Just checking in with something that [livejournal.com profile] backfromspace thought the Firefly/Serenity fans might be interested in:

Read more about prescreenings over here.

As of right now, they still have tickets for Chicago, Dallas, Hartford CT, Kansas City, Miami, Minneapolis, Philidelphia, Phoenix, and Providence.

Good luck everyone!

Hey, I should have posted it sooner. : )

This way there's actual news!

You should buy a ticket. They need more notyetfans at the screenings for balance.

The closest screening to me is Atlanta, and... even if Atlanta weren't sold out, I'm not driving all the way over there by myself to see a movie based on a TV show I never even saw.

Well, maybe not. :P

I had a friend who went to the one here in austin. He got a signed photo from Mal and Book, along with an invite half in chinese about a browncoats screening of episodes with the cast. LUCKY! He says it's the best movie in ages. I can't wait myself, recently becoming a browncoat nut myself.

OT - it's YOUR fault.

I innocently clicked over to narniaweb, started looking at costume photos, now I'm going to be a credited analyst.

(Just because I figured out exactly how the sleeves on the archery dress are put together and why...)

Hee!

Well, the picture is here (http://costumes.narniaweb.com/pevensiesfiles/greenarchery1hi.jpg)

It's described as "fitting closely to the wrists and then trumpeting out a bit" or something like that. I read that and thought "Poor actress is going to spend all day getting her sleeve caught in her bowstring"

Then I actually took a long look at the picture. The costume designer actually knew what they were about! The sleeves ARE tight to the wrists, but on the underside of the wrist they are actually cut in a curve slightly above the actual wristbone. On the top of the hands, the sleeve is longer and a bit fuller, covering the top of the hand almost to the knuckles.

So, it is actually a pretty clever set-up. Nothing flappy on the underside of the arm - perfect for archery, yet the sleeve is nice and graceful seen from other angles.

I scribbled off a quick e-mail to Phil, and he's gonna post the observations and credit me.

I do historical costumes for ren-faires, but am too tubby to pull off any of the film costumes, so I will have to content myself with helping other people make smashing outfits. It's either that or stop eating until December...

It's a beautiful dress... But it seems that they had some extra Elven cloak cloth left over to make it.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't know what idiot thought it would be a good idea to schedule a movie at 10 on a Thursday night, but that's not really you're fault, so, rant over.

You keep claiming to hate the Jossverse, and yet it shows up once again.

Now, now--I never said I hated the Jossverse. I said I didn't care about it, and just couldn't get into it the way tons of other people seem to. I never said I actively disliked it. ; )

The case of the exploding toads is cracked!
http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/story.jsp?story=636520

Do not read before eating:
They were gruesomely murdered by crows with a taste for foie gras.

...all had identical circular incisions on their backs, small enough to be the work of a bird's beak. Then he found something strange: their livers were missing.
...
"Only once the liver is gone does the toad realise it's been attacked. It puffs itself up as a natural defence mechanism. But since it doesn't have a diaphragm or ribs, without the liver there is nothing to hold the rest of its organs in. The lungs stretch out of all proportion and rip; the rest of the organs simply expel themselves."
...
Dr Mutschmann believes the crows went in for the kill when the toads were too busy enjoying the heights of sexual excitement.

It's like an animal version of that urban legend about waking up in the bathtub with your liver missing.

That is the strangest fucking thing I have ever heard.

I read that as cows who wanted foie gras and my brain just gave up right then.

But yeah. What the fuck?

I also read it as "cows" and was very, very confused. "Cows made incisions how?"

Does it mean anything bad if I think that's really, really cool? Maybe my perspective's just a little skewed after biology exams...

From: [identity profile] particle-person.livejournal.com
It means you should probably think about going into science, and maybe biology, although there are lots of other scientific and engineering disciplines that use bio these days. [/unsolicited career advice]

And happy belated b-day. (I just checked your blog to make sure you weren't already a grad student or something.)

Actually, that's exactly what I plan to do :) Although I doubt I'll be working with exploding frogs, but you never know...
And thanks!

FYI, so you know where I'm coming from: I'm a mechanical engineering grad student. We get excited about this kind of thing, because who would have guessed that frogs explode if you remove their liver? Biology is all the rage in mech E these days. In times gone by, mechanical engineers spent their time designing engines. Now we simulate blood flow on our computers (my co-advisee Swami spent the last two years on that project).

Book

No one has asked how you are doing with the book lately, so I thought I would: How are you feeling about the book and coming deadline? Are you still in crazy/manic/frenzied writing mode? Am I asking too many questions?

I hope things are still going well and you feel less crazy/manic/frenzied and more calm/soothed/non-stressed about it. Still can't wait for your book. If it comes out before Christmas, all my friends are getting a copy as their present(and that's really not meant as a suck-up, just statement of fact, but feel free to take it as sucking up if you'd like).

I also hope that everything else in your life is going better - especially the thesis writing and your SisterGirl.

Speaking of trailers, AOL.com has a new "exclusive" Narnia trailer up.

Btw, I added you as a friend, I hope it's ok (if it isn't, I can always undo it, no problem =) )

It would be inappropriate of me to truly express the joy I felt upon seeing the banner in your post.

I hope it is sufficient for me to say that not only have you made my day but that of my immediate family.
