Okay, problem: I am trying to move music from my computer to the iPhone (and vice versa, now that I think about it), and I'm not finding a way to do so without just doing a blanket sync. The problem with this is that I have music on the phone that I don't want to get wiped and would, in fact, like to transfer to the computer, but I also have music on the computer that I'd like to move to the phone. (Moving recently purchased music was not a problem. We are talking about music that iTunes does not recognize as purchased because it wasn't purchased from them.)
The thing is, I have moved music both ways before on the other computer, so I'm confused because I'm not seeing similar options on my setup. The help section did mention something about only being able to do whatever on one computer--if that's the problem, is there a way to, I don't know, "revoke" the doingness from the other computer and tell iTunes that Lizzie is the one computer my phone needs to sync with?
(OMG WHY IS THIS SO HARD)
ETA: YAY! EphPod/CopyTrans turned out to be a snap.

Date: 2009-11-23 01:30 am (UTC)Senuti is Mac-only. I've heard pretty good things about Pod to PC (http://www.podtopc.com/) (there are reviews of it here (http://download.cnet.com/Pod-to-PC/3000-18545_4-10900147.html)), which is supposed to do the same thing.
Cleo--good luck! It was a damn nusiance getting music off my iPod and onto my new laptop after my old laptop died.

Try that and see if your options make more sense afterward.

Date: 2009-11-23 01:13 am (UTC)Here's what you do:
In Itunes, go to Settings and (I think it's the last tab), find the option to use your iphone/ipod as an external hard drive. This requires disabling the auto-sync function.
Also, make sure you have the "Manage my music folder" option checked.
Now, in Windows Control Panel (assuming you have Windows 7 which I think I read), find "Folder Options" (might be easiest to search on it).
Click the View tab, and in the Advanced Settings, check "Show hidden files, folders, and drives". Hit OK.
Hook up your iPhone, go to My Computer and then open the drive that Windows shows for the iPhone.
Drill down through the folders until you find the "Music" folder - you'll see a bunch of folders named something like KQMC and PRLF and such. Tada, you have found the hidden music on your iPhone.
Just drag this over to your computer's hard drive, and then use the iTunes folder import function to add everything. iTunes will automatically move the files into your music folder, and use the embedded file tags to name everything correctly in your library.
To sync from your computer to iPhone, just open itunes and select the songs you want to sync, and drag them to your iPhone icon.

Date: 2009-11-23 01:15 am (UTC)Anyway, for actually transferring the music files, there are a few different ways to do it. I actually wrote up a quickie article on this at Advice.com, so I will just point you there (http://www.advice.com/article/2009/07/28/Advice+on+transferring+music+from+iPod+to+computer). Like I said, I don't know for certain if it's the same with an iPhone, but...probably? I assume any of the programs like EphPod would be the same, even if the manual method isn't identical.

Date: 2009-11-23 01:36 am (UTC)So you're going to need a program that can either 1.) speak those protocols as well as iTunes (this is possible and I'm certain it's been done on Windows) or 2.) hijack iTunes (or a specific library of it to be precise) into speaking the protocol for it while it handles all the other crap. I'm not really familiar with any programs that might do this on Windows; I hear DoubleTwist can do it fairly well on the Mac; and gtkpod with libiphone and gvfs (GNOME) will do it on Linux, I think.
(full disclosure: I wrote a pretty decently-sized portion of the first few versions of libiphone, but most of my code has been rewritten :) the joys of open source)
