help I'm choking on a swallow of tea

Pre-production is over, Jackman informs us, and it's time to start shooting. Please welcome! Natalie Portman in strapless lavender pink and Ben Stiller in sunglasses and a Joaquin Phoenix beard! Philip Seymour Hoffman and Steven Spielberg snicker in the audience as Stiller rolls his head around... oh God, this really is an extended Joaquin Phoenix parody, isn't it? "What's going on?" asks Portman. "I just wanna retire and stop being a funny guy," he mumbles. "You look like you work in a Hasidic meth lab," she says. "What are you going to do?" "I could... be a cinematographer," he mutters. "Good luck with that," she says. And then they're showing the film clips and the audience is laughing through them at Stiller--the camera pans out and we finally see that Stiller's wandering aimlessly around the stage. It's both hilarious and horrible, to be honest.

(Also, we happen to see Frank Langella sneaking back to his seat right as they announce the winner.)

Best Cinematography

Changeling (2008): Tom Stern
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008): Claudio Miranda
The Dark Knight (2008): Wally Pfister
The Reader (2008): Roger Deakins, Chris Menges
Slumdog Millionaire (2008): Anthony Dod Mantle

Winner: Slumdog Millionaire. "Thank you, Ben, Natalie," Anthony Dod Mantle says. "That was very... inspiring." You know, we can kiss the nominated actors' asses for ten minutes straight but technical awards are treated like massive jokes. I mean, go with Epic Seriosity or Doing It For the Lulz, but pick one.

Anyway. Still waiting on that short film.

I'm *really* hating how the Dark Knight is losing out in the technical categories, ESPECIALLY the makeup category.

::sigh::

It's not looking pretty for the film at all.

I'm actually not that broken up about it not winning in makeup because Benjamin Button was pretty spectaular for makeup. I saw it the day it came out and I was like "Yup. Totally got the Oscar for makeup. No contest."

I am, however, still quite bitter that The Dark Knight wasn't nominated for best picture. Kate Winslet was amazing, but The Reader nominated for Best Pic? NO.

WTH with that mini awards for the SciTech awards shoved between two sets of commercials? Are they trying to make people miss it? They are seriously starting to disrespect all the technical people - and that's not cool.

Yeah I felt kind of weird about them making a huge joke during an award that means a lot to someone.

But I also laughed.

Do not even get me started about this! Cinematography is, as a photographer, the category I get the most passionate about, so to say the snickering drove me mad is a bit of an understatement. Sigh.

Such is the way of the world. And it kind of bites...

But then again, people don't (usually) come out of movies raving about the cinematography...

Seth Rogan at least tried. James Franco didn't give a damn. And both Jennifer Aniston and Jack Black should be forbidden to attempt speaking French.

I did feel the technical awards may have gotten a bit of a diss. But, frankly, I'm not gonna remember which movie won best cinematography a month from now anyways. If one movie rakes up a bunch of technical awards, that is what I'll remember.

You aren't. I detest Ben Stiller and don't think he's the least bit entertaining.
