Awww, Markéta Irglová didn't get to say anything, so Jon Stewart actually brings her back out to give her own acceptance speech, which is really awesome and sweet, but really, really funny in light of the "SO ARROGANT!" comment about Hansard. Also, Stewart says that Hansard apparently wanted their Oscars to kiss backstage, to which Irglová replied, "But... they're both men," and Hansard said, "But this is Hollywood!"

Here's Cameron Diaz to trip over the word "cinematography." "I can do this," she sasses, hand on hip. Heh. Robert Elswit wins for There Will Be Blood. Ooo, he also did Good Night and Good Luck; I was really impressed with the way he used pipe tobacco smoke (according to David Strathairn) instead of normal cigarettes in that one. Elswit says "it really belongs to Paul [Thomas Anderson]," but that they are also "standing on the shoulders of Daniel Day-Lewis." Which is sweet.

Ohhhhhh Lord, here's Hilary Swank. Break out your hankies, it's the Annual Death March of Deathly Death. Also: DON'T CLAP. A caption onscreen notes that the memorial includes those who died between February 1, 2007 and January 31, 2008. The montage includes (as many names as I could grab, certainly not all): Roscoe Lee Brown, Barry Nelson, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Betty Hutton, Calvin Lockhart, Jane Wyman, Jack Valenti, Michael Kidd, Michelangelo Antonioni, Delbert Mann, Monty G. Westmore, Bud Ekins, Bernard Gordon, Dabbs Greer, Harold Michelson, Laraine Day, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Lois Maxwell, Laszlo Kovacs, Robert Clark, George Jenkins, Johnny Grant, Donfeld, Sembene Ousmane, Miyoshi Umeki, Suzanne Pleshette, Deborah Kerr, Peter Ellenshaw, Peter Zinner, Freddie Francis, Ingmar Bergman, Ray Evans, William Tuttle, and, of course, Heath Ledger. (Sister Girl called me specifically to bitch that "that was the most anticlimactic thing ever.") Interesting omission: Brad Renfro, who passed away before Ledger. Not quite sure what was up with that.

Commercials! But no time to hit post! Here's Amy Adams (IN BLACK! Wait, no, it's still the dark green) to the orchestral strains of "Happy Working Song." Here, let us play famous musical cues! The writers really didn't have much time, did they? Best Original Score, for which I am studiously not cheering! YAY DARIO MARIANELLI! Although I also would have been very happy with Michael Giacchino (pssst! When is the Monster Opera going to be released for download?!). Aww, Saoirse Ronan and James McAvoy are sitting together. I have heard, by the way, that Keira Knightley--with no presenting duties this year--decided to stay home and watch in her pajamas like the rest of us. Anyway! Yay Dario Marianelli! I love his scores for both V for Vendetta and Pride and Prejudice. Good times.

Here's Tom Hanks with God knows what. Oh wow, live video from Baghdad. "We watch a ton of movies over here and we love 'em all." Awww, the soldiers are reading the list of nominees for Documentary Short! Holy crow, they even read the winner--how did Price Waterhouse manage that? Do they have, like, two accountants in camo over in Iraq? The winner (for "Freeheld") is sobbing. (Plot summary, since her speech made me curious: "Lieutenant Laurel Hester is dying. All she wants to do is leave her pension benefits to her life partner - Stacie.")

Tom Hanks again, this time with Documentary Feature. They are all very grim--Hanks gets to the line "a lifeline of hope," adding, "Finally, hope." Winner: Taxi to the Dark Side. Yes, over Sicko. Which I'm perfectly fine with. I'm just saying.

Coming up: Best Actor, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. There's a part of me that wonders if they left screenplay so late because Juno will probably win, and Juno--actually the highest-grossing Best Picture nominee this year--may be the Oscars' hope of holding on to a younger demographic. I really am too cynical, aren't I?

"Interesting omission: Brad Renfro, who passed away before Ledger. Not quite sure what was up with that."

The montage only shows Academy members; I'm guessing Renfro wasn't one.

That was so AWESOME.

-- holy shit they really ARE zipping through the show. The host was cut off at the _beginning_ of introducing Harrison Ford....

I'm already all kinds of sad over Ledger still, but I had no idea Umeki died!

I didn't get the whole "so arrogant" thing - he's so not - maybe that's the point?

As for Brad Renfro - I don't think he was a member of the Academy - I think the Death Roll Call is for Academy Members. I was wondering if Heath would be in it since he died in '08, or if they'd save him for next year. I'm glad he was in this one.

I think everyone would have been going "WTF??" if Heath had been left for next year.

Totally - that's why I was wondering what they'd do!!

Yeah, I think the deal with the "arrogant" bit was maybe that it was going around that he was, so Hansard makes a nice speech and Jon Stewart goes out there and says, "Gah, he's SO ARROGANT! No, seriously, that was really sweet." I really think he was being sarcastic.

I don't think there were any rumours going around. I think Jon's comment was just in reaction to what was a very humble speech by Glen, spoken with complete awe about the whole thing: thanking the academy for taking them seriously, wondering how the hell they got there etc.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by Diablo Cody's reaction. She seemed REALLY nervous, and genuinely touched that she won. Her mention of her family was very sweet too.

Oh, wow, I knew Dario Marianelli did Atonement and P&P, but he also did V for Vendetta? He just went waaaay up on my list of top composers. ♥ So happy about that win!!

I thought that it was smart of them to have Heath Ledger last, since he was clearly going to get the most applause, and this way it was like it was partially applause for all of them (even though we all knew it wasn't). This way, I think it didn't seem quite as much of a "We all clapped more for Heath than anyone else!" kind of thing.

I liked the troops doing the best short documentary, especially as the winner was pro-gay-marriage or at least gay-partnerships! Also the bit about Taxi to the Dark Side's director, who's dad was a military interrogator and wanted him to make the movie.

I laughed at the "SO ARROGANT" thing, mostly because it would seem that based on various reports, Glen and Marketa are really nice people, almost to the point of being SUPER!nice. I'm glad that they beat the Disney machine.

SO glad they beat the Disney machine. I was crossing my fingers and toes for Falling Slowly (although I would have been happy with the August Rush song too, but I've owned the Once soundtrack since before I saw the movie!)

When I made a similar crack about how PWC got a briefcase to Iraq, Husband just looked up from his newspaper to note that the troops in Iraq taped each of the nominees as winners, and then they played the only the actual one in the show.
