Quick question: Does anyone know what font they use for the Lost logo?

Reader submissions

I cannot substantiate the [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt story about Britney wanting to televise her birth for charity. I would, however, chip in to pay her not to televise it.

I steal from [livejournal.com profile] aralinde like a stealing thing:

"On cam, way down the street, you can see what appears to be an armed military foot patrol. First one I've seen."

"...Wolf Blitzer on CNN saying that the Katrina victims "are so poor, and they are so black..." Here is a screenshot of that CNN story with closed-caption text displayed along with the audio of Wolf saying that."

"A confidential source reports that the Mayor of New Orleans and Oprah Winfrey will be sharing a helocopter flight over the city today. Also, he tells me that the NAACP is asking for permission to fly over the city to evaluate."

Civil-rights leader claims cannibalism. "Without providing evidence, a civil-rights leader and author claimed black victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans have resorted to cannibalism to survive because no one has come to help them."

What Happened to a Race Deferred. "What a shocked world saw exposed in New Orleans last week wasn't just a broken levee. It was a cleavage of race and class, at once familiar and startlingly new, laid bare in a setting where they suddenly amounted to matters of life and death."

The Rebellion of the Talking Heads: Newscasters, sick of official lies and stonewalling, finally start snarling.

Two Christian leaders in New Orleans are testifying to God's mercy in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. One suggests that the death toll could have been much higher had it not been for God's mercy -- and the other that God may have used the hurricane to purge wickedness from the city. New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now," Shanks says. "God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again."

A visibly angry Mayor Daley said the city had offered emergency, medical and technical help to the federal government as early as Sunday to assist people in the areas stricken by Hurricane Katrina, but as of Friday, the only things the feds said they wanted was a single tank truck. "Daley said the city offered 36 members of the firefighters' technical rescue teams, eight emergency medical technicians, search-and-rescue equipment, more than 100 police officers as well as police vehicles and two boats, 29 clinical and 117 non-clinical health workers, a mobile clinic and eight trained personnel, 140 Streets and Sanitation workers and 29 trucks, plus other supplies. City personnel are willing to operate self-sufficiently and would not depend on local authorities for food, water, shelter and other supplies, he said."

British survivors of Hurricane Katrina start arriving home as fears grow for those still unaccounted for.

Red Cross Discourages Opening Your Home to Evacuees. As [livejournal.com profile] roseredhoofbeat points out, "OK, I officially HATE the Red Cross right now. Has anyone told them that this is TEXAS? We all have GUNS for crying out loud! If someone tried to make off with the good silver, we can legally shoot them, because THIS IS TEXAS!"

[livejournal.com profile] promise19: "Here's a link to a NYT article that confirms the reports that have been floating around about the NOLA police department. Law Officers, Overwhelmed, Are Quitting the Force: 'Reeling from the chaos of an overwhelmed city, at least 200 New Orleans police officers have walked away from their jobs and two have committed suicide.' " [Use bugmenot.com to bust past the required registration.]

Gwynevere1: "Just wanted to suggest a link. JustHuman has a really good post on empathy, that I think would be helpful to those who have been reading your journal for days now."

[livejournal.com profile] supersyncspaz7: "Here's something: in Arlington, TX (near my part of the world), the salon I get my hair done at is offering free hair treatments for evacuees around the nineteenth. I can't remember the name of the salon (the stylist who does my hair just moved over there and I've only been by once), but once I do, I'll be sure to mention it. Also, they're collecting school supplies for the kids too."

(My note: I think there's a salon here in Trussville (AL) doing something very similar.)

[livejournal.com profile] sorchar: "We're getting a thousand refugees here in Portland, but I'm still trying to find out what we can do to help."

Speaking of which, [livejournal.com profile] piratesorka: "I just heard that the Oregon National Guard are coming back with about 300 or so NO folks and put them up in a Portland area high school that was recently closed. I'm packing up some of my plus size clothes and making a donation."

In that vein, [livejournal.com profile] ankhet: "If you're still collecting links, I'd suggest taking a look at this post about plus-sized clothing desperately being needed."

Note: I'm hearing that the Red Cross does not accept used clothing. You'll have to take it to another charity, I think.

From Cheetara, an actual refugee currently in Atlanta: "For those of you looking for an alternative to the national news, www.wwltv.com, a local news station, is very good."

A link from... uh, me: Giving Works at eBay, where you can sell or bid on items for charity.

[livejournal.com profile] captainsblog: "For the next round of linkspam: http://cdbaby.com, a much-loved indy music site, has arranged with the artists on hundreds of CDs in its catalog to donate all profits from sales of the selected albums to the Red Cross. I've had trouble searching for specific groups, but hey. Pick a genre and browse. You'll fall in love with a deserving artist who you've never heard of before and get a legal disc out of the deal for a donation that will matter."

[livejournal.com profile] jennnk: Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski opens the state to 1000 Katrina refugees. "In the days since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Oregonians from every corner of the state have reached out wanting to help," Kulongoski said in a statement. "Our offer has been accepted and now its our time to pull together to help those victims who lost their homes and their communities find some solace so they can regain their strength and begin healing from the tragedy that they--and our nation--have endured."

elkins on JournalFen: "Might I also suggest... Sisyphus Shrugged's Lake George Link List? She links to the blackfolks timeline as well, and also to a number of other very good informative articles, a few outright rants), and at the end, to a number of organizations who are accepting donations or suggesting unconventional ways to help."

[livejournal.com profile] ladykatiewench: "I would like to recommend another place for people to send donations and have the money go directly to the people who need it the most. There is a group called Desire Street Ministries. Yes, it is religious but rather than just preaching, they also help alot of people around the south and especially in New Orleans. They have been doing this for some time and many of the people they help were in the worst place to be hit by flooding, Ninth Ward. Ninth Ward is the poorest section of the poor part of New Orleans. One of the levees that broke was right next to Ninth Ward. When you hear about bodies floating in the streets, that is where they are talking about.

Right now, Desire Street is trying to help evacuate the people of Ninth Ward and find them places to stay. They have found some places for people to stay in Texas and Georgia, but it isn't cheap to give them food, clothes, a place to stay, and transportation out of New Orleans. Therefore, they are taking donations. This money will not be handed down through channels, it will go directly to the people who need it.

If you want to send a check, make it payable to Desire Street Ministries to

Whitney National Bank
Mail Teller
1716 Mangum Road
Houston, TX 77092

The other way is to donate electronically through www.networkforgood.org -- enter the keyword as "Desire Street Ministries" and the state as Louisiana. Keep in mind, though, that this web site charges a 3% fee. So, mailing a check is best, especially if you plan to make a substantial donation.

If you are interested in checking out the website for the group, it is http://www.desirestreet.org/

If you would be willing to pass this information along, I would greatly appreciate it. I do know people who work with this group and they are doing good things."

[livejournal.com profile] gryphonmage: "Cleo, I don't how true this is nationwide, but my local Smith's (in New Mexico) grocery store is allowing you to include a donation to the Red Cross on your grocery bill. Smith's is part of Kroger, and according to the Smith's website all the stores in the Kroger chain will be doing this, so for people who want to donate, but like me, don't have a local Red Cross office or have one that seems like it is always closed, or just don't want to use the website, they might want to check out this option."

(My note: I can add that the Publix chain down here is doing the same thing.)

[livejournal.com profile] pride4u2: "Hey, Cleo...I don't mean to jeopardize your sanity even further (or anyone else's for that matter), but everyone needs to see this."

[livejournal.com profile] angelic_oni: "Just wanted to let you know that Maddox, the creator of the Best Page in the Universe (http://maddox.xmission.com/), has updated his site and for the next few days (until Wednesday) 50% of the profit made at his store (http://store.theworstpageintheuniverse.com/) will go to the Red Cross. A lot of people know about and love his site and yours, for that matter, so maybe you can pass this on. Every little bit helps, I figure."

[livejournal.com profile] bellatrys: "I found this editorial in the Biloxi paper which is also still reporting although they don't know where 9 of their people are yet, and it says much the same thing, but I think everyone shoudl read it because it's about survivors' guilt and practical, simple things to do - it's *good* you're a survivor, that you were less hurt than your neighbors, because now you will be able to help them, is the message. I needed to hear that, I know."

I just did a quick google for the Lost logo - and can't find it!? The tv-credits one, anyway, although it is probably something like Futura or Avante Garde in a light weight.

I think the one on the front of the DVD cover is Helvetica Condensed Black. I'm 95% certain, I work with all forms of Helvetica 7.5 hours a day every day.

I think, maybe... wow, I'm so helpful. :/

And why are there two different kinds of logotypes? BAD BRANDING PEOPLE, no donut.

I just looked at the Lost logo, and while violet_things seems to have a much better idea of fonts than I do, to the untrained eye, it looks like just plain Arial. I think your Arial Black would do fine.

ARRG I am sorry. I have all of them but of course they are for Mac.

Do you have... hmm... is it Century Gothic? That might be close to the light, open face that's used on the credits.

As a professional type-snob, I can't condone substituting Arial for Helvetica. But I know you are doing this for charity type stuff and will not call it out if you end up using it. ;)

Isn't there an Arial Narrow or something like that? Or does that not come in black/heavy? I'm not all up on my Microsoft fontage.

Another one to look for would be Univers. If you have that in a condensed black, that could work too. If you are still looking for these on Tues., send me an email and I'll snag them off the Win machine at work.

I think you'd have Helvetica if you had a Mac. I've been looking for a free one for ages, and never found anyhting else but the commercial one (and I find it expensive for my pocket...) Interesting link (http://www.ms-studio.com/articlesarialsid.html) about differences between Arial and Helvetica.

Dallas is certainly getting the job done. My family and I went to the Convention Center yesterday and the Red Cross lady said that they needed no more volunteers. When we tried to donate our stuff however, we got so many mixed messages that we just went home and donated it all to the Salvation Army.

They really need baby clothes, diapers, underwear, and socks so if anyone wants to buy anything, I'd suggest that.

Oh, and make sure you know where to go when you start off so you're not led on a giant goose-hunt.

The impeachment links made me laugh. A president can only be impeached for high crimes. LOL. That's why Clinton was never going to be impeached. It wasn't really perjury. Also it was mainly Republicans trying to get rid of a guy they didn't like. Just like this is just being used by Democrats in an attempt to get rid of Bush. He hasn't comitted any impeachable offence. Amusing nonetheless though.

It's not like in California. We can recall our governors if we want to. And we did. That's how we got the governator. We got enough people to sign a petition to get rid of Grey Davis and then we voted and recalled him and elected the Governator. Doesn't work like that in federal government though.

Yeah, but impeachment is a very political game. If the Pres is unpopular enough with Congress, he can potentially be impeached on grounds that have little to do with the real reasons why they want to barbecue him. If his screwups with Katrina hurt him badly enough, I could see Congress suddenly deciding that the Downing Street memo was worthy of impeachment after all.

Putting this here since so many people will be able to see it. And since you have done such an amazing job informing the masses on this whole thing. (Thank you for that, Cleo.)

There has been (as of Friday noon at least) no official policy released by the Federal government regarding Food Stamps for the survivors. They may be leaving it up to the individual counties to decide. Here in Fresno, California we have a temporary "emergency" policy in place. (Which came about on Friday when we got 7 survivors showing up.) We are giving Food Stamps without the usual work requirements. And we are accepting "declaration of fact" statements in lieu of identification if the survivors have lost their IDs. Predictably, people will take advantage of this. But, that will not deter us from keeping this policy going until someone gives an official policy. So, I urge those survivors who have managed to get out of the area to apply for Emergency Food Stamps (can be issued the same day) wherever they end up. The policies will no doubt vary from county to county, but this is a viable option. And this is one of the things Food Stamps were created for in the first place. In some instances people may also be able to apply for cash aid as well. There is a huge problem with Assistance programs, and that is not going to change anytime soon. But, it's nice once in awhile to be able to do the right thing and provide the much needed assistance appropriately. (And I say this as a government worker in the Homeless Food Stamp program who sees all too regularly the people most in need disqualified for ridiculous reasons.)

And I have to say that having lived in England and been treated as well as the citizens there in an emergency, that I am appalled that we were asking for citizenship verification during evacuation. That's just abominable.

What killed me was the constant searches people went through while trying to be evacuated or get to safety. I mean, I understand to an extent that they don't want weapons in the Superdome, where people are going to get testy. But honestly? There are times where you have to make a judgment call and skip regulations for the greater good.

I got the weird feeling that they were afraid that someone was going to strike a blow for terrorism or something. Which I find hilarious, in a dark way--what's someone going to do, blow up a block of a city that's already a smear on the map? Al Qaeda sources are already having a fine high time claiming this is our "punishment"; all they really have to do is sit back, relax, and let us kill each other, at this point.

There are times where you have to make a judgment call and skip regulations for the greater good.

Why can't the people in charge understand this?

I got the weird feeling that they were afraid that someone was going to strike a blow for terrorism or something.

Possibly because Homeland Security has their feet firmly in the midst of all this? And by ensuring that we were safe from terrorism they let anarchy run amok and finally decided to go with martial law. It's ridiculous the way this entire thing has been handled. And what I don't understand is why the response has been so different from the response to 9/11. At the end of the day they are both horrific tragedies with a hell of a lot of aid needed. If the country could mobilize so much more effectively for that, why not now? You would think they would have made improvements in response time and ability since then instead of backsliding. Sigh.

On a somewhat unrelated note, thank you again for everything you've been doing. Including the CafePress stuff. I've donated already, but I'll be buying some stuff when it comes available. It really is so refreshing to see someone with your kind of influence and viewership using that power for good. You should be commended.

I have to agree with the Red Cross, just from the POV of evacuee safety. I could see predators having a field day with the situation..."Sure, I'll take in the nicely traumatized family with the 12-year-old".

Also, there will be a lot of existing or pre-emerging medical issues. The host families would need to undergo training.

I'm prejudiced against crazy Christian fundies. They scare me.

As far as the Red Cross discouraging people from taking in refugees...I hate to say this, but after hearing about the awful things that happened there, I wouldn't open my home. Well, I might, if I could specify females or children only. But men? Hell no. My luck I'd get one of those sick fuck rapists. The one thing this whole mess has taught me is not to trust another soul. People are terrifying.

Well, yeah, okay. But my point is.... this is San Antonio, Texas. We are the headquarters of Take No Shit. I learned how to shoot a shotgun when I was eight for crying out loud. Crazy Rapist Man wants to take advantage of MY hospitality, I'll blow his head off. Honestly? I hate to further the sterotype, but I don't even KNOW anyone that doesn't have a gun in the house, know how to use it, and at the very least could use it to bludgeon someone to death.

I don't see any reason why people offering space couldn't go to some Red Cross site and meet people, and we could get everyone screened and stuff. I mean, c'mon dammit.

Good point about the predators being the housers, though. Still. To call the whole thing off is just stupid.

Ah. Well, I'm from Utah, and it's very rare to see any kind of violence here. (I'm sure it happens, they just don't report it much). So we're not much for toting guns (though I can see the need for one). So I was just commenting more on the general statement that Red Cross made, rather than a direct reply to what you posted. I do understand your point though.

There is transportation provided, with people ready and waiting, for upwards of 200 dogs and 150 cats so far rescued from the devastation of hurricane Katrina. What these animals need is a place to go. Kennels, boarding, vets offices, shelters with any extra space, foster homes and rescues. Even one or two open kennels would greatly help.

From what we know, all animals have been vaccinated and are in good health considering the conditions. There are dogs and cats of every breed and size. Some are in groups of two, three or four, hailing from the same family, while some are solitary. ANY KENNEL SPACE AVAILABLE CAN CERTAINLY BE USED. These drivers are willing to move these animals ANYWHERE they need to go. Absolutely anywhere.

The current safe houses for these animals are being inundated and some of these pets will have to be euthanized if they are not moved to make room for the incoming animals.

Please feel free to pass on this information everywhere. Every forum, every list, every community.

REMEMBER THESE ANIMALS WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO YOU.

If you know anyone, anywhere, that is willing to take in even one cat or dog, please have them contact Lynda at the information provided below.

They are also asking for ANY kind of donations for the animals - money, food, bedding, water, etc.

I don't know what font they use for the LOST logo, but I swear in the French version it's, like, comic sans or something. Seriously, it's maybe the original font and 'Perdus' doesn't suit it or it's just not an ominous looking word or they actually used a different font , but the French logo is the most non-scary thing ever. That was competely unhelpful, I know, but it's something I've been meaning to get off my chest for awhile. :-)

sorchar: "We're getting a thousand refugees here in Portland, but I'm still trying to find out what we can do to help."
Speaking of which, piratesorka: "I just heard that the Oregon National Guard are coming back with about 300 or so NO folks and put them up in a Portland area high school that was recently closed. I'm packing up some of my plus size clothes and making a donation."

I love what you're doing here, and I love my state! This is the least of what I expect from Oregonians. My spare room isn't livable right now, but my landlord is all ready to double up his teenage daughters to put up a family, if necessary, and all my friends with extra rooms are all, "come on over!" *love love love*

I don't know that we're so different from Texans. We all have guns here too, but if some poor person we've opened our homes to tried to make off with the silver, I'd like to think that most of us would use less than deadly force. After a disaster of this magnitude, most of us should realize our stuff is only stuff, and the health and well-being of these people are the first priority.
