All right, party people! Got a conundrum for y'all comic fans from Moviehole:

Mike Allred, creator of “Madman”, says Robert Rodriguez will be bringing his vision to screen once “Sin City” is over.

"So, at this time George Huang, a long time friend of Robert's and writer-director of the indy hit Swimming With Sharks is writing the Madman treatment based on the outline Robert and I put together”, Allred tells Newsarama.

“So, when that's approved we kick into the screenplay and if approved shoot the movie. We already have our Frank "Madman" Einstein; He's star of 2003's biggest money maker. I'm pretty sure it was the biggest box office flick (that should get a few tongues wagging). So, it either happens or it doesn't. It seems to me this is just gonna be one of those projects that just take a long time to hit the big screen. Keep in mind I was first approached about making a low-budget Madman movie right out of the gate in 1992. It should be obvious why I stopped holding my breath. But when I'm called on--just try to hold me back!"

Now, unless Allred is seriously not up on his movies, he's referring to Return of the King. (Looking at other movies on the list, he might mistakenly think that X2 or a Matrix film made more money--Hugh Jackman or Keanu Reeves? But they're both up to their eyeballs in comic movies right now.) Which... doesn't narrow down much. I'm not familiar with many comics, so who in ROTK seems like a plausible candidate for Madman?

ETA: Solved? [livejournal.com profile] wirrrn says down in the comments, "Yes, he is referring to ROTK. In several issues of MADMAN, Allred has said his dream casting for the titular character would be Viggo Mortensen. :a few moments pause whilst I envision Viggo in skin-tight white spandex: and we're back!" Okay, I was all aboard this train until the white spandex, y'all.

Hmmm, looking over the ROTK actors... I guess... Viggo Mortensen? I never have read any of the Madman comics but that's just a guess. Wow, that is a lot of hints from that article.

I think Viggo's a good guess too, although you could also include Orlando Bloom, the hobbits, and maybe to a lesser extent Karl Urban or David Wenham in the list of possibilities. But these actors all have vastly different looks and ages, which is why I was wondering if a Madman aficionado could look at the group and say, "Oh, definitely that guy."

Yeah, hopefully someone would turn up and choose someone. I was just amused by the fact that the upcoming Madman might come from the ROTK cast. ^^;;

Did you see G-Men From Hell, the other movie based on Allred's work? It's good, campy fun. If you liked the Adam West Batman show, I'd suggest you rent it.

It almost definitely won't be what LOTR fans would want to see him in, as it will be a bit willfully odd, somewhere between Hellboy and Mystery Men, but I think it will be exactly what a certain big-eyed actor will need to gain some healthy distance from his furry-footed persona. Let's face it, folks; 'tall, dark, enigmatic hero' can get you work in just about any Hollywood picture you like, so Viggo is in no need of an image change just to get work. But how many roles do you think Hollywood has lined up for someone whose image is now indelibly carved as 'sensitive, overwrought martyr with cute prosthetics'?

I don't know if I'm right, but I will say that Elijah needs it more than anyone else in the cast. He'll need to break type sooner than anyone else in the cast. I actually hope it's him. He needs an offbeat modern hero film under his belt, before he becomes Mark Hammill.

L o L,
has liked Elijah since Witness,
and would hate to see him do a mutant death scene in a Guyver sequel

I'm pretty sure it's not Billy Boyd or Dominic Monaghan they're getting for Madman, but I'd almost say they need a new role more than Elijah Wood or Sean Astin, for example, do. People have at least seen them in non-LOTR movies.

But I think you're right, Elijah Wood's also a good guess--I know for a fact that he loves comics and has been attached to at least one other comic movie (Mort the Dead Teenager, if I recall correctly) since I've been doing the site.

Looks like Dom is already lined up for some small lead and ensemble roles, though only one of the films looks really strong, and if it doesn't have enough money behind it, it'll be rental fodder. Mark Hammill syndrome approaches. Hope he lands something decent and adult soon. Preferably, an American drama with someone like Alicia Silverstone.

Sean is involved in a good number of things as well, it seems. I would expect him to take some of his hard-earned hobbit money and dump it into his own production company. I give him three years before he's making his own big films, where he writes and directs himself.

Billy I'm worried for. I just read his name in connection with a Chucky film. Ick. He needs to get himself into a film starring Hugh Grant or Samuel Jackson. And then move into romantic comedy and perhaps more historical adventure. It looks like Hollywood will give him undistinguished bit parts, like in Master and Commander. But he has to stay away from B-movies, or he'll become 'dad who gets hacked up two thirds fo the way through'. And he'd better watch those historical dramas, too. A musical, on the other hand...

Only Sean will have literate leading roles in the next two years handed to him, like Viggo has.

Elijah will have tonnes of stuff thrown at him, and most of it will be rubbish. He nees a Blade Runner. He needs to steal a role or two from Matt Damon. Or better yet, Ben Affleck. I like the guy, but he's becoming a rash.

L o L,
thinks too much

It's likely that Billy Boyd's doing a voice for a Chucky film because Brad Dourif (Wormtongue) is the voice of Chucky. And Billy has the lead in a romantic comedy lined up. The production fell afoul of some tax issues so it's been delayed, but he's still committed.

As for your commentary on Dom, does Alicia Silverstone act in dramas? Does she even make movies anymore? She seems to be basically all TV all the time now.

Elijah has two lead roles filming this year, in Everything Is Illuminated and The Yank-- one about a young Jewish man attempting to visit a village where his grandfather hid during WWII, the other about a gang of havoc-wreaking soccer fans. Even if they both tank, EiI has a literary pedigree and The Yank looks to be full of fistfights; with those two projects and a role in Sin City, surely he should be able to establish himself beyond LOTR.

Btw, I realize this isn't a widely held opinion, but I sort of think Mark Hamill turned out okay, since he eventually became a fantastic, widely employed voice actor. Among many other things, he's been the voice of the Joker on the Batman cartoons for the past ten years or so.

I have no real interest in Alicia. None. Substitute that for Reese Witherspoon. She seems to fit the bill. Point is, 'actress who gives space to male lead and doesn't play hopeless waif too much'. In other words, not Sandra Bullock. Or the equivalent. I see Dom quickly falling into Aidan Quinn roles. Not a bad thing. Just not a lot of work there.

And yes, Mark Hamill made it through. But it took a very long time, and he still hasn't really recouped on being the hero of a major sci-fi fantasy epic. I love his voice work. I just think he got shafted. He's not starring in anything. And when your most high-profile film appearance in recent years is riffing on your past success in a Kevin Smith film, you can't be precisely termed a raving success. Fortunately, Mark has a fantastic sense of humour about it all, so he's doing fine. Just not as well as he might have. Should have, I tend to think.

I'm shutting up now. Hope I haven't irritated you.

L o L,
all yakked out

Actually i had seen Dominic Monaghan in a BBC prime series called 'Hetty Wainthropp Investigates' WAY before LOTR...i had never seen Billy though.

I read the last comment (up till now) and seems it's gonna be Viggo :D

Man, I read Madman for a couple years and I can't really picture anyone from ROTK as Frank. I guess Elijah would make more sense than Viggo, but still . . . I'd have to see him in some white jammies before passing judgement.

WOOT! SOLVED.

Of course... does that mean they've actually landed the guy? People have been known to say people were signed on when they really weren't, to drum up press. But other than Alatriste, I can't really think of anything else Viggo has coming up, so...

Hey,

Dude, if white spandex is involved, hold out for more than *one* million more...

-Well, Viggo did not one, but two films in which he was nuzzled suspiciously chummy-like by a horse- I don't think he has much of a bargaining position....

(Aww, thanks.)

-No probs. I must admit I liked VAN HESLING, though it was a guilty kind of like. I thought the mysterious ability of the nude-assed werewolves to grow pants just before returning to human form was very considerate of them...
