This is just a quick note to say that I did take Camille back to Best Buy and exchanged her for Camille 1.2 with absolutely no problem at all. I had this entire spiel prepared about how if I couldn't even get the OS to boot then even if they fixed it I couldn't really trust the computer to not have any other problems, but I got about halfway through and the guy at the Geek Squad just waves his hand and goes, "Yeah, no, you don't need to deal with that." And they exchanged us for another CM 5570 without a peep, didn't think of some mystery fee to charge us, transferred the service plan over to that serial number and everything. And while I was there, I picked up that 1TB hard drive as well. I haven't hooked Camille 1.2 up yet just because I was like, "I gotta eat first. My low blood sugar is not dealing with this." And now I've stopped by to report on this last visit, but I'm about to go upstairs and deal with it because if C1.2 is also going to be fussy, I need to know it now.

Also, regarding the last entry--I really don't have anything against Macs or Mac users. The PC/Mac thing is a pretty personal issue (God knows why), and whichever one works for you, God bless. The first computer I ever really worked on (that wasn't, you know, some ancient rudimentary DOS-run thing in my high school typing class) was a Mac at an internship I had before college, and I really just didn't like it. I've used PCs ever since; they're more affordable for me and I understand how to use them better.

But whichever side of the divide you're on, if you want to get rude with me? Yeah. You are really not welcome here.

Hope it goes nice and smoothly for you this time!

I love my Mac with a burning passion, but when someone is in trouble, it's not the time to say "I told you so." The only appropriate responses are "oh, I'm so sorry," and "how can I help?"

Anyway, here's hoping all the drama is behind you now!

Let's hope the new Camille works out. Good luck! I've been looking at options for a new computer lately, and Camille sounds like a pretty good baseline for me to look at. Great specs at a great price.

And yeah, I completely understand where you're coming from. I respect Macs and Mac users, and am simply a PC guy myself. Same thing goes with the whole Firefox/Internet Explorer debate, and the XP/Vista debate.

I use IE. I like Vista; it runs just fine for me. I have many friends who use Firefox and prefer XP, and I get that, I really do. They also respect me enough to not get in my face about it.

All too often, when I've mentioned to people that I use IE, I get a slew of "IE SUCKS YOU SUCK USE FIREFOX YOU SUCKY PERSON". It's rude, and really doesn't make me want to agree with them. If I wanted to be prosletyzed at, I'd go to church.

(Sidebar: I keep hearing about how XP is way better than Vista and that Vista sucks, but nobody has ever been able to explain to me why this is the case. I'd really be interested to know, but I can't ever seem to get any answers aside from "YOU ARE SO STUPID WHY ARE YOU USING VISTA".)

It's sad, I'm a diehard mac user but I don't hate vista--I hate that microsoft sent out RIDICULOUS specs to OEMs who then preinstalled Vista on machines that simply couldn't run it properly. No, your 512k of RAM is really not going to cut it here. Get a high-end machine and you'll be fine with Vista; get a crappy little cheapo computer and Vista will run like molasses. THAT'S why people so often tote around Vista hate; the entry-level machines that are being sold with Vista simply can't run it.

(We had a county-wide Tax Free Weekend this past... uh... weekend, and the BB guy said they sold 700 computers. He was seriously just like, "I am so tired. We all are. Just take it. Whatever. I don't care." So that might have had something to do with it.)

Ugh, the bitchiness is totally unnecessary. I say that as someone who loves her 5 year old G5 iMac. But I'm not naive enough to think that everyone can afford one or even want one. This is the reason I haven't replaced my *own* machine yet! At the moment, I'm trying to figure out a way to get a newer machine without going more broke than I am, and I am all for getting a PC if that's what you can afford. Whatever; a computer is only a tool.

So, I'm glad the Best Buy guy didn't give you any guff. I hope new!Camille boots without complaint. :)

Man, I hate how combative people are about their personal computer preferences. As a Dell owner, I've had Mac-lovers jump down my throat for the mere sin of owning a PC, and I know the reverse is true, too. Different things are more convenient for different people - why the hell should it matter to anyone else?

Good luck getting everything up and running, and hopefully Camille 1.2 will serve you well!

I used to be extremely anti-Mac, but my wife was quite the opposite. I started getting used to Macs when I was taking film classes, and then two years ago we got ourselves a Mac to replace our crummy PC (by which I mean it was just a crummy computer my wife's former stepfather had bought from Wal-Mart, being a PC had nothing to do with it) and I was converted.

Now I'm rather anti-PC and pro-Mac. However, in the end they both have their own strengths and weaknesses so, as you say, it's a very individual thing.

For one thing I find it's a bit easier to upgrade a PC than a Mac because you can practically gut it and rearrange everything if you so choose. Macs don't really work that way...

I hope you will like Vista okay. I did not notice very many substantial changes except for what they did to the new Office Suite. But even that eventually smoothed out for me. And if you have the processing power, Vista can be very pretty.

I'm so glad the computer problems are fixed. :D

I've had the temptation to build my own--and I mean, literally, build it, because after owning a Tandy for 5 years back in the '90s, I fear no motherboard or OS. ::ahem:: However, I love the fact that Dells come to me nicely put together, with software installed, and all I have to do is connect cables and press a button.

As far as Macs/PCs go, I could be happy with either one. The first computer I learned to use was an Apple IIc. My first PC was a Tandy. I've owned PCs ever since, most of them Dells. But I will not get into a pissing match over which system is best.

I'll probably get a Dell or a Lenovo--but either way, my next computer will not only be an all-in-one, it will be able to do everything but fly. :)

Hrrrmm.....speaking hypothetically, if C1.2 is also a bit fussy, do you have a backup? Have you looked at ASUS' Web site to see if this is a frequent problem? Or even googled them? I'm sure you're not the only one, considering the BB people exchanged it pretty quickly.

Computer problems suck. Definitely. Spyware got on my fianceƩ's mother's computer and it was in the shop a good month, getting it wiped, saving some files, trashing others, getting the malware off, blah blah blah. And it's still friggin' slow to this day. And now loud. Dunno what's up with that.

Please don't mistake all of us for a few vocal assholes. I came to Macs after years with Commodores and homebuilt Windows PCs, and they are awesome, too. I just presently like the Mac for being low maintenance and easy to deal with for what I'm working on.

Pretend the PC debate is like politics - I know there's some total raving assholes out there, but there's plenty of sane moderates on either side.

I am the same way about Macs vs. PCs. I used Macs all through Journalism school for my various classes b/c that's what they had (all that stuff about better for working with graphics, etc.), and I was plenty versed in using them/good at using them, but I had SO many problems with them that I've never had with PCs, and I'm very computer savvy. The ones in the lab crashed nonstop and did crazy things and were not intuitively organized for easily finding where your programs and files were, etc. I don't hate Macs, but I wouldn't choose them.

My dad, on the other hand, loves his Mac. It's a personal thing. *shrug*
