Butting in here, but I saw that movie version. My friend rented it off Netflix and showed it to me, and then I got the DVD for her for her birthday. We watched it quite a few times after that.
Although she has a much greater love for it than I do, I liked it so much. The beginning childhood scenes threw me off with their artistic quality, since it was quite a difference from the rest of the film (all I really remember is heavy-handed symbolism and RED EVERYWHERE). The rest of the film, though... so good. So. Good.
