MSNBC news alert email: Actor Don Knotts, TV's bumbling Deputy Barney Fife, has died at 81.

More on the Dubai ports brouhaha. John Scalzi, somewhat in the vein of what I was saying the other day, with Incompetence in Action: "It has to do with how Bush's people could be so tone-deaf as not to see how this particular deal could be (to use a singularly inappropriate cliche) a political landmine. Didn't anyone in the Executive Branch look up from the Kool-Aid long enough to say 'Hey, haven't we been telling people Arabs are, like, bad? Is it possible handing the ports over to an Arab company might not play well'?" I'm just saying, I'm not the only one it occurred to. And then, from the AP: Homeland Security Objected to Ports Deal.

FBI seeks source of poison at dorm.

Teacher Accused of Sex With Student: "Schweikert, who resigned from her job at E.B. Morse Elementary School on Friday, did not speak during the hearing, and did not have an attorney. The [eleven-year-old] boy's mother tried to tell the judge how shaken her son was, but was choked back by tears. The boy 'wanted his mother to tell the court he was scared,' prosecutor Jerry Peace said. 'He is terrified that the defendant will get out on bond.'"

[livejournal.com profile] lessien_c points out that Sci-Fi's Doctor Who page is already up.

Turns out the Sci-Fiction archive wasn't completely deep-sixed--they won't update it, but they'll keep the archives online, as I discovered when clicking Sci-Fi Wire's link to the newly Nebula-nominated short story, "There's a Hole in the City."

(Hugs for Em. She knows why.)

Don Knotts wasn't supposed to die. He was my Dumbledore.

Seriously. There are some people who just don't die. It's a rule.

I don't believe what happened to Dumbledore actually happened. I believe what happened happened to someone who took a crapload of Polyjuice Potion.

Eleven?! That doesn't sound, at first look, like the kind of thing you usually see where the student was an active and willing participant. And honestly, it takes a sick kind of person to do something like that. I sometimes wonder why teachers who sleep with their students aren't as stigmatized as male pedophiles--it's the same thing, really, but the women always get a lot more sympathy. Just--augh! ELEVEN!!! *shudder*

I know, it's horrible! And the really sad thing is how often there are these reports of a teacher sleeping with a student, usually a female teacher. Last spring, a [male] teacher at my school was arrested for having sex with a [14-year-old] student, and most people's first comments, on hearing about it, were "Oh, gosh, yeah, the same thing happened at my cousin's brother's best-friend's school." As if it were so usual that it didn't matter how many people were being hurt by it.

Poor kid.

Where is this racism that is pouring forth from the Bush administration? All I hear is that Arabic child-exploders are bad.

'Sides, wouldn't the deal with Dubai indicate a level of trust? Oh, not with the Bush administration. Bush is always bad, even if he just gave a baby succesful CPR.

P.S. Heh. Scalzi. He -personally- dislikes me. There was a whole brou-ha-ha.

"Psycho Path"? Puh-LEEZE. These names have got nothing - nothing I say! - on the James Brown Soul Center of the Universe bridge. No, I'm not kidding. I remember the contest to name it, because I was living in Ft. Collins, CO at the time.

I cannot comment on the 11-year-old thing. Too much horror.

RIP Don Knotts.

Fifth graders were never safe from their teachers. We have more efficient news distribution these days, so we hear about it when once we wouldn't have.

So nice to see Bode Miller's priorities are so nicely ordered. I mean, why use incredible talent that many people would kill to have to win a competition that many people would kill to even go to when you can be partying in bars. Forget that higher, faster, stronger bit and pass the lager.

I recently heard about the bad time LJ Crispengray's brother has been having.

Zannechaos posted several links in her journal explaining the situation and I was hoping you could mention in your blog.

The info is here (http://zannechaos.livejournal.com/1393141.html).

Let me know what you think.

So the upshot is that they're trying to get them on Extreme Home Makeover? In terms of charity eforts, I like it--a concrete goal to be met, ample documentation, nothing suspicious about it, no possible fraud. I'll mention it in the next entry, thanks. : )
