IF YOU DIDN'T WRITE IT, WHY ARE YOU POSTING IT?

*goes off into a corner and screams*

ETA: I ought to mention--I've left a "review" asking him/her to take it down, and further steps will be taken if it's not down by tomorrow, so things are under control--no need to go flame. I just needed to vent. Also, it's becoming more and more clear that I'm going to have to lard all of my entries on [livejournal.com profile] m15m with anti-theft warnings ("OMG DUN STEEL!").

Are kids not taught about plagiarism and stealing and giving credit and just leaving things that aren't yours alone in school anymore?

Update: I took papervolcano's advice and added random letters to the reviews URL, ending up with this: http://www.fanfiction.net/reviews.php?storyid=1935243mnkjh

The newest reviews come up first. I'm at the top of page two, at this point. Apparently tons of people (y'all?) have reported them to the abuse team. My message actually says, "You have 24 hours to take this down before I contact abuse," but there you go.

They didn't even have the intelligence to take out the stuff that IDENTIFIES YOU.

*fumes*

I assume you're reporting this, but I don't know what needs to happen with that - if you need help, let me know.

Also, I hate to tell you this, but one of the reviews said they saw it on Potter Puppet Pals LJ - given that they're subliterate and don't know what an LJ is by their own admission, I don't know for sure what they're talking about. But it's apparently elsewhere.

So it would seem. Or else they sleep through class, or play tic-tac-toe.

So on the title page she writes: "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Movie Summarized in Fifteen Minutes. I DID NOT WRITE THIS! Rated for strong language and adult humor. HOPE YOU ENJOY!" But under "author" it's her name.

Huh!?

Add a "hall of shame" page to your website for people who steal your work. Then promote it. That might deter a few.

This is a good idea, actually. I saw one of these on the site of someone who was constantly having her layouts and graphics stolen. (HERE (http://www.jemjabella.co.uk/blacklist.php) is the link) If you click on all the links to the sites in question, you'll see they've been shamed into taking their stolen layouts/artwork down. So it can work, to a certain extent. It also means your fans are constantly on the lookout for someone stealing your work.

I liked the person's suggestion above, to make a "hall of shame" on your site.

I'm writing a review now, not that I really think it'll help much, but...

"Are kids not taught about plagiarism and stealing and giving credit and just leaving things that aren't yours alone in school anymore?"

No. I work at a university, and the number of kids there who think nothing of stealing things online ("hey, you must want to give it away or you wouldn't put it on a web page") is sickening. There's plenty of good 'uns too, but... ugh. I've seen, heard, and heard of enough incidents of plagiarism that I want to barf. I took down a small collection of school essays I'd posted, because I'm sure they'd been stolen for use.

I don't know if it's because they haven't been taught it in school, either - I certainly never had to be told, explicitly, "thou shalt not use sources without due credit", I just knew it was wrong. I blame society. :)

alesfi;sldifjalsdfja.,m. That's all I have to say about that.

(And you know, it's true in a sense: I am perfectly cool with letting you read it for free and not charging you as if it were a newspaper or a book because, yes, it is the internet and it is free. But, you know, I never heard of any material given away free that was okay TO PLAGIARIZE.)

I don't think libel is what you're thinking of -- nobody's printing lies about Cleolinda.

Copyright law may be involved, however.

Wow...I posted a link to m15m in my LJ, but I would never post it in all of it's entirety. I'm just trying to share the humor with other people, but that person took it too far. It's a sad day when you have to put "don't archive/steal" this on your works. stoopid kids.

The stupidity of people amazes me. I guess plagiarism doesn't mean much nowadays when kids can pay to have papers written for them on the net.

Btw, this person (http://www.mindsay.com/talkread.bml?journal=nepegg2587&itemid=50604287) has posted the Azkaban review on his journal. He said he didn't write it, but he didn't credit it, either.

Thanks--I went and left a polite comment to the effect of STOP/DON'T/QUIT. I noticed other commenters had already pointed it out, too--for some reason, I think having the author magically show up destroys the illusion that it's just the internet and no one will ever find out, though, so I left my own anyway.

Well, I just wanted people to understand that this wasn't some oh-so-subtle cue for everyone to go flame the hell out of the person. Personally, if I'd seen something posted at ff.net with "I didn't write this" at the top and I didn't know anyone involved from Adam's housecat, I'd still be all like, "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
