Here's how you can tell I'm a bit more lackadaisical about the Oscars than I used to be: "Eh, Golden Globe noms at 7 am. They'll still be there when I wake up." So here they are. Surprises: love for In Bruges and Pineapple Express; nothing for The Dark Knight or Milk except supporting actor and actor, respectively. Mostly I'm just surprised that they didn't kiss The Dark Knight's ass so they'd have more movie stars show up and more fans tuning in. I mean, the Globes are kind of a joke even by awards show standards ("Be aware that the small motley local crew who belong to the scandal-riddled HFPA won't grant membership to real journalists at the prestige newspapers across the world"), so it's not like this would have been beneath them.

That said, I really do enjoy liveblogging the Globes a lot--they're the Drinky Oscars! So much more fun.

(Best headline on the subject I've seen all morning: 2009 Golden Globes: Good Year For Jokers, Midnight Tokers.)

Meanwhile, Globes dodge strike bullet, Oscars may not. An Oscars without writers = crappy; an Oscars without movie stars = POINTLESS.

Also, just because it is awesome and I happened to see it right now, The 'Watchmen' International Trailer Is Here!

Is it sad how gratified I am that Dollar Bill gets shown on-screen? Don't think his death is ever rendered on the page -- IIRC, just a passing reference to his cape getting tangled in one of the text pages -- and it's a good addition to the tenor of the narrative, I think.

I like to refer to the Golden Globes as the Drunk Oscars. Everyone is usually three sheets to the wind and they are wandering around the place like alzheimer's patients.

can't wait for Watchmen. i'm trying to find the graphic novel to read it before i go, but the trailers are so freaking awesome that i can't help it.

the actors shouldn't strike. we're in a recession. they don't need more money. and depriving america of the only form of diversion that helped us through the depression is going to make us have to watch only reality tv and turn us into sheep.

well... bigger sheep than we already are. does this mean we'll have to bring back storytime as the evening activity?

As an Israeli and an aspiring animator, I am so proud of Waltz With Bashir. Now it needs an Oscar nomination (or two!!! OMG I'd die if it'd get two).

I'm really glad Colin Farrell was nominated for In Bruges, but I wish Brendan Gleeson had also gotten some love. The reason the movie worked so well is because of the relationship between the two actors and their characters. Ah well.

I've watched the Golden Globes off and on over the years, and my favorite moment ever (and this may be for all awards shows) was when Christine Lahti was in the bathroom when she won. Yay for alcohol, I guess.

In Bruges

If there's an actor's strike, does that mean TV dies again? I'm not sure some of the fledgling shows could survive two strike years in a row.

In Bruges is the biggest surprise to me. I didn't expect it to get nominated for practically anything, despite the fact that Colin Farrel blew me away.

Yeah, The Golden Globes are always more fun. I though everyone watched them because alcohol is involved. No? So I'm the only one who looks forward to Drunk!Sean Penn every year?

It would have to be the Globes, because the Oscars are srs bsns.

Interesting list of nominations... but I would still argue that Wall-E should have gotten a Best Picture nom instead of Best Animated Film. I mean, for one, it's not fair to every other animated film made this year. XD And two, it could take the spot that they shoved Mamma Mia into, become c'mon.

I'm happy with the actor nominations, though, mostly because they're the most random things ever.

I'm right there with you on Wall-E. Really, I've always taken issue with the way the GGs split movies into drama and musical/comedy, as if all musicals are comedies.

If the actors ruin the Oscars this year, I will not be pleased.

And I'm still staring at the Best Supporting Actor category and trying to make some sense out of it. I've seen Milk and Revolutionary Road and there are in those two movies alone four performances that are very much worthy of nomination. And yet, we have Tom Cruise. Something is wrong with this picture.

Mostly I'm just surprised that they didn't kiss The Dark Knight's ass so they'd have more movie stars show up and more fans tuning in.

Its stars are aging character actors and a guy who's more known as Batman than his real name.

I'm not surprised it didn't make it too far--I predicted it wouldn't. As much money as The Dark Knight made, even overseas, he's not an inherently popular character internationally. And I imagine nobody from WB wined and dined the press.

And uh... Heath Ledger, who is massively popular with the public after he snared legions of fangirls with "Ten Things i Hate About You" and "A Knight's Tale", impressed grown-ups with "The Patriot", and then starred in the first ever blockbuster gay movie before he tragically died.

As selfish and horrible as it is to say, this is the one year when I actually wouldn't mind if the Oscars were cancelled, Oscar whore that I am, since I'm abroad this year, and so a) won't be able to watch them anyway, and b) won't have seen any of the movies featured.

But a strike would mean problems with TV and "New Moon" (as if it doesn't have enough already, *grumble grumble*), so I really hope it doesn't happen....

Update to [livejournal.com profile] helpvera from a few days ago: the goal has been reached, Vera's house is safe, and the community has even raised a comfortable cushion and enough extra to repair a broken sewer. Vera gives thanks and blessings to all involved. I still find it horribly amusing that the Golden Globes get noticed. It's like "Hey, fellow press club members, wouldn't it be great to meet movie stars in person? Let's throw an awards show and somehow get it on television and maybe they will bribe us with gold watches and stuff" And that's almost exactly how it went down.
