Woe, I am a football orphan (Alabama-Georgia game tonight, you see) and I can't go see Let the Right One In because the only two people who would have gone with me are working (and I can't drive, because I suck, or I would be on that like white on rice that goes to movies all by itself), and Word's autorecover function didn't recover jack after my computer crashed so I have to redo a day's work all over from memory, and every time I get to a footnote where I can kind of vaguely remember what I said but not really, I just get madder. So basically, I am feeling very sorry for myself. Except not really, because I'm actually in a fairly decent mood. I just feel like whining, apparently. Or pouting, I guess. So I will use an icon of the best pouter in the business.

Also, I would really like to write some True Blood recaps, but I'm not allowing it until I get some damn work done.

I can't drive either. And I grew up in Rural Canada, so my lack of driving is especially pathetic.

I would be able to drive, except I sucked on Wednesday. D:

You know the whole "3-point turn" thing? Um.

I kind of made it like, a six-point turn. And hit the curb at least three times. And ended up going down the wrong lane.

Because I suck.

The worst part is, I did well enough to pass except for that one thing. DDDD:

And it was my second attempt in... several years.

BECAUSE I SUCK.

(I'm going in for my third try this week though, figuring that if I can just practice the damn K-turn, I can pass. Wish me luck. o.O)

I can drive, I mean, I know how and everything. Even got thirteen years of experience to boot. Unfortunately I am lame and currently don't own a car because I am *cough* poor.

Hey, at least I have Squeaky Bike. And I can pretend that I'm riding around town because I'm so green. And green is cool, right?

Right?

Very cool, I assure you.

Cooler than having to beg rides because even your bike is broken. D:

(Actually, it's not 100% broken, but years ago, I got hit by a car while riding it - didn't do anything to ME, other than shake me up a little, mind, but the rear wheel is permenently a little bent, so that the tire no longer fits right on it, and is perpetually flat. Oddly, still technically ridable, but SO AWKWARD. o.O. It doesn't help that our area is not particularly bike-friendly, either, with distances being more calculated for car-drivers, and the drivers being both insane and apparently capable of interpreting "large bike lane" to mean "turn lane", despite signage point out it's NOT a turn lane, and despite the solid line separating it from the main road. No, really. No, really. I've seen them do it)

I'm sorry about all that. I still don't drive either, so I know whereof you speak.

Word's autorecover function didn't recover jack

There is a Titanic joke in there somewhere.

True Blood recaps would rock out loud. And maybe cheer you up as well! I kind of really love Tara after the scene where Lafayette takes her to a party and she shoots that one guy down.. Heh.. She started out as a bit annoying, but that scene was just total win.

"He just shot him in the balls!"

When my dad asked if I would be up to catsitting for a coworker of his Friday through Sunday, one of my first questions was: "DOES SHE HAVE HBO?" Because, alas, I do not, and so I have to wait for someone to kindly upload each new True Blood episode online before I can see it.. Woe!

You know what? My computer has crashed three times, and the last time I saw the blue screen of death I lost about 30 pages of work for a story I was writing. (Why didn't I back it up, you ask? Because I never learn.) I TRIED SO HARD to retrieve the document... In the end I lost $100 because the Geek Squad (after they told me they could back up my files) said they didn't work with my hard drive and charged me for it anyway. In any case, I had to rewrite everything (begrudgingly, mind you), but I ended up with a much better story, if you ask me. I know it sucks, but just take this as a chance to outdo yourself. ;)

P.S.: You don't drive? I don't either! (I even have a license, which is pathetic, but I hate to drive.)

Ah, football... my college just had our homecoming game, and we lost, by 63-14. 2008 sucks even for our football team, evidently.

And, I actually caught the last half of True Blood Wednesday, and... I just kept going "...the hell? wait, wait... the hell?!" during it.

(Also, I got bored and made my icon today, and I figured you might appreciate it. ;3)

So my friend Katie, who spent her formative years in Arizona, does not drive. She lives in Brooklyn. I live in Manhattan. We, as a rule, do not drive, but it's still just a bit odd that she doesn't. We also have a friend from Bermuda who only knows how to drive a scooter, which is HILARIOUS.

So why don't you drive? I will accept "just didn't wanna."

Date: 2008-09-28 07:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wmetoile.livejournal.com
Also, for the record, I'm 27. So this isn't a new thing. Katie has been not knowing how to drive for like 11 years.

And, um, could someone punch Anna Paquin in the mouth so she could learn a Southern accent? Because her Rogue accent sucks and her Sookie Stackhouse accent sucks harder. Pun, um, yeah. Is a pun.

Panic attacks, mostly. It took me years just to be able to drive down residential streets and not lose my shit, but I'm still to the point where if you put me out in a major intersection, or one of those terrifying deals where five or six roads meet up, I completely blank out. And then I feel horrible about it, and I don't practice to get better, and I end up being nearly thirty and unable to drive.

Here's the problem: we don't have public transportation here. We just don't. We have like two buses and a trolley. If you don't drive, you are screwed. And/or at the mercy of your friends, who get really sick of you, I'm sure.

Soon to be one bus by what they keep talking about on the news.

Speaking as someone who is 30 and doesn't have a driver's license, who lives someplace where we get those yellow rural route postal order form things on occasion, I feel your pain. We have some public transportation, but only miles away from our house, so it's pretty useless for me.

I did do some practice driving in a closed Kroger parking lot one night last... month, which was the first time I'd been behind the wheel in a about three years. Didn't break down in tears at the end, except when I realized my learner's permit was expired and I'd have to retake the stupid knowledge exam. (No, I don't know how many feet it takes to brake when I'm traveling at 35 mph, and, since I don't have eyes that calibrate exact distances at a glance, I don't much care.)

I have the added bonus of having no friends in the area, so I'm left to rely on my parents or my sister for rides places, and they don't always want to go to Target for some sneakers or Michael's for some yarn or something.

I did, however, get out to a free preview of The Duchess this week, thanks to my mom being interested in seeing the movie.

You know, I live in Birmingham and I actually see the buses and the trolley around all the time. And I have never seen anyone in them. Every time they pass, I glance over and they are empty. Well, except for the driver. Obviously.

I can only conclude that they are ghost buses, and if any hapless mortal ever ventured to step up inside, they would never be seen again.
