Jun. 18th, 2005 09:27 pmUpdate from the homefront: The Lovely Emily and I have just gotten back from Batman Begins (two thumbs up, but don't take the kids), after which we reserved our copies of Harry Potter at the big Barnes & Noble (midnight party, yay!) and roamed the shelves for a while, and now we're back at Casa Cleo ordering a pizza. Whee!

Date: 2005-06-19 02:37 am (UTC)Seriously, am I the only HP fan in this universe who has never been to a release party? It really feels like that some days.
I'm glad that you think Batman Begins is good, because my friend is dragging me to see it. I was considering bringing a book and a flashlight, being uninterested in comic book movies. But if it's good, maybe I'll just sneak in a walkman.

Date: 2005-06-19 04:50 am (UTC)(Kids + movies = sometimes ok) I had a "hot date" with an 11 year old boy whom I've known since he was wee... Took him to see his first Star Wars movie in the theater... and there was a little boy behind me sitting on his dad's lap, and at the 'scary' parts, he would occasionally kick my seat- I couldn't be mad because I remember being that little and watching The Empire Strikes Back from underneath a couch cushion. =)

Date: 2005-06-19 07:50 pm (UTC)My grandmother and I saw BB last night. We both enjoyed it, but she liked it more. Turns out that she was teh comix überfan when she was a kid (this would be in the 1930s and 40s), so having read all the original Batman comics, she was thrilled. I liked the small touches— Alfred wearing his formals in the future Bat-Cave, the little subplot with the kid ("the other kids don't believe me"), Lt. Gordon's reaction to jet-mode on the Batmobile. The Scarecrow freaked me out, even without his mask. He seriously reminded me of the dentist in Little Shop of Horrors. I wanted him to off himself with his own weaponized hallucinogen.

Date: 2005-06-20 03:25 pm (UTC)Hee! I just loved Gary Oldman, period. It's so sad when "nice, normal guy" is casting against type. And he was so good in that first scene with young Bruce--just the right blend of awkward and comforting, I thought.
I liked Michael Caine a lot too, and that surprised me, because I loved the Alfred from the other movies, and was almost miffed they didn't port him over to this one. I mean, I see how why they wouldn't have--too elderly and frail, for one thing--but it was a serious concern at first. Really, the entire supporting cast was top-dollar--I mean, Rutger Hauer in what was essentially a throwaway role? Linus Roache for an extended cameo as the father? Morgan Freeman? So much class, the whole enterprise.
