Update from the homefront: The Lovely Emily and I have just gotten back from Batman Begins (two thumbs up, but don't take the kids), after which we reserved our copies of Harry Potter at the big Barnes & Noble (midnight party, yay!) and roamed the shelves for a while, and now we're back at Casa Cleo ordering a pizza. Whee!

I hear Batman is good so I can't wait to see it. Of course I've been in love with Christian Bale since Little Women days.

I'm determined to go to my local book store for their Harry Potter party. I honestly am pretty sure I'll have to read the end first.

Yes! It was Little Women that did it for me, too. Laurie! *sigh*

One of my favourite pastimes is ordering pizza... and we live just a two-minute walk from the pizza place. But delivered pizza is just better than pizza you went and picked up yourself.

Seriously, am I the only HP fan in this universe who has never been to a release party? It really feels like that some days.

I'm glad that you think Batman Begins is good, because my friend is dragging me to see it. I was considering bringing a book and a flashlight, being uninterested in comic book movies. But if it's good, maybe I'll just sneak in a walkman.

i've never been to one!! i only got into HP after the release of GoF and i missed that release, and I didn't know/forgot about the OotP release, and was all 'fuck it, it's coming in the mail tomorrow anyway...'

Have any of the Batman films been kid appropriate? Well, the latter two aren't scary per se, but you shouldn't let children grow up thinking that's how you make movies.

Oh, it was terrible. They were very well-behaved, but the parents had clearly brought their two little boys BECAUSE it was a Batman movie. Bruce's parents get gunned down (not a spoiler, because that's just part of the storyline since time immemorial, and they at least talk about it in every single Batman movie), and each boy climbed into a parent's lap and clung to them for the next hour. And it just got worse from there. Like there were parts involving the Scarecrow that made ME want to cling to someone.

You're just reserving NOW? Omg! LOL I have three copies (roomie, me, neice) already reseved...

(Kids + movies = sometimes ok) I had a "hot date" with an 11 year old boy whom I've known since he was wee... Took him to see his first Star Wars movie in the theater... and there was a little boy behind me sitting on his dad's lap, and at the 'scary' parts, he would occasionally kick my seat- I couldn't be mad because I remember being that little and watching The Empire Strikes Back from underneath a couch cushion. =)

BAT-SPOILERS!

My grandmother and I saw BB last night. We both enjoyed it, but she liked it more. Turns out that she was teh comix überfan when she was a kid (this would be in the 1930s and 40s), so having read all the original Batman comics, she was thrilled. I liked the small touches— Alfred wearing his formals in the future Bat-Cave, the little subplot with the kid ("the other kids don't believe me"), Lt. Gordon's reaction to jet-mode on the Batmobile. The Scarecrow freaked me out, even without his mask. He seriously reminded me of the dentist in Little Shop of Horrors. I wanted him to off himself with his own weaponized hallucinogen.

Hee! I just loved Gary Oldman, period. It's so sad when "nice, normal guy" is casting against type. And he was so good in that first scene with young Bruce--just the right blend of awkward and comforting, I thought.

I liked Michael Caine a lot too, and that surprised me, because I loved the Alfred from the other movies, and was almost miffed they didn't port him over to this one. I mean, I see how why they wouldn't have--too elderly and frail, for one thing--but it was a serious concern at first. Really, the entire supporting cast was top-dollar--I mean, Rutger Hauer in what was essentially a throwaway role? Linus Roache for an extended cameo as the father? Morgan Freeman? So much class, the whole enterprise.

I'm an iron-clad, dyed in the wool fan of spiderman, and I still say that "Batman Begins" is far and away the best movie made from a comic book ever. I agree with Gary Oldman's assessment "If the 'Batman' fans don't like this movie, then there's no pleasin' 'em. They can just stay home."
