Oscars, part 4
Feb. 22nd, 2009 08:30 pmAnd we're back. Jackman: "The script has been written and rewritten; a brave executive says go." Except for that brief interlude with the animated nominees. I don't know. Hell, at least they didn't have an animated character present like they usually do.
WHY HELLO THERE, Daniel Craig. And Sarah Jessica Parker. We have a junky-looking set with intended to represent art direction, I guess--curtains and chandeliers chucked here and there. Smooth jazz noodles in the background to go with that whole "nightclub" aesthetic they wanted. It may be Hugh Jackman's garage, I don't know.
Best Art Direction
Changeling (2008): James J. Murakami, Gary Fettis
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008): Donald Graham Burt, Victor J. Zolfo
The Dark Knight (2008): Nathan Crowley, Peter Lando
The Duchess (2008): Michael Carlin, Rebecca Alleway
Revolutionary Road (2008): Kristi Zea, Debra Schutt
Winner: Benjamin Button. Donald Graham Burt thanks David Fincher for staying out of his way. The poor set decorator gets to wedge a "thank you Mom and Dad" before they play them off the stage.
Costumes! COSTUMES! "What does the fit of a suit say about a character who doesn't care how his suit fits?" That's deep, yo.
Best Costume Design
Australia (2008): Catherine Martin
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008): Jacqueline West
The Duchess (2008): Michael O'Connor
Milk (2008/I): Danny Glicker
Revolutionary Road (2008): Albert Wolsky
Winner: The Duchess, which I pegged the moment I saw the first trailer. It's that kind of movie. God bless. I don't know what all's coming out this year, but I have my eye on Young Victoria. Aw, Michael O'Connor thanks Keira Knightley, "one classy lady."
SJP: "We don't have to tell you what the makeup artist does." Craig, deadpan: "Just look at us."
Best Makeup
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008): Greg Cannom
The Dark Knight (2008): John Caglione Jr., Conor O'Sullivan
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008): Mike Elizalde, Thomas Floutz
A very strong category this year, although the sheer amount of achievement in Benjamin Button assures that it does, in fact, win. Good LORD, we are moving fast. Is this because so many of the big-star presenters allegedly dropped out, and they just went, "Screw it, we've got Daniel Craig here, he can just present five in a row"? Greg Cannom rattles off the fastest, longest list of people with the least vocal inflection I've ever heard, by the way.
Please welcome! Robert Pattinson and Amanda Seyfried! He just stands there trying really hard not to laugh while she starts the scripted spiel. They are here to present Troubled Romance in the Movies. Of course they are. "I had to become a vampire," he says, somewhat... sheepishly? "I had three fathers," Amanda Seyfried says (referring to Mamma Mia!) in kind of a confessional "Yeah, we've all been there" tone. Aw, Coldplay's "Lovers in Japan," I love that song. Anyway: Lovers in the movies of 2009, lots of Twilight and High School Musical and Kate Winslet. And people hitting each other. And of course, by the end, lots of kissing. In the rain, when possible.
Next up: a short film from Judd Apatow!
