Aight. Updated the Digest. Chris Weitz for His Dark Materials? Rose Byrne for Lois Lane and Johnny Depp for Lex Luthor? Also the new Alexander trailer, the new Spike Lee trailer, and more Harry Potter pics and interviews. I'm off to check my email and thence to bed.

His Dark Materials?! Damn!!! I wanna read those books before the movie comes out!!!

but sadly, it's not popular here in the philippines, so you won't see any copies of it in the bookstores...

however, there is a big surplus of HP5 and LOTR...

I just finished the first book. Picked it up at random because there was a polar bear on the cover, I just have this thing about collecting polar bears. Damn glad I did pick up the book. It was great! Now I have to go find the rest in the series.

It is--the three books have long been out. I think I read them two Christmases ago: The Golden Compass (overseas I think that one's called The Northern Lights), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. You can get them on Amazon pretty easily.

I think it's Colin Farrell playing Alexander, not Val Kilmer.

Yeah, Val Kilmer's supposed to be his father. Like that's any better.

I saw the "Alexander" trailer last night before a "Freeeeezy New York" screening. I liked the elephant vs. horsey shot! How very...weird.

And Colin's mullet makes me giggle.

Chris Weitz is an excellent choice - at least, if Hugh Grant's comments on the About a Boy DVD are to be believed, both of the Weitz brothers are as smart, as educated, and as talented, as the first Pie movie was dodgy. So, yay!, and where be the other brother?

Oh, and that one Alexander pic looks more stunning than the entire inspired-by-Star-Trek production design of Troy. Off to download the whole thing...

That's from the Alexander movie? WOAH. WOW. Who's starring in it again aside from Colin Farell and Jared Leto (I hope I'm right about these)?

From what I know, Angelina Jolie (A's mother), Val Kilmer (A's father), Rosario Dawson (wife Roxanne), Anthony Hopkins (Ptolemy), and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (someone).

Gah! That trailer! Too. Much. Pretty.

Please confirm that there will be pretty boys kissing. Please? If so, I'm camping out. From the looks of it, Colin's a much better blonde bombshell than Brad Pitt.

Farrell on 'Alexander': "It's Not a Gay Film!"
29 January 2004 (StudioBriefing)
In an apparent attempt to dispel widespread speculation about how his Alexander the Great film will approach the issue of homosexuality, Colin Farrell, who appears in the title role, has told a gay-oriented website in the U.K. that the film will not dwell on the character's sexuality. Interviewed by the website Gay.com , Farrell said, "There may be details of Alexander's sexuality in the film but [director Oliver Stone] wanted to portray the figure accurately and didn't want to ignore facts surrounding his sexual antics." He went on to suggest that homosexual conduct was commonplace in Macedonian culture, adding: "It's not a gay film, it's not a straight film ... it's just a f***ing story!"

Farrell: Alexander Is Not All About Bisexuality
28 January 2004 (WENN)
Irish hunk Colin Farrell has shunned reports the homosexual elements in his new film Alexander will dominate the plot. Maverick director Oliver Stone has included details of the Macedonian warrior Alexander The Great's bisexuality in his movie, but Farrell - who plays the title role - insists such references are only minor to the story. He claims Stone was keen to portray the historical figure accurately and didn't want to ignore facts surrounding his sexual antics. Colin says, "There was no term for it then, it was just part of the culture, what happened was older men, 50-70 year olds, used to spend the evening with younger men and impart their knowledge to them and then they'd go to bed together. It's not a gay film, it's not a straight film - it's just a f***ing story."

Thanks for the link to the trailer. I feel distinctly underwhelmed. The problem for me is Colin Farrell. He just does nothing for me, and that frightwig makes me want to laugh. And was he using an Irish or American accent in his 'conquer death' speech?

It's such a shame, as I was really looking forward to a good Alexander movie, but despite its credentials, I'm not sure this is it....

uh, hi! i went traipsing through your journal looking for a link i thought i saw here, and i found this entry about his dark materials and chris weitz. can i be ranty for a moment?

one thing phillip pullman did really well with the hdm series was his writing on class. in spite of the fact that he's fairly far up on the class food chain (he teaches at oxford, fer chrissake), he has a greater awareness and sensitivity towards the different classes of people and creatures in his ultraverse than jk rowling does in hers. (hello, dobby the house elf!) after seeing his other work, visions of buffoon gyptians are dancing through my head.

well, at least mike white has nothing to do with this...
