Okay, does anyone happen to have the basic installation software for the Canon PowerShot A60? Or can you tell me what I need to download off this page (I'm not really seeing anything except updates to software I don't have)? It's whatever would be on the "Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk." I just need to be able to plug the camera in and retrieve pictures; I have all the fancy editing software. I took some great pictures this morning for the Eowyn (Not Eowyn) auction--I just can't get them onto my computer.

Would it maybe be easier to pick up a card reader? The 12-in-1 or 15-in-1 units are pretty cheap at most office supply shops.

We had trouble at work keeping track of the cables and drivers for every camera that goes out in the field, and finally solved that problem by confiscating all the cables and giving card readers to anyone involved in copying photos.

Hmm, that's a thought. I think it came with a card, or an extra card, or... I don't even know. I am shamefully new to this digital camera business. I had one back about ten years ago that was sort of stupidly easy to manage, so I'm at sea now.

Heh, understandable. I ended up with a card reader for my dad's old digital camera because the battery liked to die mid transfer, and I haven't looked back, even though my current digicam goes like 4 days on a charge.

Did you select an operating system to see what software was available for it?

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Yeah, I did--it's Windows XP, if that helps any.

If the software that popped up didn't help you, then I don't know what else to tell you besides calling up customer service.

If you're running Windows, you don't need software to get pictures off a digital camera. There's a Wizard that's part of Windows that will do it for you; I've had three digital cameras now (two Canons) and never once installed the software.

SWEET

What might this wizard be called? Like, detect hardware or something?

Okay, I found Scanners and Cameras, but it doesn't even have Canon on the list. Fnarr.

I'm not sure if you've gotten this sorted yet, but I know with my Canon (Power Shot A560), I hooked it into a USB port and the Windows "Hey, what do you want to do with this thing?" ...thing popped up, and I was able to get pictures that way. I wanna say it's got "picture" in the title, but I can't remember, and my camera's downstairs and I don't wanna go get it 'cause I'm lame. Either way, I've never installed the Canon software on my machine, and I've had the camera for over a year.

Also, in Windows' control panel, there's a scanners and camera area, which might prove helpful when the camera's plugged in.

Make sure the Canon is turned on and on the right setting ... "view pictures" I think.

I have the same camera and like the posters above, I never had to install the software, Win XP did it all for me :)

Yes, I used to have a Canon A60, and as long as it's turned to the view pictures setting, plugged in to the computer, and turned on, XP should pop up a little "what do you want to do?" window.

Unless Cleo doesn't have the proper driver (which I doubt but she can reinstall it) or she's disabled the pop-up

If she's disabled the pop-up ... um ... actually I'm not sure what to do

Oooh yeah. But there must be a way to download the pictures! There must be!

I think that an icon for the camera might appear under "My Computer" ... gah. I need to get out my XP and test this out.

If you can hook the camera up via USB (I use the cord that came with my mp3 player), you can use the Scanner and Camera Wizard (under Accessories). Plug the camera in, turn it on (under the "review" function, not camera function) and the computer should automatically recognize it. If it doesn't, try opening the wizard. If that doesn't work, go to My Computer and it should be there as a Removable Disk.

I have a Canon and I never installed the software.

on my system ( winxp ) the usb ports show up on the Mycomputer...

click on right usb port the camera is plugged into and you should be able to drag n drop the picks.

hope this halps.

Wait, they show up in the My Computer folder?

for some reason all my usb ports are treated as drives by my OS...

Huh... That would be really convenient if my computer did that. Unfortunately, it doesn't. Odd!

See, I looked there, and it acted like I was stupid and there was nothing there. Theoretically, it should be the F drive, because that's where my Zen or my thumb drive always show up, but--no dice.

With my old Canon, you had to select a certain setting to make it so that the computer recognised the camera as an external drive before it showed up as one - IIRC you could do it it somewhere in the same settings where you set the camera's time and date.

I think that's called the PTP mode or something similar. It's some kind of special transfer mode for Windows, kind of like MTP or whatever for MP3 players, that lets it load the camera files without looking like a hard drive (with a letter and everything). If that makes sense. I wouldn't have the first clue how to find that mode option on your camera, though.

maybe try a different usb port?

My old cheap camera worked that way, but now I have a fancy Kodak and it makes me go through the included Kodak photos program to select and upload photos, and it's actually more of a pain. I miss the days of dragging and dropping =(

I was just googling for drivers, but does this sound like what you were looking for (http://driverscollection.com/?H=PowerShot%20A560&By=Canon)?

There are a few sites that have the drivers. Here's one of them (http://www.driverfiles.net/Cameras/Canon/PowerShot-A60/download/page,sh,39348,430,17,.html)

I don't know if you've gotten it working yet, but my computer sometimes decides it wont recognize the drive and so I have to restart. Once I do that and plug the usb back in it magically appears. I have a Sony, but I've had XP and 2 macs and never had to install software or drivers to get my camera to show up under the My Computer section. For my PC it showed up as a removable drive similar to the Zen or any old flash drive. Sorry if this is completely useless information. Good luck.
