Just got back from The Devil Wears Prada, so let me just say two things about that:

1) Meryl Streep is terrifying. I think "That's all" is going to haunt my waking dreams. (ETA: You know what? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict a supporting actress nomination come Oscar time.)

2) Since we went to the movie on a whim, I hadn't had dinner (or lunch), and my blood sugar was too low to go without getting something to eat. Thus, I found myself in the strange position of eating a (cold) roast beef sandwich smuggled in from Panera during the first fifteen minutes of The Devil Wears Prada, during which time, I am pretty sure, Anne Hathaway is told that "size six is the new fourteen." You may view this as either A) an act of defiance against the consumer-culture media that teaches young women to starve and mutilate themselves or B) really, really sad, as you choose.

P.S. Simon Baker is hot.

"Pirates" reviews mixed ahead of key debut.

[livejournal.com profile] aliaspiral: "Just in case you haven't seen it, because, really, DANCING PIRATES: Pirates of the Caribbean Dance Competition. Dancing! Pirates!"

You forgot to mention that they're dressed like Captain Jack as well.

[livejournal.com profile] katesti: An update from Roger Ebert's family.

Hey, you know what's totally awesome about Semagic? You can actually C&P entire swathes of linked images. Like, even from newsletters you get in your email.

Size six is the new fourteen? Is this, like, dress sizes or something? What a horrible thing to say!

Also, I thought it was more like 10 is the new six, you know, going the other way because of vanity sizing. That whole bit struck me as weird.

Hollywood needs a huge hit after a string of major films -- "Mission: Impossible III," "The Da Vinci Code," "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "Cars" -- racked up solid box office but fell short of the eye-popping business generated by the "Spider-Man" and "Star Wars" movies.

You know, this is the first mention I've seen of people fretting over the lack of having a $300 megahit (though it's unrealistic to have ever expected X-Men and Mission: Impossible to do Star Wars numbers) I do think things are going to suck as the latter half of this summer looks very iffy. The movie is under a unique set of pressure, because films that are that massive tend not to have sequels make more...but we've seen it become more more common this decade. And the thing is, Black Pearl barely passed 300 million, and I think anything below that is going to look troubling for some, psychologically.

But I guess after all the record breaking, journalists have become antsy again, especially with the lack of super-performers in June. We've had a muted June, because studios were afraid the World Cup would get in the way, so they released films like Nacho Libre and Click, which never had much international appeal anyways.

It's POTC: the ballet! That filled me with happiness. There was once a brilliant video on Google videos of kids dressed as Harry Potter characters and dancing to songs from Footloose, but now it's down and I can't find it on Youtube. :( Anyone else know the one I'm talking about?

On the Web site rottentomatoes.com, which compiles reviews, the movie scored a 68 percent "fresh" rating.

Well, that doesn't sway me.
They gave Superman returns a 75 percent "fresh" rating, and didn't see any evidence of that 75% when I saw the movie.

You might be interested, but I just got the weirdest set of advertisements in an email from Borders. They're about living better...the pirate way?

Public Speaker Pirate (http://www.bordersstores.com/features/list.jsp?list=piratecommunicate)
Yoga Pirate (http://www.bordersstores.com/features/list.jsp?list=pirateyoga)
Assertive Pirate (http://www.bordersstores.com/features/list.jsp?list=pirateassertive)
Parental Pirate (http://www.bordersstores.com/features/list.jsp?list=pirateparenting)
Baking Pirate (http://www.bordersstores.com/features/list.jsp?list=piratebaking) (also, that recipe is not remotely piratey?)
Hilarious Office Pirate (http://www.bordersstores.com/features/list.jsp?list=pirateshumor)

The guy who is in these photos must have had the best time ever. This is what nerds write a website about on a drunken bet, not what a chain bookstore uses to promote books.

Meryl Streep deserves something for the role, it was amazingly well acted. But it's a chic flic, toss off movie (which I and my husband both enjoyed) so I doubt there'll be much there. *sad face*

(And to bring it home even more--and make your head go all 'splody--watch Prada then follow it by Prarie Home . Tooootally opposite movies.)1

See, I base my prediction on the fact that her performance has gotten a lot of press attention, and there's usually at least one great-performance-in-a-fluff-movie nomination each year. Case in point: Johnny Depp getting nominated for Jack Sparrow. It's more that a performance like this in a widely seen movie sticks in people's minds in a way that a great performance in a smaller Oscarbait movie might not.

I was pleasantly surprised by The Devil Wears Prada. I likes me my handbags, but designers/fashion/stilettos are not high on my list of awesome things. But the film's humour is great -- both of the witty and the 'ha ha! she fell over while carrying lots of things lolz!1' varieties -- and yes, Meryl Streep is excellent in her role.
