Today's Journal Birthmonth Flashback: Let's be lazy and link to The Happening in Fifteen Minutes from earlier this summer, since it's out on DVD today. I highly recommend that you at least Netflix it or something, if only to shock and amaze yourself with the number of things I did not, in fact, make up. (Extramarital dessert... the mood ring... Oh, I saw and like Fight Club. And I don't think I dislike HBC because she isn't technically his wife - I like plenty other shacked-up celebs just fine. She just...bugs me. Couldn't honestly tell you why.

I suspect a part of it may be because of Tim Burton's earlier work: it was eerie and perverse, but not so commercialized. Nightmare was great, Frankenweenie perfection.

Tim Burton's always been hit-or-miss with me anyway. I didn't like Scissorhands, but loved Sleepy Hollow. As I've disliked the last few Burton films, maybe I'll end up loving Alice.

I am morbidly curious about this "hour of extra footage too intense for theatres" w/ The Happening DVD, honestly. How much crackier can it get?

Fair enough.

I can understand that feeling cause I've always disliked Gwyneth Paltrow but can't really come up with a great reason why.
I hate that she won the Oscar over Cate. <- biggest crime right there.
I hate that she wore that UGLY pink thing that made her look totally flat and yet people gushed (asskissers!)
I hate that everyone thinks she's so hot but I don't think so.
I think there's a reason that Brad Pitt & Ben Affleck dumped her to marry other people.
I think she doesn't really have much talent but coasts on the star power of her parents who are/were phenomenal (I HEART BLYTHE SO MUCH)
Yet people have treated her like a muse, inspirational. WHAT?
She seems like such a whiny thing though I do think she's grown up a little.

But none of those really hold up for long and its not like she stuffed the ballot personally to take the Oscar away. But I still don't like her! :D

That DirecTV campaign

I've found that DirecTV campaign tone-deaf almost from its start; the only commercial that's appealed to me was Shatner's (he knew it was self-parody and he can do self-parody). I wish the campaign hadn't gone to Poltergeist either, and I turn the channel when it comes on, but I've done that with a lot of those ads.

Still, creepy, and I wonder how many people who worked on that ad felt a little uncomfortable with it.

Captain Picard's Twitter feed?!

Captain's Log: Two nights of consecutive musical theatre is just not enough for this Starfleet captain.

I...I'm just...so happy.

And I finally read your entry on Samson Agonistes today. I've been listening to a lot of Regina Spektor lately, and her song "Samson" inspired me to go back and look the Bible story up, because it's been a while (I remember watching a Samson and Delilah cartoon when I was younger - don't ask). I pretty much came to the same conclusion you did: Samson is a moron with anger management issues.

I totally don't have enough of a life to properly Twitter about it, but, you know, it's a thing, and it's kind of fun to try to get a thought out in 140 characters. Like, you know, random things that a rarely-blogger like me doesn't feel warrants a whole post.

Also, if you're not keen on using OpenOffice (nothing wrong with it; I've just had problems with the installation getting corrupt, which is annoying but okay since I keep installation files), I tweeted (http://twitter.com/nanceoir/statuses/950231225) at you about Google Docs, which auto-saves like mad. It's not as robust as stand-alone programs, but it could be good for drafts and quick things or... something, and you should be able to copy/paste it into your chosen word processor with ease.

(Also? I've got Word 2000, so don't feel bad about your '03.)

I'm throwing my agreement in with those who recommend OpenOffice. I've been using this program for several years now, and will never use Word again (except for the pseudo-Word on my PDA). And best of all, 'tis free!

I sort of thought it was because he was on that show for like, five years after his Power Ranger peers left. It was kind of sad. (Although he was my favorite too.)

I love how they only listed Kay Redfield Jamison as the author of "An Unquiet Mind," because it would totally take the "news" bit out of the story that she wrote "Touched With Fire," which is about bipolar disorder in creative geniuses, YEARS ago.

Out of the two main actresses in Rachel Getting Married, Rosemarie DeWitt is the one I think deserves an Oscar nod. Debra Winger's ten minutes were pretty damn heartbreaking too.

Argh, why does Hollywood need to remake everything? Jar City was so good, and a remake wouldn't do it justice. It was also very specifically Icelandic, so I don't know how a remake would work.

I'm using the Mac version, NeoOffice, and it works like a sweet thing should work.
