2008 rides again
Sep. 20th, 2008 09:49 am4 killed in SC plane crash; drummer, DJ injured: "Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and celebrity DJ AM were critically injured in a fiery Learjet crash in South Carolina that killed four people, authorities said Saturday." They both apparently have "extensive burns." Apparently Perry Ferrell and Gavin DeGraw have been confirmed as not being on the plane. MTV is saying that one of the four killed was Barker's assistant, and two more were the pilot and co-pilot. No word yet on who the fourth person was.
ETA: The fourth victim was Barker's bodyguard, and the whole thing sounds pretty horrific.

Date: 2008-09-20 04:12 pm (UTC)I read that DJ AM had burns to the face and that Travis was burned "from the waist down," which sounds pretty dire.

Date: 2008-09-20 04:32 pm (UTC)I know. They seem to have the worst luck. Though, admittedly, they catch a lot more planes than 95% of the rest of us, so the statistics have got to be skewed against them purely because of that.

Date: 2008-09-20 08:49 pm (UTC)Big commercial jets rarely crash -- so rarely that when one does, almost anywhere in the whole world, it makes the news. For a whole host of reasons, small planes are not nearly as safe. (Also, helicopters are even more dangerous than motorcycles, and then once you get to hang gliding ...)
I don't mean to make light of those who've died in small planes. But it doesn't reflect on the dangers of everyday air travel.

Date: 2008-09-20 04:16 pm (UTC)Gavin DeGraw and Perry Ferrell are on ground here in Columbia...and the plane overran the runway, hit the lights on the runway, went through the fence and into the embankment that was across the street from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
An eyewitness says the plane was a fireball when it hit the embankment and that DJ AM and Travis Barker were in the road, trying to put the fire on their bodies out.
ETA: They're in the Augusta Burn Center...and they are "stable but critical"

Date: 2008-09-20 04:27 pm (UTC)It sounds absolutely horrific. I'm surprised I didn't hear sirens or anything...I'm about 15 minutes away from the airport in my apartment. I'm hoping the best for the survivors and the officials are going to go through the wreckage and try to find out what caused all of this, if there's an airplane reason.

2008 is not a good year to be a celebrity...

Date: 2008-09-20 05:50 pm (UTC)That's really tragic. I'm going to sound so inconsiderate saying this, but I'm glad Travis didn't die and I hope he makes it through his injuries.
I'm especially concerned about him and not the other people, though. God, celebrity ate my brain and I didn't even know it... *kicks the dirt disgruntledly*

Date: 2008-09-21 06:16 am (UTC)This year has been a hell of a year for things like that hasn't it? There was that passenger plane in a Madrid and the one in Russia not so long ago.
Hell of a year.
