The Writer Eats Cold Cuts
Jul. 5th, 2006 09:59 pmJust got back from The Devil Wears Prada, so let me just say two things about that:
1) Meryl Streep is terrifying. I think "That's all" is going to haunt my waking dreams. (ETA: You know what? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict a supporting actress nomination come Oscar time.)
2) Since we went to the movie on a whim, I hadn't had dinner (or lunch), and my blood sugar was too low to go without getting something to eat. Thus, I found myself in the strange position of eating a (cold) roast beef sandwich smuggled in from Panera during the first fifteen minutes of The Devil Wears Prada, during which time, I am pretty sure, Anne Hathaway is told that "size six is the new fourteen." You may view this as either A) an act of defiance against the consumer-culture media that teaches young women to starve and mutilate themselves or B) really, really sad, as you choose.
P.S. Simon Baker is hot.
"Pirates" reviews mixed ahead of key debut.
aliaspiral: "Just in case you haven't seen it, because, really, DANCING PIRATES: Pirates of the Caribbean Dance Competition. Dancing! Pirates!"
You forgot to mention that they're dressed like Captain Jack as well.
katesti: An update from Roger Ebert's family.
Hey, you know what's totally awesome about Semagic? You can actually C&P entire swathes of linked images. Like, even from newsletters you get in your email.

Date: 2006-07-06 03:37 am (UTC)You know, this is the first mention I've seen of people fretting over the lack of having a $300 megahit (though it's unrealistic to have ever expected X-Men and Mission: Impossible to do Star Wars numbers) I do think things are going to suck as the latter half of this summer looks very iffy. The movie is under a unique set of pressure, because films that are that massive tend not to have sequels make more...but we've seen it become more more common this decade. And the thing is, Black Pearl barely passed 300 million, and I think anything below that is going to look troubling for some, psychologically.
But I guess after all the record breaking, journalists have become antsy again, especially with the lack of super-performers in June. We've had a muted June, because studios were afraid the World Cup would get in the way, so they released films like Nacho Libre and Click, which never had much international appeal anyways.

They gave Superman returns a 75 percent "fresh" rating, and didn't see any evidence of that 75% when I saw the movie.

The guy who is in these photos must have had the best time ever. This is what nerds write a website about on a drunken bet, not what a chain bookstore uses to promote books.
