Bad news: Halliburton gets a NOLA cleanup contract.

Good news: Pandacam--keeping you sane one pandasnuggle at a time.

CafePress news: I've whipped up some samples. These are just examples, in low res--once I've decided on the design, it's no big thing to make an image in different template formats (mug, sticker, button, mouse pad, shirt). The actual design images are way huge, so these are just sort of thumbnails. If people like multiple designs, I have no problem putting up more than one per quote.

"Werewolves" (HP&POA/15M, sticker template)

"Hey Baby" (King Arthur/15M, sticker template, styles 1 & 2. Style 1 looks better at larger sizes, say, on a shirt.)

"Porno" (HP&POA/15M, sticker template, styles 1 & 2)

"Porno" (HP&POA/15M, round button template, styles 3 & 4)

"Woe" (General use, sticker template. Would look good at larger size on shirt or mousepad.)

Also, I have the Hard Rock Cafe font if someone could do a Black Rock Cafe parody logo, à la Lost.

[Poll #563996]

ETA: Might want to look into what the Red Cross did with 9/11 funds. I put them on the list anyway because they're the biggest and most organized, but...

What about Habitat for Humanity? :P there's a good place :$ Just a suggestion. You don't have to include it in a poll, but could you remind people of it? Cause I'm sure I *think* they're gonna be helping rebuild New Orleans, since they do provide homes for people and all.

Yeah, I know the feeling. Somehow I'm in a total state of emotional disconnect at the moment, which is probably for the best. Again: not watching it all on TV helps a lot.

I live in San Antonio, Texas, and pretty soon we're going to be getting evacuees. I just called the United Way, and she told me that I need to register with a volunteer agency, not just show up because they'll turn me away. After what happened at the Superdome, they're understandably kinda paranoid.
I signed up with them, at http://www.unitedwaysatx.org/katrina/volunteer_add.cfm

It will take 3-5 days for them to get back with you, but we don't have a pressing need for them YET. Evacuees will be coming soon, though and they NEED HELP!

Call the United Way hotline at 211 if you have any questions- the lady I talked to was very helpful and nice. If anyone needs a place to stay, I will try to either put you up at my place, or find someone who can. No guarantees- it depends on how many people need it and can't find it. My house only has one bathroom, and I'd rather not go in for a mini-Superdome situation.

If you could please post this, I would be most grateful. Thank you.

I'm totally disturbed but that link to the Red Cross article. I clicked on another link within the article and saw that every organization collected millions of dollars and dispursed next to nothing. It's like knowing that if you donate $20, only 2 of it will go to help people.

I voted for the Humane Society because I suspect that overall they'll get fewer donations than the "people" charities. I donated to them too. The stories of people having to leave pets behind really tore me up. To lose your friends, after losing so much...

I kinda wish I hadn't read that about the Red Cross, because I've already donated to them. Oh well, better there than in my bank account, even if they do mismanage to some extent.

I can't honestly say that I disagree with people donating to people-centric charities, rather than animal-centric ones. I love animals, I love pets, and it does break my heart to see people having to leave their dogs and cats behind. But given the choice between helping an animal and helping a human being, I've got to go with helping the human being.

NO national guards, NO military personnel, Nothing at all." That's why I'm putting all my donations toward them at the moment.

Bad news: Halliburton ...etc

Well, Cleo, I'm here in Houston, where Halliburton getting contracts means more jobs, not only in New Orleans, but here in a city with tens of thousands of new residents this week.

I don't think this is a political comment, as economics are far more complicated.

The evacuees may not fall into the Houston workforce in the immediate future, but Houston residents will wind up being taxed (or paid less, if property taxes increase to cover expanding State and city expenses) to pay for the extraordinary measures in this emergency. And everybody donating money to charities? Needs to stay employed in order to donate.

I specialized in reporting property tax and independent contractor tax, so I know how it works in no-State-income-tax states like Texas. If this state took in 154,000 evacuees this week (plus the people who arrived before the hurricane hit), then there needs to be income to pay for their needs.

Other than that, I make the "get back, Vampire" sign whenever I pass Halliburton on my way to IAH. I blow raspberries at Baker-Hughs when I shop at Central Market. (I, erm, don't think that's political, either, since you labeled this news "bad news" in the original post.)

Hmm, good point. I guess I assumed that cronyism would be more the order of the day--but Houston is exactly the place that needs more jobs at the moment, like you said.

(As for political comments, I'm more worried about tone than content--snotty/aggressive tones were the problem with the threads I had to freeze. Intelligent discussion is absolutely fine.)

Re: Red Cross
I think making a donation DIRECTLY to your LOCAL Red Cross chapter is a better way to go, particularly in areas where refugees are being sent. I hate to keep bringing up the West Alabama chapter, but I KNOW...I've WATCHED...the donations be used the way they should be. (Literally, people donate cash, and an hour later it's used to buy paper plates for the shelters.)

The world has gone nuts.

When donating to the Red Cross, remember that it is an international organisation. They're very good at what they do, but your money will not be earmarked for the victims of Katrina. It may just as well end up in a refugee camp in, for example, north-western Africa. No matter where your money ends up, it's going to do a lot of good.

Oh the Red Cross website, I tried (unsuccessfully) to donate last night. There is a place for you to tell select the area you want your donation to go to-- but it was generic-- like 2005 Hurricane Relief. I'm thinking the local Red Cross contribution would be the best way for me to go (providential how that webform didn't work last night, now that I think about it). We're getting thousands of displaced people here, so I know they will be able to use the funds. Plus, I'm going to find a way to do some other things since we have outlets where we can take things that are going directly to displaced people. One opportunity is to donate school supplies and uniforms (yes, our public schools have uniforms here) for evacuee children entering school here.
