Did you used to do blogging for the Globes or was that just the Oscars? Regardless, I miss it. :-[

Generally I did both, although at least one year I think I wrote up the Oscars the day after. I think this year the whole Globes thing was only half an hour, and no one attended, so... not much to talk about. : (

Oh GOOD the Eddie Vedder song won! And Cate Blanchett. These don't seem too bad. I'm glad There Will Be Blood won something.

Best Musical/Comedy: Sweeney Todd

Huh?

Cate Blanchett FTW.

But seriously, if Atonement wins the Oscar I'm going to lose a lot of faith in the system. Considering that I have no faith, that's either quite a statement or none at all. I mean, I haven't seen No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood yet, but basically all that Atonement has going for it are pretty costumes, pretty people, and a really long tracking shot. Of D-Day. It, not surprisingly, was also pretty. Somehow.

And, to be fair, James McAvoy, who in addition to prettiness had actual depth, and talent, and - dare I say? - a tiny hint of grit. Other than that... not so much.

Also, I cannot express how entertained I am that Julian Schnabel won director. I haven't seen that one yet, either (god damn it, they all need to come nearer to me!), but I always love it when somebody comes out of the blue like that. (As long as s/he's deserving, obviously, which by all accounts he is.)

Hey - I laughed a LOT!

there were sly bit of humour peppered throughout the entire film.

*Rickman sentencing the little kid to hang

*Cohen getting beaten over the head with a teapot!

*Cohen's little assistant being abused by Cohen...

it was a laugh riot. OK, maybe not, but I thought it was very funny. Not to mention the / (slash) means both musicals and comedies. xD

LOL JULIAN SCHNABEL.

It was on for an hour, but yeah.

The Entertainment Tonight format amused me to no end, especially a) dude's hair b) because I never thought I'd hear ET-alikes discuss Julian Schnaebel in the same tone of voice as Johnny Depp and c) the whole dramatic impact progression was completely and utterly lost.

YAY FOR MARION!

I've been predicting an Oscar win for her since July. Her performance was the most amazing female performance I've seen in a while.

I actually don't think Atonement is going to win the Oscar. I really don't. While it was very good, I think it's incredibly clear that both No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood are both far superior films. The Hollywood Foreign Press were on something when they did that vote.

I'm thinking that something is "continental pride". I'm noticing how the more eurocentric Sweeney Todd also did well, when neither is even a relaiable alternate for best picture predictions, and I think this has to do with the divide between American subject matter, and subject matter that's a little more global. I've been noticing it for a while--it's largely reflected in this year's box office, with movies like The Golden Compass, and that the year's highest grossing movie is worldwide is fourth domestically.

No Country has been cleaning up elsewhere, but I think its early peaking, and that it's very similar in a lot of ways to There Will be Blood, could mean mean Juno snatches it up at the last minute.

Hmm, that's very interesting... makes a lot of sense.

I'd also be kind of disappointed if Juno wins. I enjoyed it, but I just didn't think it was stellar, although everybody I know seems to disagree with me.

God, I love Oscar season. :P

Rickman sentencing the little kid to hang

That scene pissed me off. It was like the filmmakers didn't think that Turpin was despicable enough, so they threw in a scene of him sentencing a crying child to hang. Putting aside the fact that things like that were normal at the time, it just felt like the director was going, "See? See? He's evil! Evil, I say! You should hate him! SEE?!?"

The thing is, the HFPA has a huge famewhore streak--you can almost look at a given category, pick the glossiest or most famous to win, and be right. Atonement in that context doesn't surprise me at all, and Sweeney Todd's at a weird advantage in a category with comedies, because it comes off as having a lot more weight. The only win that really surprised me was Julian Schnabel, because it was a lot of deserving-it against a very low amount of star power.

I think it's "Things Wot Aren't Dramas" more so than "Things Wot Are Like One Another." Personally, I agree wholeheartedly with separating dramas from comedies, but I think musicals should be sorted into whichever of those two categories they belong. I imagine the current system is a holdover from a time when most musicals *were* comedies.
