Good morning, starshine
Jan. 22nd, 2009 07:14 amOscar nominations coming up in about twenty minutes. Then I'll be working on (another) catchup linkspam and a Secret Life update, plus trying to get some more actual work done today. And yes, I did hear about the Dakota Fanning/New Moon thing. There'll be ETA(s) in a bit after the nominations are up.
(I can't believe I got up for this. I was all like, "Whatever, they'll be still there when I get up, they don't self-destruct in five seconds," and then I woke up at 6:50 without even meaning to anyway.)
ETA: So. Robert Downey Jr. and Heath Ledger both got Supporting Actor nominations; Kate Winslet only got nominated for lead; big cheers in the auditorium for Melissa Leo for Best Actress and Michael Shannon for Supporting Actor; Benjamin Button had a surprisingly (I thought) strong showing; and your five Best Picture nominees are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, and Slumdog Millionaire. AwardsDaily, if you can get through, has typed up the list of the categories we know.
ETA: WHERE IS THE COMPLETE LIST? I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE COSTUMES!
ETA: THE LIST IS ON THE MAIN OSCAR.COM PAGE BUT NOT ON THE NOMINEES PAGE. WHY ARE PEOPLE STUPID. Wait, are there really just three songs nominated, and two of them from Slumdog Millionaire?
ETA: IMDB has a list you can actually read. There really do seem to be only three songs. Snap.

eta: I also totally want A.R. Rahman to win for best score, because every time I see an interview with him, he is the most humble, adorable man ever.

Date: 2009-01-22 01:59 pm (UTC)Wait, really?! Oh, my God, that's AWESOME. I've been listening to that soundtrack nonstop for a week now.
Oh, oh! Is "Jai Ho" one of them?! *checks* YAY! My two favorite songs on the soundtrack! And maybe the entire cast can go onstage and do the credits dance? 'Cause that would ROCK.

Date: 2009-01-22 02:06 pm (UTC)And yes, cue arguments of 'Heath will win because he's dead'. I loved his role and I think he deserves the nomination, but how many will moan and bitch if he wins that he got it because he's dead?
Also, Wall-e getting 'Best Animated Picture' nomination is a load of trollop. It was a great film.

Date: 2009-01-22 02:41 pm (UTC)On a slightly different note, I'm happy Josh Brolin got a nom--it's in Heath's category, so he'll most likely get nothing, but still. He might actually be Heath's, er, biggest contender, because I recall hell breaking loose last year when he wasn't nommed for No Country for Old Men. The Academy might want to make it up to him.

Date: 2009-01-22 02:50 pm (UTC)Truth be told, I'm not sure how many of the BP noms will survive the test of time. The Reader, for all the controversy, is, in essence, another Holocaust film (in a year filled with good Holocaust films), Benjamin Button will lose relevance as soon as the studios catch up with the technology they used, because that's essentially all that's it's getting praised for, and Frost/Nixon and Milk are essentially fictionalised documentaries that don't necessarily bring lots of new stuff to the table--haven't seen them yet and can't wait, really, but as for being timeless... doesn't sound like it.

Date: 2009-01-22 02:26 pm (UTC)How do you feel about that? The animation bloggers aren't big fans of animated movies having their own category when they compete with live action in the theaters and especially now that a lot of live action movies have enough special effects animation to practically be animated films with some humans. What's your thought?

Date: 2009-01-22 02:35 pm (UTC)Although yeah, I can see how it's a deterrent to nominating something as both Best Animated and Best Picture--it would feel, wrongly or rightly, like overkill. And the reason to nominate an animated film alongside live action would be, IMO, to say, "The story here is just as good and important and moving."

Date: 2009-01-22 02:52 pm (UTC)Can we just save time and give Heath Ledger's family the Best Supporting Actor award now?
I always look forward to best Makeup Effects. Out of the three listed, I vote for HELLBOY. But only because the artist who makes Mickey Rourke appear vaguely human is not nominated...
Marisa Tomei is nominated for Best Supporting Actress? Jack Palance's ghost will come to the stage and give her the award no matter who wins!
