... that's kind of creepy, actually."

"Excellent, we'll get right on it!"

I actually just saw it again last night and I was paying attention to see if he took the necklace or just the ring and it was the latter. Sadly I didn't pay attention to the ring itself but I'm pretty sure it was the one with the purple stone you mentioned in your last post.

I barely remember anything about this ring/necklace thing, I suppose I'll have to go & see the film again to try & pick up on it.

I love that bit about it being one of his own rings, heee.

In those shots both the ring and the locket look pretty pastede on yay. I'm wondering if marketing didn't talk to Gore and Ted and Terry before building the game.

I can point out that by this point (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/hrichards/Random/274fe65b.jpg) in the third movie he's still wearing the gold ring, for what that's worth.

He is still clearly wearing the green stoned one, too.

http://wherestherum.com/potcjackmap.jpg

But, he *did* have that one before he went to Tia's. I'm just confused why they would be mass producing it if it wasn't important. I mean, the other big item is Davy Jones' key, not even Jack's compass....

Did anyone manage to see what it is he pockets *before* he snatches the ring? He definitely steals something else.

See, I was pretty sure he grabbed the gold ring with the reddish/purple stone ... and now I'm all confused.

I'm guessing Johnny bring a lot of his own element to a movie. If you've seen Secret Window, watch the featurettes and he brought some of his own ideas to that too.

Sorta-OT here, but... Does anyone have any tips for rendering Tia Dalma's accent phonetically?

A phonetical transcription of any of her lines would be too awesome for words, but I don't think I can get one of those just yet.

I was going through the site and that confused me to no end. I was like...I'm sorry, but Jack only took the ring. Yall are screwed up.

BUT when you click on the necklace after you have it in your "plunder" boxything, the description says, "Antique Necklace. Rumor has it that this once belonged to a Spanish heiress. It certainly speaks of a mysterious bond, a long-lost love, (or thievery, perhaps?)"

SpanishHeiresswtf? Tia Dalma? ...okay. sure. before she became the kinky voodoo tramp of the seven seas.

They did this "let's screw up people who have only seen the movie once, or not at all, by being completely inconsistent and pointlessly foreshadowing" thing for the first movie too. Methinks Disney can be an arse at times. Arrr(gh).

The Ring "thing"

From: [identity profile] kirie-rsm.livejournal.com
Well, maybe someone had previously mentioned this but did anyone else notice that the necklace is a twin to the one Davy Jones keeps?

You see the necklace first when Jack takes the ring off the desk in Tia Dalma's place. You see it again as Davy Jones plays the organ on his ship & it's shown for a brief moment sitting before him on the ledge of the organ.

Maybe she is the woman in question who was, as she so flamboyantly put it (while sitting back & smiling I might add) "As untamable as the sea itself"...lol

I saw it today, and he most definitely steals the gold ring. I loved the movie, actually (I heart Pintel and Rigetti so, I loved Rigetti's explanation of why Norrington, Jack, and Will were fighting, haha, and the whole "You can't even read!" "It's the Bible, you get credit for trying!" even though he had it upside down, haha) and Jack was amazing as usual ("Mr. Gibbs, I feel sullied and unusual." "I have a jar of dirt! I have a jar of dirt!").

Did anyone else notice that when the monkey was let loose in Tia Dalma's house that it went straight to a side room and jumped on a pair of legs that happened to be Barbossa's? I wonder how he got there from the cave, apparently he's important enough to save from death, to Tia anyway. That last line was awesome, the one along the lines of "so, what have you been doing with my ship?". Oh man. May 2007 won't be here soon enough.

i too saw it again today, and i made sure to keep an eye on this. the gold ring with the blackish looking inset is definately the ring that he took from tia's. i tried to look to see what he takes before that but they panned away too quick to even notice. so like someone else said, it's either not important or they didn't want us to see it for 3rd movie purposes.

and i have to say that i was smiling and giggling the entire time barbosa was walking down the steps. i heard some whispers of "its jack its jack" and then a couple gasps when they saw barbosa. my friend looked at me and was like "i'm so confused". lol.

I just got back from a re-viewing. As other people have noted, Jack doesn't steal the locket that matches Jones' music box and the Dead Man's Chest. He steals the ring that was next to it.

But, I don't think anyone else has pointed out: When Davy Jones shakes Jack's hand and removes the Black Spot, he's shaking the hand wearing the ring.

And Jones gets his tentacle stuck. He has to yank twice to let go of Jack's hand.

And it's on-camera and it's POINTED that this happens.

Methinks the ring might have a fair deal to do with saving Jack's sorry ass.

As others have said, I saw it again today and it is the gold ring with the dark stone that he wears on his index finger. I don't know why they're making replicas of the green stoned one. And whoever mentioned it seems right, it does seem that Jack takes care not to lose Tia's ring when he is squeezing loose from the shackle.

I hope we aren't overanalyzing this ring. ^.^

And I still didn't catch the other thing he grabbed.

I had a question, though. If the compass just points to Jack for Elizabeth, how did they find the island with the chest? It seems it sends them in the right direction the first time she looks at it, but then after that it always points to Jack. Why would it point toward the island and then not point toward the chest once they're on the island?

Just got back from seeing it again. 2 things:

1) He definitely takes the purple ring that was decided on earlier. And he is definitely wearing this ring at the end when he slides the cuff off... he has to turn it around to slide his hand out.

2) This is just a random thought I got while watching, so I was unable to check details. But remember when Will was stealing the key, and a music-box type object starts playing? It looked like a heart that had been opened, which immediately made me think of the heart necklace. I had the thought right at the end of the shot, so was unable to see how big the heart was. But if this is correct, it supports the idea that Tia was the woman Davy Jones loved.

The plot thickens.

Okay, the sad part here is that I went and read that and immediately thought, "TO MY GIANT COLLECTION OF STILLS, AWAY!" Barbossa only wears one ring, and it's got gold *on top of* the stone (I forget the actual term for that). It would be brilliant if that were Barbossa's ring, but I don't think it is.
