The ff.net thing has been taken down. The culprit would like you to know that 1) he is a boy and 2) his self-confidence has been damaged by your flames. I maintain that the U.S. education system started taking a dive when self-esteem became more important than accomplishment ("Everyone gets a gold star just for showing up! Yay!"). You can draw your own conclusions from that.

(Let the record show that I asked people not to flame, by the way.)

Quick movie news: new Batman Begins pics, including one in which Gary Oldman has apparently borrowed David Thewlis' porno stache and fed it Miracle Gro; a higher-quality version of the new Elektra pic that came out yesterday; and new Decipher ROTK cards with some nice images (more added every day).

Don't forget to get your two-week paid account extension here. (Yay! I don't have to fool with mine until the end of July now!)

Am going back to bed now. Mostly because I can; also because I was up somewhat later than usual drinking with college friends (The Lovely Emily, Valerie, Brett the Vet). Whee!

Breaking news: Marlon Brando dead at 80 in LA hospital; cause of death as yet undisclosed.

Thanks for the heads up about the two week extension. Now my account doesn't expire until the end of August. Just in time for me to pay for a year during which I'll have no job, but I will have LJ!!

"IT REALLY HURTS SELF-CONFIDENCE Doesn't it just break your heart? Don't you care about his wounded FEELINGS?

In one of my communities, we just went through a huge hoohah because someone stripped a popular story of its attribution and posted it in its entirety.

When several of us protested and made a stink about copyright, we were called names for it. The story was taken down, but reluctantly, and with, shall we say, very bad grace.

Spelling and grammar are lost arts, of course, as are creativity. How can we expect anyone to know about copyright, or, as they persist in spelling it, "copywright" or "copywrite"?

Yeah, I can't believe it, either--I mean, on an intellectual level, I'm sort of surprised he made it as long as he did. But--there's just something about getting older and watching everyone in the culture you grew up in slowly fade away.

Oh Cleo - exactly!

Between Cary Grant last year and Brando now... feelslike all the men I grew up swooning for besides Han Solo are leaving me! :(

Must go home and atch "Don Juan Demarco". I simply loved Brando in that movie. I want to wake up married to a 60 year old man like that someday.

*lights a few candles and wipes afew tears*

Rest in peace, dear Marlon, great pioneer of swoon gods!

I consider personal responsibility to be more important than making someone feel good about themself. We're not always supposed to "feel good" about ourselves. If we did, how would even learn right from wrong? So I'm glad to hear that his self-confidence was shattered a bit. Maybe he'll think twice before he does it again.

On a completely unrelated note:

Mmm, I think educational systems the world over are declining. In Ireland the government is cutting funding to colleges and secondary schools (Americans read: high schools) to focus on primary schools (Americans read: grade schools) which would be fine by me, IF THEY WERE TEACHING THE KIDS THINGS THAT WERE WORTH KNOWING.

They're focussing on arts and music and stuff like that, which is fine, except that the standards in core subjects like maths have disappeared. There was also meant to be a new science curriculum, which somehow doesn't seem to have materialised.

My cousin (she's about eight) thinks she is the smartest person in her class, because she can name all the countries who just joined the EU and most of their capitals. That's a pretty impressive accomplishment for a kid, but still, it shouldn't be the standard by which she is judged. (The whole best-in-the-class thing is because her parents are fucked up people.)

I just want to say, I respected your wish not to flame and actually thought I was quite nice about it. I feel bad that he was that upset over it.

Wow. Brando is dead? Apparently he was something like 20 million in debt.

Date: 2004-07-02 10:03 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Yeah, I read that the other day. The fallout from the debt collectors should be interesting.

And yeah, I initially felt bad, until I realized that the kid's self-confidence was crushed because he was caught doing something wrong. And really, I read over most, if not all, of the "reviews," and most of them were like, "Dude, not cool. How about you stick to posting YOUR OWN WORK?" They weren't hate-filled expletive-riddled death threats or anything.

Date: 2004-07-02 10:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] katcat.livejournal.com
Oh... Well... I thought it was all "You fucking suck"... I didn't go read any of it because I assumed it was all taken down.

On another note... congrats again on the book deal!

Date: 2004-07-02 10:13 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shanisasha.livejournal.com
Hmm. I remember when I posted my review I encouraged the kid to apologize for what he'd done. I dont remember attempting to address any more than his lack of shame, not his self esteem. Never knew the two were related. I tend to like people that recognize their mistakes better than those that don't. Or maybe I'm just odd.

His "I'm a boy" puzzles me slightly though. And on the use of caps, I refer him back to what my Dad says "Loud doesn't imply right". Glad the issue's relatively solved and we may all go back to our respective Cleoworship =)

And eck! on Brando. Hadn't seen anything about him in a while. Hmm. Curious as to what he died of.

Hmmm....I wonder

Yea, I wonder what Brando died of, too. He was only 80, he still had another good 6 months! Lol....too much Larry the Cable Guy.

By the way, I've always really liked your icon, shanisasha.

Gary Oldman could shave his entire body and still be mega-watt-hott. I'm sorry, that's just my opinion. (And I'm sure like 500,000,000,000 other crazy fangirls, too. Maybe a few fanboys as well....)

LOL! It does look that was, doesn't it? Yikes. That is definitely not a good look. I don't mind Gary Oldman with a sexy stubbly beard, but a porno stache is just wrong lol.

Glad to hear the ff.net thing has been taken down. :)

Sad news about Marlon Brando. Hasn't been on British news yet, I don't think (or, at least, not on terrestrial - then again, I don't make a point of watching often).

Alas, another legend has passed. Although I didn't like Stanley Kowalski (chauvanistic, boorish, brooding boob), I liked Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski. All the good ones are leaving us, and soon we'll be left with the kid that played Young Anakin in Episode One. What then?

Yup, me too. I think all that crud they feed kids in elementary school about how "mean people are really insecure and shy on the inside" isn't really that relevant. I understand the concept, but... since when does being nice actually help that much? And since when does thinking you're the greatest person eva! help that much either?

I love that. It's not just effecting the educational system. It's totally spread to the work place. Work's work, but I can't stand people that think they should get paid for just showing.

So, I'm completely with you on the education thing. I didn't learn anything in school. It was all social conditioning in my opinion. Load of dung and a monumental waste of perfectly good time. Seriously, I was just under the impression that schools in the UK and Europe in general were still rigorous academically, instead of all touchy-feely. Some days I'm tempted to run for President and abolish all fluffy classes and make all the kids take Latin. Heh. That's the kind of leader I'd be.
