Let's have something a little more cheerful while we're waiting on a reliable Natasha Richardson update. Vanity Fair restages West Side Story as a photoshoot:

Vanity Fair really hit it on the nose with the casting. The 22-year-old Brazilian beauty [Camilla Belle] received help from Tony (Ben Barnes, also known as Prince Caspian), Anita (Jennifer Lopez), Bernardo (Rodrigo Santoro) and fellow Sharks played by Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder) and Jay Hernandez (Grindhouse, Ladder 49). The Jets are played out by Chris Evans (Riff) and Cam Gigandet (The O.C., Twilight), Drake Bell (Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh), and Robert Pattinson (Twilight).

Suddenly that crack I made about "a Jets and Sharks rumble breaking out" seems weirdly prescient. Full gallery here.

Aw, that makes me so happy. I recently saw West Side Story performed in Washington, DC, (it was fantastic) and the guy who played Riff was in the film of Hairspray as Brad (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2357535/).

I saw it too! Loved the interweaving of Spanish into the songs and dialogue, plus Anita was awesome and the leads had great voices. Haven't heard how it's doing since its Broadway debut, though.

I have serious issues with WSS as a piece itself (forget the host of other issues I have with the movie), and I'd be very offended by the casting for a friend of mine from PR (who hates that any Latina from any country seems to be suitable as Maria - Camilla is from Brazil, no less, where they don't even speak Spanish!) - but - everyone they picked here is a completely cracked out choice, which somehow makes it acceptable? I think? And the pictures are very pretty, so I'm letting my bias against the show slide just this once. ;D

Well, to be fair, VF often photographs people separately and then composites photos together for really elaborate spreads. Like, people who are touching are probably really there together, but I imagine a few groupings were composited in. I cannot imagine Jennifer Lopez and her entourage and her handlers and her whoever not holding that photoshoot up for hours upon hours, for example, particularly with everyone in such elaborate poses.

OK, that's awkward, because I'm stupid and totally thought they were being snarky by picking a non-Latina-who-just-has-dark-hair-and-stuff for the shoot, you know, a la Natalie Wood. *facepalm* But whatever, it works and it's awesome. I love Vanity Fair shoots so f-ing much. I have long debated getting a subscription just for the photos.

Please don't take this as provocation, because I'm honestly just curious, but I've always been baffled by this (US?) notion of "latinos" as non-whites. As in, people's nationalities (Mexican, etc.) equaling race (some sort of non-descript non-white "latino" race?). Where I come from, "latino" is more of a cultural term than a racial one, so I always double-take when people say stuff like "J.Lo's race? Oh, she's latina", when she's obviously white to me.

I suppose what I mean is, I will never get the notion of Mexicans in general being a US term for non-white (even if lots of them ARE non-whites), but I know very little about Puerto Ricans. Is there such a large proportion of mixed race PRs, etc., that the US had to start calling everyone "latino" so as to not offend the mixed race communities--or does it all stem from them speaking Spanish?

Wow... just- WOW. Man, as always, Vanity Fair brings the pretty like nobody else can. Ironically, while I haven't any love for the shows/films the majority of the players were in, I feel they were all incredibly thoughtful choices for the characters they portrayed. Jennifer Lopez, for anything else you can say about her, is incredibly stunning. Just... yeah, GOOD.
