Happy Grandma Movie Day! We have located a copy of Emma, conveniently living at my favorite aunt's house, and so here's hoping Grandma likes this one. She absolutely adored Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, so I have high hopes.

Current New Order song obsession: "Guilt Is a Useless Emotion." Which is odd, as that phrase never occurs anywhere in the song. The actual chorus is, in part:
Real love can't be bought
It is wild and it can't be caught
Real love can't be sold
It's another color than gold

(I need your love) I just wanna buy it...
Which cracks me up. As does the later line, "You sure know a lot for a girl."

Linkspam. Apparently the new version of Semagic hinks up my links a lot, so I'm composing in HTML view rather than WYSIWYG. I'm just saying, though--if the links go wicky again, let me know and I'll fix them as fast as I can.

Lost links: Is Lost a repeat? And the new Hanso password site. Sponsor: Jeep. Be careful--apparently you're supposed to go digging through the folders (the Hanso one will take you back to the Hanso Foundation site), but my computer flipped the hell out and opened 92 Internet Explorer windows before I was able to reboot it. Literally, they were numbered (as they tend to be--this happens on my computer sometimes; I don't think it's Hanso-related), and they got as far as 92 before I could get a keystroke in edgewise.

Heroic Computer Dies to Save World from Master's Thesis.

More completely awesome jewelry. And, once again, they both 1) have a LJ and 2) are BPAL fans. They have both Tudor portrait replica jewelry and a belt brooch they've apparently supplied to the Anne Hathaway/Jane Austen biopic, Becoming Jane. I crave the Paradiso Rosa pendant.

[livejournal.com profile] v4v_awards: A new V for Vendetta icon awards community that was kind enough to nominate a couple of my [livejournal.com profile] m15m icons. Do please go over there and nominate some others, as they deserve better than my sad Photoshop skillz, which are limited to "cropping" and "text."

Another icon community: [livejournal.com profile] wd_awards (Walt Disney Awards). It does seem to include Narnia and POTC, as well as all the Disney cartoons and old-school live action movies, and the mod, [livejournal.com profile] squishysquidgy, is good people. Hit the FAQ if you'd like to know more.

More Marie Antoinette pictures. I am now dead from pretty dress.

Zoo bear eats monkey before horrified visitors. Warning: fairly upsetting picture. No gore--but it's the "pulled the monkey, shrieking and resisting, from the fence" portion of the meal, which may make it more disturbing.

[livejournal.com profile] sound_of_bells: "I'm an advanced history student and we're doing independent research projects. I chose to do mine on the effects of 9/11 on America using primarily sort of miniature memoirs from ordinary people about what their experiences were on the day and what its lasting impact has been on them. All the specific information is here." I actually think this sounds like a really cool project, so give it a shot if you feel interested.

Speaking of which: the trailer for Oliver Stone's World Trade Center. I have a bad feeling about this.

You should try your grandmother on the BBC series North and South (not the same as the civil war drama). It's costume drama, repressed longing, and feisty Victorian heroines at its finest. Plus Richard Armitage is approved of by grandmothers the world over.

I've seen icons of that and thought it looked nothing like the Civil War drama and wondered what was up. Looks utterly gorgeous.

It is excellent. Really wonderful and I highly recommend it. I netflixed disc one of the DVD set and then went out and bought it before I had finished watching it.

Take it out! You won't be disappointed! And Mr Thornton may have replaced Darcy in my 'hero who is incredibly hot while angsting and repressing longing' stakes. Why, yes, I am that shallow.

Wow--topping even Colin Firth's ability to be sexy with his eyes alone? That's really saying something. I swear Colin can have the rest of his face immobile and you know exactly what's going on with his eyes. *sighs deeply in lust-like love* :-p

*Points to icon* Meet Mr Thornton, the new hottest man in literature. The mini-series is adapted from the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell of the same name which I highly recommend.

*snicker* I like the Lost-repeat thing.

And I love how we all immediately try to jump on the new Hanso sites every week the minute the ad comes on (I include myself in this)...I just picture Jaybrams sitting there in a studio somewhere like Ashton Kutcher, wearing a trucker hat and a headset and giggling over how he's punk'd the entire world.

that's actually a totally normal naming convention for Barney. a whole lot of songs he's been involved with (post Joy Division) have titles that don't ever figure directly in their respective songs. i can do you a list if you like. XD actually, the last album was a bit weird in that it had more songs than usual that integrated the titles into the lyrics. XD

I won't be seeing the movie, of course, but there.

Totally OT from your post, although I do agree with the Pretty M-A pictures, I just bought your book. Died laughing. My mother was confused as to why I kept randomly uttering phrases from it, mostly as I was in the other room.

So, thanks for a couple hours of amusement. :D

re: the Onion article--*snerk* I was complaining to my friend about a 20 page paper I had to write on Frost's Home Burial and we decided that the only thing worse would be to write a 20 page paper on that three line William Carlos Williams poem about the plums. You'd have to examine it through every school of literary criticism there is and invent a few more to stretch it out. "THE ALIENS! They made him eat the plums! They want to obliterate the human race so they're going to make us eat cold plums until we're dead!"

Also, I hate you for posting a new link of Unaffordable Pretty. But in a good way. ^_^ *extreme wantage*

I saw the trailer for WTC too. Cage's mustache is makes him look silly, imho. I liked his NYPD-look in the other movie... uh, the one where he wins the lottery ticket. (Gah! I can't recall it.) I have a bad feeling about the overall movie, too.

Ooh, which Emma is it? The Gwyneth Paltrow + Jeremy Northam + Ewan McGregor's really bad hair one or the Kate Beckinsale + Some Guy Who Is Much Less Attractive Than Jeremy Northam BBC version?

Date: 2006-05-18 07:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
It's definitely the Paltrow/Northam. You know (having finished watching it now), it's not as good as I remembered. The only element that is, in fact, as good as I remembered is Jeremy Northam. (Good Lord, Ewan's hair is *worse* than I remembered.)

That, and I realized that Mr. Weston was totally Father Christmas in the Narnia movie.

Date: 2006-05-18 09:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sweetle.livejournal.com
I think a perfect version of Emma would have been kind of a mixture of the two. And they tend to get mixed up in my head, so I'm inevitably disappointed by whichever one I watch. (The hair is so bad! Like, did they honestly do that on purpose?)

That, and I realized that Mr. Weston was totally Father Christmas in the Narnia movie.

Kirsten Dunst reminds me of Elle Woods in this (http://outnow.ch/Media/Img/2006/MarieAntoinette/movie.fs/16?w=1400&h=928) picture, because of all the pink.

Also, you might think it's amusing that I've started listening to your launchcast radio station. And liking it. So, you're not alone with the (sometimes) bad taste in music. :)

Basically anything that is owned by Disney is allowed, including movies, tv shows, books and also the theme parks. There is a website that I've seen linked somewhere (and which I can't find now *grump*) that lists everything Disney makes/owns.

Thanks for the promo!

I just so happened to be in Toronto when they were filming World Trade Center, and I wandered onto the set by accident with some of my hockey teammates as they were shooting a downtown manhattan scene! There was paper falling from the sky and extras were racing all over the place. So if you catch a glimpse of a bunch of confused-looking girls wearing bright yellow t-shirts in that movie, one of them is me!
