I have had a few complaints indirect requests for lj-cuts, and since we're beyond the first few crucial days where I could argue that you could suck it up because this was important, I will comply. At this point, you're either interested or you're not.


First off, the FEMA saga as it played out over my collection of links:

lederhosen: "Washington Post article here gives another explanation for why the federal response was so badly delayed: Washington was trying to blackmail Blanco into giving them full authority over the evacuation. Commenters elsewhere have noted that this would've given Shrubco the power to award contracts for the rebuilding in NOLA afterwards. They weren't waiting on a request for assistance, they were waiting on authority to take over, which Blanco didn't trust them with."

FEMA head bears brunt of Katrina anger.

Dems Assail White House on Katrina Effort:

At a news conference, Pelosi, D-Calif., said Bush's choice for head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency had "absolutely no credentials." She related that she urged Bush at the White House on Tuesday to fire Brown.

"He said 'Why would I do that?'" Pelosi said.

"'I said because of all that went wrong, of all that didn't go right last week.' And he said 'What didn't go right?'"

"Oblivious, in denial, dangerous," she added.

Tabby: "There was a story on NPR's Morning Edition this morning about how the Coast Guard got themselves to New Orleans right away and saved lots of people. You can hear the story here. There was a Massachusetts group that sent a chopper down the coast so that it was right behind Katrina when it made landfall on the Gulf Coast. The motto of the Coast Guard is "Semper Paratus" (Always Prepared). To bad FEMA and Homeland Security can't make the same claim. ETA: Mike Brown, the inept FEMA chief, has been canned. At least, he's been taken off Katrina relief, if not fired completely."

Michael Brown ("Brownie") has been removed as head of FEMA but "doesn't know why."

I linked to this yesterday (?) on someone else's recommendation but didn't really read it (I can't read everything, you know--sometimes I skim the first paragraph just to verify what it's about. It's how I stay sane). But... yeah. Read this. And send the article to everyone you know.

We decided we had to save ourselves. So we pooled our money and came up with $25,000 to have ten buses come and take us out of the City. Those who did not have the requisite $45.00 for a ticket were subsidized by those who did have extra money. We waited for 48 hours for the buses, spending the last 12 hours standing outside, sharing the limited water, food, and clothes we had. We created a priority boarding area for the sick, elderly and new born babies. We waited late into the night for the "imminent" arrival of the buses. The buses never arrived. We later learned that the minute the arrived to the City limits, they were commandeered by the military.

As we approached the bridge, armed Gretna sheriffs formed a line across the foot of the bridge. Before we were close enough to speak, they began firing their weapons over our heads. This sent the crowd fleeing in various directions. As the crowd scattered and dissipated, a few of us inched forward and managed to engage some of the sheriffs in conversation. We told them of our conversation with the police commander and of the commander's assurances. The sheriffs informed us there were no buses waiting. The commander had lied to us to get us to move.

We questioned why we couldn't cross the bridge anyway, especially as there was little traffic on the 6-lane highway. They responded that the West Bank was not going to become New Orleans and there would be no Superdomes in their City. These were code words for if you are poor and black, you are not crossing the Mississippi River and you were not getting out of New Orleans.

All day long, we saw other families, individuals and groups make the same trip up the incline in an attempt to cross the bridge, only to be turned away. Some chased away with gunfire, others simply told no, others to be verbally berated and humiliated. Thousands of New Orleaners were prevented and prohibited from self-evacuating the City on foot. Meanwhile, the only two City shelters sank further into squalor and disrepair. The only way across the bridge was by vehicle. We saw workers stealing trucks, buses, moving vans, semi-trucks and any car that could be hotwired. All were packed with people trying to escape the misery New Orleans had become.

Unfortunately, our sinking feeling (along with the sinking City) was correct. Just as dusk set in, a Gretna Sheriff showed up, jumped out of his patrol vehicle, aimed his gun at our faces, screaming, "Get off the fucking freeway". A helicopter arrived and used the wind from its blades to blow away our flimsy structures. As we retreated, the sheriff loaded up his truck with our food and water.

And then, if you can imagine, it gets worse.

This is what he was hired to do. This is why he is in office. Hell, the day after Katrina, Bush flew right by Louisiana and headed straight to San Diego to party with his Greatest Generation cronies. Reassure the masters, first and foremost, eh Shrub? Understood.

"That's right, Mr. President just suspended minimum wage to protect the interest of the insurance companies. Wow. That was quick. What a guy."

My mom was telling a story at dinner that's a bit more upbeat.

She works for a bank here in town (New Braunfels, TX) and she said they have a refugee family with accounts there now. Apparently they got out of NOLA the day before the storm hit, and it's a family of twenty-five- cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, several kids, the works.

Anyway, they got out of town and came here somehow, apparently met up with a guy who builds houses who moved them into 4 or 5 houses that he built that were empty, all right next door to each other.

And then he sent them to Mom's bank and like, one man worked for New Orleans fire department and can't get to any of his money, another used to bank with the First National Bank of New Orleans, which is of course gone now, so my mom set them up accounts without any sevice charge, got them free checks, changed the initial deposit from $100 to $1 per account, etc.

New Braunfels being what it is, I wouldn't be surprised if they stay here, since their stuff is gone, their homes are gone, and their family is all here.

This has NO RELATION to my priorities, really, but I am strangely and deeply comforted by the story about Snowball the dog possibly having been found.

That was the story that managed to make me burst into tears at work a couple days ago, because I was stupid enough to read the news article about animals affected by Katrina on the computer at the front of the store.

Michael Brown ("Brownie") has been removed as head of FEMA but "doesn't know why."

Actually, that link doesn't say that Brown's being removed as head of FEMA - AFAIK, he hasn't (yet). Rather, he's been relieved of command for FEMA's Katrina-related work. On paper, he's still running FEMA, just not this particular operation.

Politically, his career is dead dead dead, and I suspect they're working on 'persuading' him to resign to save the embarrassment of having to fire him. My guess would be that Bush is going to throw him to the wolves and hope that appeases the angry masses.

And a shamless pimp of my own tiny thing I'm doing (if not cool please delete)- for anyone in the Boston area (Newton, to be exact) - I'm putting together a hurricane relief concert. Classical type music (not what I listen to, but the only thing I can sing well). Haven't fixed program yet but will shortly - it will be October 1st at 8 PM at Our Lady's - Newton Community Chorus (that's me), Newton Symphony Orchestra, a few other groups I'm trying to nail down now. Hopefully more details to hit local news media soon.

the story you posted was just terrible, terrible. i know playing the 'blame game' isn't exactly productive, but i makes me want to see bush receive at least some of the blame. on a diff note, the relief efforts everywhere have been impressive- even in my little wisconsin city, there's been several relief efforts going on on many levels. someone donated an anonomous $10,000 last week just in my town. now its up to the different relief organizations and the government to actually get organized and help out! i don't know if this would interest you, but a local organization (http://www.nechama.org) i'm a part of is sending a deployment of volunteers and supplies down south. (i can't go with, but i sent word out to my congregation and now a friend of mine is)
