This is going to be a short entry mostly composed of linkspam (well... actually, a ton of linkspam) because I still have a lot to do this afternoon, particularly because the Lovely Emily and I are going to see if we're hardcore enough to see two movies in a row tonight. Given that the first one might be Brokeback Mountain (FINALLY at the Rave, damn), we're not entirely sure we can make it.

Also, Sister Girl did just bring me one of the cupcakes with homemade icing that she's making for a friend of hers in the hospital ("I'm not sure exactly, but it involved a safety demonstration and a forklift"). Mmmcake.

Trailer for Flight 93. As in, the downed flight on September 11th. I keep hearing the same reaction over and over to this one: "I'm not ready to see this." And this isn't even taking the Oliver Stone 9/11 firefighter movie into account. Yes, I know it's been exactly five years. But unlike the Holocaust, 9/11 is not something that people are denying happened or are (allegedly) in danger of forgetting. Hell, most of us watched it happen on TV. And the thing is, with two 9/11 movies, we are going to be bombarded with two doses of trailers, commercials, talk-show circuits, and general press hysteria. Even if you don't want to see the movie(s), you won't be able to escape. Sigh.

My brother and I were going to see Goblet of Fire and Rent on the same day back in November. But then the film melted seven minutes into Rent, and we never got to see it >_<

It melted? How exactly does that happen?

Sometimes, the strip of film will snag in the gate of the projector. If the film remains pressed against the hot lightbulb for more than a few seconds, the lightbulb will melt a hole through those frames of the film. After that, the bulb is ruined and film is unplayable, unless you have a splicer sitting around.

This happened to me when I went to see a revival of the Vincent Price House of Wax. :[

The film melted when I saw Goblet of Fire! It was so surreal because it had never happened to me before, I'd only seen spoofs that made the film "melt". It was funny because it was at the part where Rita Skeeter was going into the broom closet with Harry, and people were like "is this part of the movie?". Luckily, they had another reel and played it from a minute or two before it melted on the other reel.

Rent was awesome, I saw it in the beginning of December. The amusing thing was this: When my friend and I got there, there was a middle-aged couple sitting in the theater, and that's it. So of course we get awesome seats. The previews started, and get this, the couple LEFT after the Brokeback Mountain preview, I guess it offended them a lot or whatever. So my friend and I basically got a private screening of Rent. It was great.

I know what you mean. In 2004, I made the mistake of trying to break up with my boyfriend on September 11th. He started going "OMG! I can't believe you're doing this to me today!" And honestly, it hadn't even occured to me that he might care or expect me to.

Yeah, it's like that country song, "Proud to be an American"? They played that thing so much in 2001 and 2002 I don't think I will ever be able to hear it again without screaming.

Okay, but this is totally random--my main account is jmorrow. Which predates "Cleolinda" as a username, was a one-time thing, and has absolutely nothing to do with my real name, even. I can't even remember WHY I chose it now--maybe it was a character in a story I was writing? But I don't even remember a Morrow in anything I wrote. So... uh... totally random. cleolinda78 is my Cleolinda account, but... it doesn't have a lot of money in it. Woe.

And I've just gone through the linkspam. I'd just like to add my two cents:

Of course Bono is right. Does Theroux realize how stupid he's making himself seem? Seriously, there's a reason why sign language for 'stupid' is to tap your forehead with your fist... rocks for brains.

I'm probably biased because I'm totally Bono-obsessed, but unlike Theroux, when Bono opens his mouth (as he so often does) and starts talking about Africa, he actually knows what he's talking about. As Bono puts it, the reason he won't shut up about Africa, is not only because he cares (and he does) but because he can.
Bono has a permanent place in the spotlight, and he's taken advantage of it. Not for his own ends, but to use his voice (which happens to be very loud) to speak for those that can't speak for themselves.

One of the things the ONE organization (and Bono) stresses is that it's not just about feeding money into Africa. It's about getting in there, getting your hands dirty, and fixing things. It's about getting these nations back on their feet so that they no longer have to rely on outside money. A big part of that is in putting a stop to the government corruption.

Just because I feel like sharing, the last time I saw two first-run movies in the same day they were Legally Blonde 2 and Enemy At The Gates. That was a weird afternoon, to say the least.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Whoa. Dude. I don't know that I've even done it, myself--I feel like I have, but I can't remember what two movies I saw, if so.

That might actually have been the only time I've done that with first-run movies - besides Serenity's opening day, when we saw it at 1:30 and 7:15. Hee. I've done it at the revival theatre in Minneapolis a lot, though - double and triple features and stuff.

But yes, that was a weird combination. Especially since we saw Enemy at the Gates FIRST and then had to haul ass to get to Legally Blonde and...weird. Weird is the only word for it.

Not really planning on seeing Brokeback Mountain, but... dude, that ad is great.

And as something of a feminist (and anti-smoking fanatic), I fully support the raping of the Marlboro Man image. =P

But I did think the hate article had one good point... I don't care which way you swing, because that's your business. But don't expect me to hate you less for cheating with someone of your own sex. Cheaters suck, hetero or homo. I would much rather see a touching, angst-ridden drama about gay cowboys who don't have marriages to ruin.

I'm not even American and I'm not ready to see a film about 9/11. I doubt I ever will be. Not coz it scarred me personally, but just...no. It's not a day I care to remember. I was on the other side of the world and we were still crowded round our TVs freaking out about what was happening.

I'm so stoked about those Narnia DVDs coming out. When I return to Burma in a few weeks I'll be able to pick up the DVD in the market there but I doubt any 2-disc editions will be available so far from the release date. Maybe in another month or two. I'll let you know.

Cool site (http://www.myheritage.com/FP/Company/face_recognition.php?s=1&u=g0&lang=EN). You upload a picture of yourself, or anyone, into the program and it scans the face and tells you what celebrities you look like. You have to sign up, but there's no verification e-mail or anything, so you can technically put in a false e-mail address if you are worried about spam. It's surprisingly entertaining. :-)
