2008: Still sucking

I'm going ahead and posting early this morning, because... well.

George Carlin, Irreverent Comedian, Dies at 71.

Everything seemingly is spinning out of control. Thanks for confirming my general fear that the world is ending! (Yes, I am developing a phobia about 2012.) Man, I thought you only got this kind of scaremongering on TV news.

'I Love the New Millennium' premiering on VH1. Or, as the Onion's AV Club put it, I Love Ten Seconds Ago.

McConaughey photog claims surfers attacked him. I haven't watched the video, but the freeze-frame still is hilarious.

Images: New 'RocknRolla' Photos (the Guy Ritchie/Gerard Butler project); Photos from Martin Scorsese's 'Ashecliffe.' Why? Why are we changing the name from Shutter Island ? Is it so people won't know it's a book and go read the ending? I haven't read it yet myself, but apparently it's super-twisty--my point is, for whatever reason, I love the name "Shutter Island." It just sounds spookier than "Ashecliffe," which sounds like something from a Merchant Ivory film, quite honestly.

Trailers and clips: Exclusive: New 'Wanted' Featurette; Worth Watching - 'Diminished Capacity' Trailer With Matthew Broderick.

'Get Smart' whips Mike Myers' 'Love Guru'; Indiana Jones Up to $683 million Worldwide. I am deeply relieved by that first headline, by the way. I don't want to deploy a heavy phrase like "moral imperative not to see this," exactly, but I was getting nervous that the same nation that went to see Epic Movie might suffer another relapse. If you make a movie this bad, there should be consequences, IMO. Crawling in at #4 works for me.

I kind of thought that George Carlin would live on forever. Too mean to die, y'know. :(

Though the Scarlett Johansson Is A Clone! story did make me LOL. Is that why she can't act?

i love ten seconds ago the new millennium was inevitable.

somehow, i love money (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Love_Money:_Challenge_Show) seems even worse to me. the promos give me hives.

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too. Although I absolutely love the name of the show--it's so blatant that I keep expecting it to be a commercial for something else, like the Geico "Tiny House" ad.

George Carlin, it's a sad loss for the [comedy] world :(

[identity profile] callmesyd.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. He was my favorite philosopher.

[identity profile] roatan.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This just ain't right.

[identity profile] darth-snarky.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Excuse me, 2008, but it's "celebrities die in threes" not "celebrities die by the handful." KNOCK IT OFF.

[identity profile] franklanguage.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well...they're going to keep dying, so you might as well bury your head in the sand.

Oh, Jesus, I thought it was just me.

Do not worry too much about 2012. As somebody who studied Mayan archeology in college, I can pretty much tell you that when the good folks on Coast to Coast AM are doing the Mayan calendar wrong.

One of the things that bothers me the most about this is the fact that a lot of the 2012OMG! stuff is heavily based in the exotification/cultural appropriation and manipulation of the Mayan people.

Trust me, if a theory is based on the idea that indigenous peoples are magic and if its then been compounded with any number of pick-n-choose New Age gobbledygook, it's not something to worry about.

None of this, however, will stop me from throwing an AWESOME End of the World party.

[identity profile] laddical.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
My rational brain knows this and believes it, but even as someone who understands the tactics of fearmongering, it's still hard to look at what's happened in the past couple of years - not just celebrity deaths, but life in general - and not think that something is seriously fucked up. And 2012 sounds like as good a year as any for it all to come to a head.

RIP George Carlin. :-(

If the world ends in an election year, I will be SO pissed. What a rip-off!

[identity profile] corkdorkdan.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ashecliffe sounds like the portmanteau for the latest celebrity couple. (DanRad's dating Ashley? ZOMG)

George Carlin isn't allowed to die. He has to come back on Wednesday and deliver us from the shitfest that is 2008! Separate the sheep from the goats, the Democrats from the Republicans, etc.

[identity profile] foresthouse.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, George Carlin. :(

Diminished Capacity looks good. Man, there are so many movies I want to see this summer/fall.

If you make a movie this bad, there should be consequences

SEVERE ones.

Wow, I might actually be able to get my dad to go to a movie theater if they make The Green Hornet.

Oh, and P.S. - Committed to Sparkle Motion. (http://foresthouse.livejournal.com/472998.html?thread=3479718#t3479718) Hee.

*sigh* 2008, you are really trying my patience here.

Next you'll know we'll be hearing about Bill Maher dying. If that happens, I don't know what I'll do. :(

I second the poster who said that Carlin needs to come back on Wednesday and do all of that.

[identity profile] glass-radical.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Bill Maher? Dude, knock on wood, honey. Knock on it.

That would be too much for me to take.

[identity profile] to-no-avail.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
2008 has sucked as far as death goes, both celebs and family members and friends.
Should we sprain Death's ankle?

I <3 the New Millenium. You know VH1 has lost all creativity when they're doing a decade show about a decade that has not finished yet. Yet I will watch this because I heart the previous ones. Hal Sparks FTW!

[identity profile] azuresquirrel.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
:( :( :(

I know people die every day for many reasons young and old, but this famous-person-death has me as down as Heath Ledger's.

[identity profile] flamingtoilet.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So long, George. Your soul will be stuck up on the roof forever, and not even Joe Pesci can get it down.

[identity profile] brittastic14.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
George Carlin just reminds me that no matter how big and famous you become, there is no escaping mortality.

Ironically, for a man with such a way with words, his death leaves me speechless.

[identity profile] r-a-black.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, my heart sank when I saw that headline on AOL. One of my closest friends is an immense fan of his and well.. ack, I hope she doesn't take it too badly.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am somewhat ashamed to say that, although it's hardly his greatest accomplishment, my first thought when I heard about George Carlin's death was 'Oh no, Mr. Conductor! (http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0098910/)' There is five-year-old in me that will never die.

I think the name Ashecliffe is more middle class striving to be Merchant Ivory. All the extra es they added to Ashcliff

[identity profile] chorusgirl.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to lie, I almost shed a tear for George.

[identity profile] batmaz.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I know there was something about Scarlett Johansson that I couldn't put my finger on... besides, you know, her "singing career"...

And I gotta hand it to him, that guy is pretty original, selling his whole life like that. It reminds me of the guy who swapped a red paperclip for a house. Except, you know, it's nothing like that at all.

And uhhhh I need people's help please? This is driving me crazy. What's the name of the film where there is an attempted assassination on the President's life, but it's shown as the same 20 minutes about 8 times over from different people's points of view? I want to see it but I can't remember the name.

And on a completely different topic - this Iron Man fanmix (http://community.livejournal.com/likefluffy/14542.html) has got me completely addicted to Imogen Heap's "Clear the Area." I seem to recall (maybe?) that you have the album with Goodnight and Go, which is the same one. I love those 2 songs, is the rest comparable? Might get it if so. :)

[identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm--I haven't really listened to all of it, because I suck. I can send it over, if you want.

Seth Rogen's Green Hornet Hype Begins With a Logo.

You mean of a bloated, ugly but stylized countenance under a pork pie hat?

[identity profile] princessstarr.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said this morning, when I heard about George Carlin, "NO! You can't take away Mr. Conductor, we still need him."

Very sad. : (

[identity profile] skyblade.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The Love Guru didn't make that much less than Epic Movie, it's just Epic Movie opened in a slow season, and with less direct comepetition. (It was dumb for the two movies to open the same weekend as each other, but Get Smart edged out with a more impressive cast and a brand name)

Part of me thinks the movie isn't sinking because America is for once showing good taste, but because nobody gives a crap about Mike Myers's spiritual trek-turned goofy movie. It'd be like Gwenyth Paltrow making a movie about macrobiotics.
