Box Office Report: ''Iron Man'' forges historic box office win; The Future of Iron Man: Alcoholic Tony Stark, War Machine, and Beyond.

If you had told me a year ago that we would kick off the summer movie season with Robert Downey Jr., Action Hero, I would not have believed you. I had a whole tangled paragraph that tried to be all deep about why this movie works, but it's late and my blood sugar is low, so: suffice it to say that RDJ pretty much is the movie, and does a fantastic job of keeping it light while also showing us a man driven to reverse a legacy of violence. Which is a deep and uppity way of saying that where once Tony Stark liked to blow shit up good, he now blows shit up for great justice. Good times.

(You know how everyone kept talking about how Cloverfield is A Monster Movie for Our Times, what with the 9/11 imagery and all? Iron Man is kind of a superhero movie For Our Times. Here we are in the last year of Bush's presidency, while his disapproval rating is at a record-breaking high and everyone is finally realizing, you know, the war over there is kind of a clusterfuck due to the machinations of old white men, and this character comes along and says, you know what? I contributed to this. I fed it and made it worse, and I profiteered. Good American soldiers and innocent civilians have died because of things I created. And you know what? I hate what I am and I've created, so I'm going to turn this around; I'm going to spend the rest of my life fixing my mistakes, or at the very least, atoning for them. So while we're sitting here at home feeling all conflicted about wanting to support our troops but wanting to get the hell out of this war that we kind of feel tricked into starting in the first place, Iron Man zooms over to the Middle East and blows up warlords and saves innocent people and then zooms home to deal with the biggest profiteer of all: his traitorous business partner, who has a remarkable talent for getting more and more evil every time he shows up onscreen. [The Dude! How could you?] Superheroes are an answer to something we feel anxious about as a society, I think, and I think that's part of the reason this movie is clicking with people. I mean, and also, it is awesome. But I think this is what people mean when they say something is "part of the zeitgeist"--its awesomeness blends seamlessly with the things that are already on people's minds.)

(Yeah, the original paragraph was even more tangled.)

I only had a couple of problems with the movie itself--for some reason, the final showdown just didn't seem to build to an effective climax, like Jon Favreau maybe doesn't quite know how to assemble an extended action sequence yet. It was just kind of... there, and I kept going, "Is this the end? Because it's kind of anticli... No, there's something else... is this it? No, wait..." I don't know, maybe I'd feel differently if I saw it again. That, and Terrence Howard was kind of useless. As my friend David pointed out, it's like, Rhodes will come to the rescue and put Tony's old heart back in! Oh, wait, Tony's got it under control. I know! Rhodes'll get in the prototype suit and... no, he'll just get in Tony's car and follow... no, he just goes to do army things. I know! He'll get in a plane and cover... no, he's just gonna tell everyone else to stay on the ground. Is there anything useful Rhodes is going to do? And the answer is... no, not really. On the other hand, Gwyneth Paltrow gets stuck with an unusually low amount of running and screaming in her role as The Girl, is largely un-annoying, and administers one of the great snaps of all time. I got slightly annoyed that the Tony/Pepper subplot went nowhere, but I guess they're saving that for the sequel. I mean on one hand, she's got a good point: he left her hanging, and she doesn't have to put up with that shit. On the other hand, he left her hanging because he found out that his partner was selling weapons to the enemy. He's hot, he's snarky, and he just saved the world; I vote we cut him some slack.

In conclusion: Would see again, will buy DVD.

Oh, and a word on the trailers: I was forced to endure The Love Guru, and yet THEY DID NOT SHOW THE NEW BATMAN TRAILER. WHAT? WHAT? WHAT IS THIS FUCKERY? I WANT AT LEAST TWO DOLLARS OF MY TICKET PRICE BACK. Oh, and we saw the Incredible Hulk trailer (which, unfortunately, has the same Villain Just Becomes a Bigger Version of the Hero schtick as Iron Man, only a day and a dollar too late), and after it was over, a small child behind us goes, "Didn't they already make that movie?" From the mouths of babes, y'all.

I have people coming into my theatre, seeing the poster for TIH and going "They're making another one"? to which I reply "They're making a better one" and they just roll their eyes and go "Well thank god!" haha...

Also, with the Dark Night trailer... it's weird how trailer placement works. We get a sheet each week that says what trailers go on what, and it's different from state to state. Did you get the new Indy 4 one? It's pretty great. And also, did you stick around after the credits for the extra scene? Oh man, that has me pumped!

*grin* I'm not even a big Indy fan and when the Raider's March started on the trailer I turned into the excited ten-year-old going "WOW! ADVENTURE!" That song is embedded in my DNA, just like the Super Mario music. (Which can, I discovered last year, alleviate the symptoms of malaria. TRUFAX.)

We got Batman and Caspian, but not the Hulk. I was satisfied, except that I too was forced to sit through the Love Guru.

I found the love story in Iron Man to be the best love story in an action flick ever. She wasn't useless, she wasn't panicky, it wasn't over done, it didn't overshadow the story, it was believable! I loved the entire movie. Except for how the hell did he survive that blast? What?

You are absolutely right about the current zeitgeist and this movie. I would say more but I need to sleep.

What it looked like me is that the force of the blast sort of knocked him upward and to the side and out of the way of the actual fiery blast business. I think.

Eh, I was less than dazzled by Iron Man, but it was fun. I did enjoy the world's guilt-trippiest news report, taking The News Is Pertinent To YOU PERSONALLY to a whole new level. Paltrow/Pepper Potts, however, was awful--Okay, actually, she was awesome for the first fifteen or so seconds after being introduced, and then she blew it by remaining in the movie.

But I bitch when instead I have a question. Can anyone tell me what was up with the stop motion shot of the prototype suit? What inspired that cinematic choice?

OH THANK GOD SOMEONE ELSE AGREES WITH ME ABOUT GWYNETH PALTROW.

I mean, she wasn't entirely bad. I liked her at the beginning of the movie, when she was basically in female Jeeves mode. She and RDJ did have some good chemistry when Pepper was helping switch out the electromagnets. But her others scenes with him...not so much. In my opinion, she was trying to force the sort of casual wit that came to RDJ naturally.

Hulk's movie villain is one of his classic comics villains. Don't ask me which one, mind you, because I just listen politely when my parents tell me these things, and they were never big Hulk fans either.

Parents are also hopeful for sequel dealing with Tony's alcoholism, and Rhodes getting to wear the red-and-gold suit. Apparently this also happened in the comics.

Comic/Hulk geek reporting in.

I got... like every single preview ever. Love Guru (ugh), Batman, Prince Caspian, Hulk, Indiana Jones... I mean, I knew the movie would live up to the trailers, but damn, I was starting to wonder what I'd done to deserve such trailer karma. :)

Anyway, excellent commentary; the only thing I'd add is Robert Downey Jr. could not have been a more perfect choice for the role. What with the drinking, womanizing, etc., it was like he was playing a superhero version of himself. I don't know if you ever saw (or linked) his interview in Parade Magazine, but he more-or-less says he went after the role because Keanu got the Matrix, and Depp got Pirates, and he wanted to be an action hero too. :)

At first I wondered if we didn't get the Batman trailer because Iron Man is made by Marvel Studios themselves and, you know, they might not want to promote DC stuff for their very first venture into filmmaking territory, but this whole theory died when I was told SOME theaters got it.

I saw it this morning and I still can't really think of anything really negative to say about it. I mean, it even has me liking a character played by Gwyneth Paltrow, of all things. The female character in a comic book movie actually gets to do stuff, and is useful? I loved the laptop scene, she's trying to bluff evil!Dude and you don't know if he's on to her or not until right after she's left. And on the whole, he was just genial genial genial and then he's executing people and screaming at scientists...

I liked that Pepper and Tony's relationship was kept to UST for this movie, I think it made a nice change from the OMG!drama that has sort of been so common in superhero flicks so far. It's clear that both the characters care a lot for each other, and it leaves something for the now inevitable sequel. But you're right in that I know I would not have been able to resist hot snarky genius man.

Who, I totally agree, Made the Movie. RDJ managed to be charismatic and funny, and yet at the same time played the character totally straight (in other words no wink-wink to the audience stuff). And even after his big change of heart he was still totally snarky, down to that last line.

And poor Rhodes. It's funny, but a blog on my RSS feed talked about some of the plot points in the novel adaptations that weren't in the film, and one of them was that instead of just admiring the armor suit, Rhodes actually tries it on...only to find that it doesn't fit.

(And on the superhero as a societal reaction, it's no coincidence that superhero comics became incredibly popular in WWII. But that wasn't the point where they eventually became the dominating genre of American comics, that happened during the fifties and sixties)

And finally, trailers. We got ripped off too. Caspian and Indiana Jones yes, the (ugh) Guru (tell me that wasn't Ben Kingsley in there. I know his standards aren't exactly high these days, but good god man!) but no Dark Knight. Maybe if I go see it in the IMAX? Also, The Happening, which looks interesting, but the trailer is pretty poorly done.

So I went to an AMC theater in Norwalk (I don't like AMC theaters) to rejoin two friends already there. We got okay seats in a big stadium-style screening room, and proceeded to be bombarded by a bazillion commercials, just like watching TV.
FUCK YOU AMC!!
My local TV theaters are a Pacific and a Bridge Cinéma Deluxe, and they show maybe 2 commercials before showing trailers. I like 'em lots.
Anyway, after all the TV ads, we eventually got some trailers of films I'm not planning to see, except Indy, Batman, and The Hulk.
I mean, "Love Guru"? Welcome to Mike Myers Midget Abuse!
FUCK YOU MIKE MYERS!!
And that M. Night Shamalamadingdong trailer was pretty limp and dumb.
Anyway, "Iron Man started up and golly, I LOVED IT!!
IT WAS AWESOME! IT WAS INSANELY GREAT AND MADE OF WIN!
And wow, remember when Flynn had hair and wrote too many tank programs?

I have to agree with the For Our Times sentiment, and I think it also works on a pseudoscience level in that we relate to it and it's not just Oh Hey Aliens Come to Rescue Us. (I'm not a big fan of Superman or anything in that vein, but Ironman and Batman YES PLZ)

Also, I think Rhodes' role worked for me in that Stark doesn't have everything under control (his relationships with his friends, and obviously the miliary), but maybe I juet geeked out over the Air Force a little too much. ;) w00t w00t Wright Brothers

Also, I'd have to say I really enjoyed Pepper's character. She helped Stark in the end and quite honestly I'm sick of movies that have romance subplots just so they can fall in love at the end. I think the flirting was just enough to hint that it could develop more real-time (yeah, right, over two movies instead of one) but not take over for the main plot.

Also what did you think of the new Indy IV trailer?! =D That was the main reason I went to see Iron Man, I won't lie. =P

I loved Iron Man, largely because of the snarkiness.

And off topic, but I was sent this yesterday and immediately loved it. I thought you might enjoy it and might be able to use if for one of your links posts.

Would also see again, and it's an automatic DVD buy. Looking forward to more Marvel Studios productions, because Avengers will be completely made of win.

Are we going to get an Iron Man in 15 Minutes?
