Not doing too much today, even by our standards. My stepfather's out drumming at the American Village in his Revolutionary soldier coat; Sister Girl and her boyfriend came over for lunch. Mom used her new ice cream maker to whip up a pretty simple vanilla, which we then put homemade hot fudge sauce and fresh strawberries on (kind of like a chocolate-dipped strawberries sundae). Melted really fast, though. We're going to freeze the mixture all afternoon and try it again tonight (the bowl lives in the freezer as it is).

She also wanted to go see a movie yesterday, and while she kind of wanted to see Angels & Demons (Wolverine was also on the table. Terminator Salvation was not), I pointed out that I could absolutely guarantee that Star Trek would be worth the money, something I could not say about the other three. So I saw it again; she loved it. And in the car on the way home, she revealed that she'd seen the entire original series as a kid and had gone around making the Vulcan fingers all the time. I can't confirm this, but she might have even been a young Trekkie. And here I'd thought I'd have to explain who everyone was! So that went well.

So today and yesterday, I've felt pretty mellow, in a pleasantly limp kind of way. The next Secret Life is almost ready to go, but it depends on a couple of pictures that in turn depend on a new "set" that will involve a good bit of cleaning. (You know the bookshelf/printer table next to my file cabinet, the one that appears at the edge of so many pictures? Well, there's a reason you've never seen it properly, because it is a wreck.) Yeah. Maybe I'll get to that tomorrow. I have a sudden urge to reread some comfort-food book for the eleventieth time. Jane Eyre, maybe.

Mine too. I have a well used paperback copy at home and I have it in eBook format on my reader (which I always have with me) so it's always readily available whenever I need it. And you never know when you're gonna need some quality time with Jane.

Comfort food and Jane Eyre are always a good way to spend an afternoon.

When school ends for this year and all my 'teacherly' duties are done I think is will be the perfect time to spend a few days with Jane Eyre.

Man. Don't get me wrong, it was and is a great book, but the language is so dense....I find myself again, in awe.

Really? That's been one of my top favorite books since I was thirteen. I read a lot of 19th-century stuff, though, so I may be more used to the syntax. I love history/nonfiction, for example, but a lot of it is so dry that it just puts me to sleep, so I usually find a couple of authors I really like and just read anything they write.

I hope you're feeling better! And I love hearing about your mom. Star Trek was fantastic, despite me knowing almost nothing about it, besides a few bits of The Wrath of Kahn. I found myself giggling gleefully at a lot of the character interactions, which I didn't expect at all.

Have fun reading your comfort book! It's funny to hear the different books that we keep coming back to. Mine tend to be the Wrinkle in Time series or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I went to Star Trek for the 2nd time last night; convinced my totally non-trekkie/non-geek sister to come. She liked it! (I knew she would, of course, because it is a fantastic movie, but I kind of thought she might grumble for spite).
Hope the movie venture means you're feeling at least a little better!

My parent's aren't gamblers, but on a recent trip for their anniversary, they play a little slots ($10/each) and won like... $250. What was their idea of a perfect way to spend the money? They spent some on a little hall table at an antique shop, and the rest was spent on movie tickets to take myself, my husband, my sister, her boyfriend, the two of them, and our godfather out to see Star Trek together last night. FUN times, also- 2nd time we'd seen it, but we'd all seen it with different people. My family just does cool stuff like that, well cool, NERDY stuff...

One of my comfort-food-reads is Practice to Deceive by Patricia Veryan. She writes Regency romances, but they're not all bodice-ripping although there is some of that, too.

And also seeing the corner of your printer makes me feel infinitely better about mine. My printer is more of a trash catch-all than a printer. (sigh)

Alas, after nearly a decade and a half of Jane Eyre love, I now find the story so excessively melodramatic that I chortle my way through it. Poor Charlotte Bronte probably never thought she'd be viewed akin to Terry Pratchett by this reader.

Dude, that Jane.. such an effin' cock-tease, and that's just for starters.

Book suggestion

From: [identity profile] suzeclues12.livejournal.com
After a long, leisurely soak in Jane (NEVER skip Jane! Once the mood is upon me, I have to reread it myself....hmm, where is my copy...), might I suggest The Eyre Affaire by Jasper Fforde? Jane and Rochester play significant roles in the book - and provides a fun giggle (unless you hate alternative-reality/fantasy novels - a friend of my still hasn't forgiven me for making this suggestion to her).

Very much seconded! Also, there are more in the series, and the main character ends up in all sorts of novels (and plays). Hilarity ensues! Er, they're also very enjoyable thriller-types.

Also, much as I love Jane Eyre, I always get hugely irritated by the part where she runs away from Thornfield and conveniently ends up at her cousins' house. OI, BRONTÉ - NOOOOO.

This sentence awakes in me the same admiration as when my best friend and I recently found out that her mother, who I've only known as a conservative WASP-ish lady who never has a hair out of place, played D&D in the 70s - it only made me love her more.

... defending Angels & Demons, of all things, is not how I intended to end my Monday night.

But actually? I had fun. It's not good, IMO, and it's SO not for the ~cinema is ~srs bsns~ crowd. That said, it's 1) much faster-paced/more engaging than DVC, even if the unnecessary exposition still dragged it down 2) the Art Direction is beautiful (and if anyone has a Hot Priest kink, Ewan McGregor alone is worth the ticket. I'm not even a fan of the guy.); 3) all in all, pretty enjoyable. The Science vs. Religion premise is barely touched on (they go for the thriller rather than the theological discussion), but I actually liked that glimpse of a compromise, because it's just so much more interesting to me than two hours of faithful and heathens calling each other names.

I came out torn between "Well, that was underwhelming" and "Actually, it doesn't take itself half as seriously as DVC, and it wasn't half-bad. Plotholey, but fun."

I personally think the reason it hasn't been talked about much since it opened is because this one isn't about the conspiracy, so there's no controversy to fuel. Everyone (except the villains) is quite reasonable here. Where DVC went "Raaahhh! Religion! Conspiracy!", A&D went "OK, some of us believe in God, some of us don't, and now that we got this out of the way, can we please do something about the bad guys?" from the get go. I went in for the fun and the popcorn, and that may be why I enjoyed it more than I care to admit.
