The End of the Internet? I linked something similar before, but it's worth reading again. "If Americans are to succeed in designing an equitable digital destiny for themselves, they must mount an intensive opposition similar to the successful challenges to the FCC's media ownership rules in 2003. Without such a public outcry to rein in the GOP's corporate-driven agenda, it is likely that even many of the Democrats who rallied against further consolidation will be 'tamed' by the well-funded lobbying campaigns of the powerful phone and cable industry."

Here's what you can do about it (and if you can, write your own text; it'll mean more).

Kay Nielsen at the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive. I had no idea Nielsen worked on Fantasia! I love his illustrations for The Twelve Dancing Princesses (shown at link), and have even used them as writing inspiration. Someday, I have got to track down the book they're in.

From 5000 different people: Brokeback to the Future.

I have word, from a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a security guy, that [GIANT LOST SPOILER] >> Ana-Lucia will be killed off because Michelle Rodriguez is, to use the jurisprudential term, a giant beeyatch. Also, the drunk driving thing didn't help. And by "will be" I mean "has been filmed." Look at it this way--the Lost group is cuddlier than any cast we've seen since, oh, let's say, Lord of the Rings (wait a minute...), someone who upsets that balance, who can't get along with the group? Is out, no matter how flirty her character gets with Captain Dr. Hero Jack. <<

Dateline's online predator sting. It's hilarious in an awful sort of way--maybe "absurd" is a better way to put it. "The decoy asks him to bring Mike’s Hard Lemonade and 'southbayguy310' says he’ll bring a camera, hoping she’ll let him take naked pictures of her. As he’s driving to our house, he calls the decoy to get directions. He finds the house but just as he’s pulling up, another man being arrested outside. He calls the decoy to find out what’s going on and Del [the decoy] quickly makes up a story saying her neighbor was arrested for dealing drugs. Amazingly, the police activity isn’t enough stop him." And it only gets crazier from there.

In three days, 51 men chatted online with a decoy posing as a 12 or 13-year-old, spoke on the phone, got in some type of vehicle and drove to our house.  And out of the 51, all but one [a friend that one chatter brought] were arrested.

Sgt. Chad Bianco: I did not expect this many suspects arriving at the house.

Michelle Paradise, deputy district attorney: I was surprised at how many actually came in just that period of time.  It was alarming. What is happening down the street?  What is happening around the corner?  What is happening within our county?

Chris Hansen (hidden camera footage): Hey sir, can you come back over here please. And have a seat, you seem to be in a hurry there. Please sit down. Why were you in such a hurry to get in the other side of that fence?
Also, they bring booze, porn, condoms, cameras, and/or sex toys. And when they deny what they came for, Hansen reads their chatlogs back to them. Who shows up? Registered sex offenders (including a convicted rapist and a convicted child molester), a school teacher, an actor, a guy previously in trouble with the law for stalking a woman (and who threatens to "shove that camera down [the reporter's] throat"), and...
Michael Burks:  My father was a police officer. I was a police officer. I work for the Department of Homeland Security.  I understand you guys have a job to do and I’m not trying to tell anything else other than that.  I swear to God, as God as my witness, I’m wearing a St. Michael’s medal right now, okay?  I was not going to do anything with her.
Dude.

(I think "Sir, why are you in such a hurry to get over that fence?" is going to replace "Sir, is this your crack pipe?" as my family's Favorite Crime TV Refrain.)

Dude, the stuff Hansen reads back to these guys from their chatlogs? UGH. At the same time, it's incredibly satisfying to watch them squirm (well, in my mind's eye, anyway) when they're called on their perverted shit.

They've already filmed it? I heard this rumor a while ago, but I thought they would wait a while. You know, to see if she improves. If it already has been filmed, tough, would that mean it's coming this season?

Brownie points for the Kay Nielsen shout-out, I had no idea you liked him (most people have never heard of him). I used to have posters of his art on my walls when I was a teenager; these days I have the original prints from a breaker copy of East of the Sun and West of the Moon (http://www.nocloo.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=54) - I used to work in a rare book shop, and I sort-of accidentally acquired them when I left ... (It's a long story.) I knew he'd worked on Fantasia, but Hollywood wasn't kind to him at all.

Good luck finding Twelve Dancing Princesses - I've got a 1970s reprint of In Powder and Crinoline, and even that's worth a surprising amount of money. Not that I'm parting with it, unless I really have to.

On that page they link to a fairy tales site called Sur la Lune, and I totally raided their image galleries a couple of years back. That's where I discovered him--I wouldn't say I'm a children's lit/art buff or connoisseur or anything, because that implies an overarching knowledge I probably don't have, but I frickin' love picture books and illustration and stuff. I'm still trying to collect Kinuko Craft books (and Trina Schart Hyman, while I'm at it).

I'm not reading the Lost spoiler, because I like to be unsullied like that, but it sure as heck better be a good one. I'm about done with that show, and I was hardcore just a few months ago. This season is one massive snooze.

Date: 2006-02-05 02:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
It's actually nothing to do with the show mythology, like the hatch or whatever--it's more of an outside influences causing changes in the story kind of thing. And I'm pretty sure most people have seen this coming. It's more a confirmation of what we've all suspected would happen, given, in fact, some of the crap we've had this season. I still love the show, but the element in question? Is one I do feel has been a bit subpar.

I think what people don't understand about the cartoon of Muhammad is that Islam is an aniconic society, so therefore, any representation of an aspect of their religion is blasphemous. And they way he was depicted was particularly offensive; not all Muslims are going to bomb someone.

However, people have made cartoons of religious figures before and there hasn't been such an uproar. I think these people really need to lighten up and realize that this sort of thing is pretty much harmless.

Date: 2006-02-05 02:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] snale.livejournal.com
I think the response is more intense than it would normally be because the Muslim world is feeling very much under attack these days. The Mohammed cartoons are basically just salt in the wound.

I am all for convicted rapists and pedophiles being arrested for doing this kind of stuff, but the brother of a friend of mine did get in a whole heap of legal trouble in this same way without committing any crime at all. I mean, I'm not saying they should change what they're doing, because apparently it works, but it does annoy me just a little that innocent people browsing adult chatrooms can get into trouble like this as well.
