Some anonymous donor came and rescued Erin. (ETA: Followup.) As far as I'm concerned, Project Download accomplished what it was intended to accomplish, and MegaUpload grinching out may have served its cosmic purpose after all.

ETA 2: Aaaaaand here's the owner of MegaUpload, "a German self-proclaimed hacker and businessman who has generated much publicity and has been convicted of computer fraud, insider trading and embezzlement."

(SendSpace.com: Not Operated By Convicted Hacker-Embezzlers Since Ever So Far As I Know.)

Third-ed(?). I'll toss in a yummy dinner in either Tehachapi or OC in CA.

LoL Sweet- actually that mostly even applies to anyone from the M15M/Cleolinda fandom... if you find yourself in the Reno/Sparks area you're invited over for a beer... so I supposed I'd have to make a cheese cake or something too.

Tehachapi! My family and I stayed there for a night on our 3-week roadtrip through America.
Totally off-topic, but hey.

Good news for Erin, very glad to hear it. If MegaUpload's going to be a buncha tools, at least they get used for some good.

And if we ever figure out who her donor is, I say we insure they never have to buy their own drinks again.

I'm so glad she has that money to help her out.

Although, to be totally, utterly frank, I'd still like to see her take MegaUpload to court for not paying up.

I'd understand her not wanting to bother now, of course. My desire to hold MU accountable does not outweigh her needs to rest physically and mentally or to get on with more hopeful things in life.

Not being a member of the LJ community or friended on her page, I'm somewhat confused about the whole "Nancy Drew" issue.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
I think that's referring to someone who "helpfully" called Erin's primary doctor, as listed on Erin's web page. I don't know exactly what the caller said--Erin might, I'm not sure about that either. Something about wanting personal information? Most likely to try to prove/disprove Erin's illness--but whatever it was upset the primary doctor (who for some reason didn't want to be known as such) so much that she got Erin's financial assistance from that hospital group dropped. On the other hand, I'm not sure--where is the Nancy Drew reference?

Oh, that one--I never knew what that was about, actually, except that "Nancy Drew" may or may not have also been the doctor-caller. I always wondered about that episode, actually.

Ok, according to his Wikipedia page the guy is a recidivist asshole. How is he not getting harsher sentencing? How many times can you get away with nothing worse than probation for fraud and embezzlement? Wtf, Germany?

We're sorry! We really are! :-( And I'm still a little shocked that he is the one behind MegaUpload. He was present in the media a lot, 3 years or so ago, and then just disappeared.

But anyway: YAY! for Erin and just another offer of free drinks for Ms./Mr. Anonymus - you're one of the good guys! :-)

Ah, you know the name? (What I love about MU, in the ironic sense, is that it's got those captcha letters you have to enter to prove you're not a bot before you download anything. You know, so you don't defraud Schmitz somehow.)

From: [identity profile] trailer-spot.livejournal.com
I can only confirm what you can read on the wikipedia entry (though I didn't know everything). He turned up in the media several times around the turn of the century. Mainly by doing publicity stunts that the media picked up. Everybody with a little bit of knowledge of human nature could see that he's a poser and liar. But you know how the media works. But he overdid it and he even got convicted of a couple of things which is nice.

I had no idea what he's doing now and even though it is somewhat plausible that he's involved in megaupload (especially if it's incorporated "overseas") I would like to get some "official" confirmation before I believe it (not that I really care). I mean, would you like to do business with someone like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix16xiwZrqM). :)

As for the "captcha letters" letters. By now more or less everybody does it. And I can understand why they are doing it. I don't mind to jump through a few hoops to have access to those files but then I want a fast download which in my experience is rarely the case with megaupload. I personally use rapidshare when it comes to file sizes that are tens of MBs large since they almost always offer excellent download speed even though they often have long waiting periods until the download starts.
