cleolinda: (why you do this)

Aaaaand our fridge just exploded in a cascade of half-melted ice. I don't know what happened. I opened the freezer door to get the ice cream and a waterfall fell out, that's all I know.

I have to say, I really admire 2008's dedication to sucking, all the way up to the very last second.

ETA:

There. I feel better now.

Was your house built on an ancient indian burial ground, by any chance? Or, more seriously, have you guys had the electric systems checked out? Because you've lost a lot of appliances recently, and unless they were all really old, there's got to be a reason behind it.

Well, as bittersweet (I think it was bittersweet?) pointed out a while back--if all the appliances were put in years ago at the same time, that may be why they're all dying together. Although, yeah, I think we should have that checked anyway.

Yeah, if they were all put in at the same time, that makes more sense. But still! Better to have it checked than risk electrical fires.

You know, I think I need an icon like yours. Not the same one, just... something one step up from WTF Keira.

It's an extremely useful icon. [livejournal.com profile] marlo made it a while ago, but I still use it all the time.

It was me, although maybe bittersweet said so too? I got in an argument with spectralcow about it, anyhow. My point was that if the electrical system were at fault, your more sensitive electronics would have gone first, long before heavy duty appliances. (Caveat: Unless all the sensitive electronics just happened to be on a different circuit.)

Well a lot of people put electronics on power bars which offers token protection. I don't know of anyone that puts a fridge on a power bar. But if it was an electrical issue you would also have light bulbs burning out at the drop of a hat.

People don't put fridges on surge suppressors because they're not very sensitive to surges. It takes a heck of a surge to burn out a motor-- you have to put so much power through the coils that you burn or melt their insulation and get a short.

I remember in year 7 of my parents new house the fridge, stove, vent fans and hot water tank all went one after another(5 year warranty). Then every one else's in the neighbourhood went as well over the next few months. It's a shame appliances how have such short lifespans now, 2 year warranties and less than 10 years life expectancy for most.

10 years? Really? Damn. We have a freezer in our garage that's about 40 years old and has been with the family through three moves and two states. The absolute best part? It came free with some kind of meat subscription service.

(Meat...subscription...service.... Excuse me, I have to go laugh at my own idiocy now.)
