OH MY GOD.

We had bad storms last night, I was afraid Betsy would get zapped, etc. So today I'm working away on "King Arthur," la la la, bright sunshiny day, and all of a sudden there's some freakish power surge and I lose half an hour's work.

The good news is that I had been writing it in Word but obsessively saving it in a private LJ entry (partly so I could look at the layout), so I didn't lose that much--again, half an hour's work trying to hammer out something funny for a battle scene. The bad news is that I just now got back my internet connection back, and while that doesn't have much to do with anything, it pisses me off.

Ooo, Amazing Race tonight.

Also, it looks like New Orleans is set for the weekend of July 23. I was all like, "Bourbon Street and beignets!"

The Lovely Emily: "Is there... y'know... anything else you'd like to do?"

Ideas, Nawlins folk? Keep in mind that we're actually going to be in New Orleans for about 36 hours. It's a short trip.

36 hours - about as long as we were there... We just walked around the Garden District, the French Quarter, took a cruise down the Mississippi, and, depending on how you feel about seafood, went to Acme Oyster House (I still dream about going back to that place).

Look forward to your next m15m, and have fun on your trip!!

You're an Amazing Race fan, too? Hooray!

Keep an eye on the sky tomorrow, because if Lance and Marshall are eliminated tonight, I'm going to emanate visible rays of happiness across the land.

GAHHH MARSHALL AND LANCE. There are so many people I would like to see off, though. Like, Charla and Mirna with the schizophrenic "We can do anything by ourselves! She's not just short!"/"Waaaaa! Nobody is helping us!!" Or Brandon and Nicole with the "Stop making decisions without me!"/"You just gotta trust in God and my giant hair, baby."

Alison and Donny got Philiminated. I missed a few minutes about 40 minutes in which may have explained what their fatal mistake was, but yeah, they came in way last. AND GOOD, BECAUSE ALISON WAS ON MY LAST NERVE.

Also, the bowling moms pulled some nasty shit on Jim and Marsha--told them that they had to exchange their money for local currency when they totally, totally didn't, and cost them a lot of time.

Do you ever read the recaps on Television Without Pity? It'll probably be a couple of days before Miss Alli gets this last episode up, but you can catch up on everything you missed.

Visit Marie Laveau's grave in St. Louis Cemetary No. 1. Leave a red chalk X on the mausoleum for good luck.

Okay, so I'm morbid.

From: [identity profile] thebratqueen.livejournal.com
Actually, please don't leave an X on it. That's vandalism and it's destroying the tomb.

(It's why I specified chalk. So it will wash off when it rains.)

Date: 2004-07-13 04:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thebratqueen.livejournal.com
Yeah, it still damages the tomb. It's so fragile that all the people who write on it, even if they use chalk, only speed up the process of wearing it down. It's kind of like how museums would rather people not touch artwork. One person doing it might not hurt it, but tourist after tourist doing it will start to cause damage.

Leaving Marie a gift doesn't hurt anything though. =)

my dad and i were supposed to be the first father-daughter team. we applied for season 3. obviously we were just *too* entertaining for them to pick us.

seriously, jim and marsha look more interesting on paper than my dad and i, but on tv they're pretty boring.

Totally there with your assessment of some of the racers. My roommate and I agree, it's certainly nothing to do with size that makes Charla and Mirna sorta twitch-inducing; Actually, I think it's the way they TALK.

Hey, when you're in New Orleans, you should go visit this guy. I hear he's really sexxxy. He's got glasses and used to throw peanuts at Geoffery. And this one time he saw Greg naked. And he peed in the shower to make Adam mad. Anyways, you should go see him cause he's awesome and cool and all the pretty ladies wanna do him.

If you want to spend any of those hours with some tasty alchoholic beverage (or virgin, if you choose) in a nice atmosphere, Pat O's is good. For seafood I prefer the Gumbo Shoppe. Taaaasty. If you have any special furry friends in your life, I highly recommend the Two Dogs Bakery.

If you're looking for a place to go out and shake your groove thing Sat night, go here:
1135 Decatur St -- The Whirling Dervish (it's in the French Quarter, but not on Bourbon [which is a good thing late at night])
The night is called No Name No Slogan. Things start at about 11 pm and go on til about 4 am.
Here's a link to a recent play list: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/nolaunderground/message/1141

It's a very eclectic group of people. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. But all very nice. Plus: Cute bartenders that pour with a heavy hand, and a very cool DJ who will meet almost any request if you smile very sweetly.

If you come, look for two redheads and a blonde drinking and dancing and laughing and come say hello (or ask the DJ who the NO LAdies are -- he knows us).

Other than that, all the suggestions have been good. Another good idea: ride the streetcar up and down St Charles Ave. It's only $1.25, and it's a great way to see the gorgeous houses lining the Ave.

Have fun!!!

*waves hi and hopes you and The Lovely Emily have a good time*

The yummiest meal we had while in the French Quarter was at a place called Petunia's at 817 Saint Louis Street - the BEST.

Had to do Cafe Du Monde for chicory coffee and beignets but the absolute best "regular" coffee was at Royal Blend Coffee and Tea house which was a little place in a courtyard at 621 Royal Street.

Also liked wandering around and seeing things like the Historical Pharmacy Museum and the bead shops on Bourbon Street.

I'll shush now - otherwise I'll start trying to save for plane tickets - only went once and am dying to go back.

My personal New Orleans favorite is Royal Street. Just walk up one side and then walk down the other side. There's tons of fun shops you can go into, lots of people to watch, and Bourbon Street is right nearby.

Or, you could be a dork like me and go to the aquarium and the zoo. I usually drag my boyfriend along, under threat of something or other.

As luck would have it, I'm in New Orleans right now!

Avoid bourbon street. For bars, go to Lounge Lizard at decatur and iberville. Great mostly local place. Or try The Abbey. Or any of the bars on frenchman street (I hear the Spotted Cat is good).

A fun little shop is Sideshow, on St. Chartres.

For a really good sampling of local food that actually tastes GOOD and isn't too pricy, go to Coop's Place on decatur near the french quarter. If you can spend a lot of money, try Emeril's, NOLA, GW Fins, Bayona, etc... Another fave of mine that isn't on the pricy end is a place called the Quarter Scene Restaurant (or QSR). I love that place.

Definite go on some of the haunted/ghost walking tours. They are so up your alley. It's too hot this time of year to face the cemetary tours (no shade). The haunted garden district might be nice, I've not been on it yet. If you want to do the garden district the lazy way, just take the St. Charles street car up and back.

Enjoy!

I don't know what your budget is like these days, but a "UPS" (uninterruptible power supply, if I remember correctly) is a good investment, at least one that gives you time to save everything before it all goes so. It is also good to save frequently, like I do when I'm using my image-editing software.

Image I have to say it for the umpteenth time, but you just have a amazing output. I feel like I do hardly anything when I read your journal. I'd buy you a beverage of your choice, if I could. Pepsi? Coke?

Ooo, Coke please!

Before you feel too bad, let me remind you that 1) I'm out of school for the summer, 2) I'm working at home, and 3) "half an hour's work" means "poking at seven words and begging them to be funny." Defiant little bastards.

We had a really bad storm yesterday. (In FL in the summer, 'really bad storm' means 'heavy rainfall that lasts more than five minutes.')
The storm knocked out our electricity for awhile, and as I was reading The Subtle Knife for the first time, I had a fit because I couldn't see the words clearly. And since I have the best luck/karma/whatever, as soon as I got a flashlight the lights came back on.

Ooh, New Orleans! Hope you and The Lovely Emily have a good time.

What to do in New Orleans?

Go to the French Quarter, obviously. While you're their visit the French Market and St.Charles cathedral. The former is fun and the latter is beautiful.

If you're interested, the D-Day and Confederate museums are also really cool.

I think someone said ride a street car up St. Charles, and if you do that then you need to go to Plum Street Snowballs while you're uptown. It's the best.

Oh yes -- have a snowball. BEST way to beat the heat. Also, FYI -- snowballs are NOT snowcones. It's a southern Louisiana thing. I've never seen them anywhere else before. They are cold sweet deliciousness.... mmm......
Great. Now I'll have to go get one tomorrow.

Must definitely go to Cafe Du Monde. Try the Cafe Au Lait. I hope I'm not too late.. Take pictures of Harrahs if you're not of age yet. Teehee. I just go back from New Orleans a week ago or something like that. Must go to all the malls and good stuff like that. But Cafe Du Monde is a definite must.
