Hmm. Oscars in less than twelve hours. You know, it's weird--I'm trying to figure out how to phrase this exactly, but... it's kind of like I don't care all that much this year. I mean, I care. I'm looking forward to the show and the clothes and Jon Stewart. It's just that I honestly have very little idea--beyond the obvious categories--who's going to win anything, and moreover, I'm just not interested enough to read up and find out who the frontrunners in the minor categories are. I honestly feel pretty indifferent about the notion of any particular person winning. It's kind of relaxing, actually. Like I can just put on the formal pajamas and stock up on Mountain Dew and limber up my fingers and not worry about anything. Nothing's at stake for me, as a viewer, at all this year.

As such, this is the first year I have no predictions of any kind as to who will win anything. None. Last I heard, it was probably going to go to No Country for Old Men, but it might go to There Will Be Blood, or even Juno might sneak in if those two split the Serious Masterpiece vote. I'm to the point where's basically like, who's not going to win? I can tell you that. People not named Daniel Day-Lewis or Javier Bardem. Anyone involved in Juno except Diablo Cody. Please, God, please, not Norbit. Other than that, I either can't imagine or don't care (even the costume category is loaded with good choices), and, like I said, it's far more enjoyable than years I spent cursing out the TV at quarter till midnight. Hell, Michael Clayton could sweep and I'd be like, "Huh. Fancy that. Go Tilda." I mean, I'd be a bit nonplussed, but I could watch the fireworks online for a little while and then go sleep the sleep of the possibly-not-sleeping-at-all, depending on how much Mountain Dew I drank during the show. Mmm, Dew.

Anyway. We're having a belated birthday lunch for my mother and aunt today, and in addition to that, I've had connectivity problems for the last couple of days. I'd like to watch the red carpet this year--which I usually don't do--so that maybe I can go ahead and save myself some fashion-related flailing during the ceremony ("She's wearing a blue--green?--thing that--I don't know--I can't see!"), but you may not see me until the stroke of 7:30 pm CST. If I can't liveblog at all, for whatever odd reason, I'll post a recap tomorrow. And before you start fussing about that, I did it before and it turned out fine.

If you've never read one of my liveblogs before, here's last year's. I read over it last night, and it holds up pretty well a year later. Which is to say, my theory of liveblogging is that someone without a television should be able to follow what I'm saying. This is also why I'm so wrung out afterwards--a good bit of work goes into making the thing coherent. Please bear this in mind if you are a media corporation looking to hire someone for next year--will write for food; internet slang completely optional.

Truthfully, that's how I feel about the Oscars and all the other awards shows, pretty much always. I generally don't have a favorite, and I'm there for the clothes and any WTF that might possibly happen. Oh, and other snarkers being snarky about those things. And your recaps (concurcaps?).

i feel the same way. i think it could have something to do with the damn Writer's Strike b/c we didn't have The Golden Globes which kicks it all off so everything else just falls flat. i'm not too interested in the people in the catagories either!

I pretty much feel the same way about the oscars this year. It doesn't help that I'm sick though - that's definitely adding to the ambivalence.

The only two categories I really feel strongly about are Best Animated (Ratatouille) and Best Score (Atonement).

This worked for me last year!

I have my semi-formal robe ready for tonight and a root beer. Go, Cleo! Go, Cleo!

I'm not biting my nails, but mostly because four out of any five nominees are genuinely good and would deserve their awards. 2007 has been the best year for movies in quite some time, and with a few exceptions, very little excellence got left out in the cold. (Alas, Zodiac)

Of course, if the Acadey voters are worried they're too obscure for the public this year, throwing award after award at Juno would be the best remedy for that. So the question is, do we want the remedy?

*is happy she finally has you on her f-list so she can follow you more religiously* Er, I'm not a stalker though...

Moving on to the post at hand! I look forward to whatever wit you will bestow upon us - whether it's live and immediate or done tomorrow.

And yes, I have no strong stake in anything this year either. Which may be a good thing. That means I won't revert to atavism (sorry, I have a Criminology midterm and am trying to utilize all important terms as much as possible) and light trash cans on fire whilst screaming down the streets in rage if my heart is broken by someone/something's loss.

Love ya lots, doll. All the best!

Oh, please, great gods in our midst, not Diablo Cody for like anything at all, please.

Please.

I will offer a goat.

I don't care what colour goat. I will offer the goat, even if I need to dye it first.

Within reason, mind. SFX dye's pricey.

OH SWEET LORD THANK YOU. I could never look at her with an ounce of respect after - and I quote - "I wasn't molested as a child because I wasn't pretty enough." I'm surprised that she's able to breathe the same air as the rest of us...

I will chip in for aforementioned goat.

I for one would just like to say thank you for liveblogging them. I've never been super into the Oscars, but I do like to know what happened and your blog is the perfect way to do that (with that oh so subtle Cleo humor in there as well).

So..thank you!

I apologize if this comment is awkward sounding. I just woke up and my brain refuses to function properly.

Yeah, this is the first year in a long time for me, too, where I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen. Should be interesting! I'll be too busy playing hostess & watching for liveblogging, but I do hope to carry on with my Monday morning ritual of reading everyone else's liveblogs. :)

Finally, I made my Oscar predictions in this post (http://moviemaiden.livejournal.com/6011.html?mode=reply), on my movie blog. (Hey, I still have two and a half hours to go!) I've seen all the best picture nominees, though I didn't see a few other movies that I wanted to/should have, like I'm Not There, 3:10 to Yuma, Away From Her, La Vie En Rose, or The Assassination of Jesse James. I'm liking No Country for Old Men. It was my favorite of the five top nominees. Atonement was nothing special, except for the actress who played the younger sister. I felt There Will Be Blood had glaring problems, despite my on-going love affair with anything Paul Thomas Anderson does (making me predisposed to really want to like the movie). And although Juno and Michael Clayton were good, they weren't Best-Picture-Type good.

I really only started seeing the oscar nominees in the last 2 months. I've seen maybe 20 movies this year, which is actually pretty light for me! I've seen all the best picture nominees every year for the last 5 years or so, except for last year, when I only saw, like, two.

I know everyone's pretty much said this already, but your liveblogging = WIN.
I couldn't care less about all the actual awards either, but I always like hanging around these parts on award show nights. So, uh, thanks!! :)

I was hoping you'd liveblog again this year as I can't see it on tv. And I love your writing. So through you I can at least feel like I'm 'watching' in a way. Thanks.

It's strange, really. For the past 4 or 5 years, I've always watched the whole show and been really into it. This year, though, I don't really care. The only thing I'd like to see win is Juno, but I am so apathetic that I don't even care if it doesn't. It's best picture in my mind, though.
