Just got back from The Devil Wears Prada, so let me just say two things about that:

1) Meryl Streep is terrifying. I think "That's all" is going to haunt my waking dreams. (ETA: You know what? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict a supporting actress nomination come Oscar time.)

2) Since we went to the movie on a whim, I hadn't had dinner (or lunch), and my blood sugar was too low to go without getting something to eat. Thus, I found myself in the strange position of eating a (cold) roast beef sandwich smuggled in from Panera during the first fifteen minutes of The Devil Wears Prada, during which time, I am pretty sure, Anne Hathaway is told that "size six is the new fourteen." You may view this as either A) an act of defiance against the consumer-culture media that teaches young women to starve and mutilate themselves or B) really, really sad, as you choose.

P.S. Simon Baker is hot.

"Pirates" reviews mixed ahead of key debut.

[livejournal.com profile] aliaspiral: "Just in case you haven't seen it, because, really, DANCING PIRATES: Pirates of the Caribbean Dance Competition. Dancing! Pirates!"

You forgot to mention that they're dressed like Captain Jack as well.

[livejournal.com profile] katesti: An update from Roger Ebert's family.

Hey, you know what's totally awesome about Semagic? You can actually C&P entire swathes of linked images. Like, even from newsletters you get in your email.

Also, I thought it was more like 10 is the new six, you know, going the other way because of vanity sizing. That whole bit struck me as weird.

Isn't that just worst?

Incidentally, I'm shocked by the idea that I'm skinny enough to be called fat by The Devil Wears Prada.

It's because models today are thinner than models of say, forty years ago, or so.

Did inches lose weight as well?

Seriously, sizes shouldn't change. More can be created, I suppose.

It's not an actual size change, more of a "the industry would rather have 0 than 2, and 2 than 4."

And I think that size 0 is a relatively new invention. *puzzles*

Although it's strange that it's going this way, given that with today's standards, our size 6 is bigger than size 6 several years ago.

I second the love. I had to explain to one of our interns this morning that no, the Keira Knightley version is not the Real Pride & Prejudice and yes, Colin Firth is the awesome.

The point is that these days, you have to be a 0 or a 2 to make it in the fashion industry, and if you're a 6, you're considered a heifer. Hence "6 is the new 14."

It's also important to note that the shorter you are, the smaller size you take; in other words, two people of different heights who otherwise have the same degree of skinniness will wear different sizes. So a really thin girl who's 5'11" might wear a 4, while an equivalently thin girl who's 5'4" could fit into a size 0.

Thus, you'd basically have to be around a size 25 (one step below a 0) if you are a short(er) model.

Wow, that sounds so factual-y and boring the second read-around.
