Not much tonight--since I got up with Sister Girl and her flu last night, I didn't get a lot of sleep, and I sat downstairs with her today as well. The doctor's got her on a few things to help the symptoms (I'm not sure--can you actually treat the flu itself? Is it viral? Whatever he's got her on, I trust him), and her legs have stopped hurting. (Yes, apparently it's that flu.) My mother's exhausted from also sitting up with Sister Girl and holding a cold compress to her head, and then trying to coordinate tomorrow's office Christmas luncheon, so we're both going to try to go to bed ASAP.

That said, I posted the third part of the Golden Compass earlier today at [livejournal.com profile] m15m (I should have said something earlier, actually). Enjoy--just send me good not-getting-flu thoughts.

Augh. Poor thing. Here's hoping you stay relatively untainted, and that Sister Girl recuperates quickly.

How could you have neglected to mention part 3 earlier?? As if there's anything more important than m15m! Sisters? Pshaw.

J/k. BE WELL!

Yeah, the flu's a virus. But hey, at least you can treat the symptoms. Yay painkillers and fever reducers! AND WASH YOUR HANDS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Yeah, we have this "Kitchen Fresh Hands" lemon-scented Softsoap that I love to death. Two dispensers of it, one upstairs and one down, actually. So I'm getting in plenty of hand-washing.

And "haha 'lamesauce' is an awesome word, the 15 minutes just keep getting better!" happy type thoughts.

That's the worst flu, the legs-hurting bit. I didn't get a chance to comment on your last entry, esp. before the ETA, but as soon as I read hurting legs, I thought: OH NO! Death flu! So I'm glad that's getting observed by a medical professional now.

I didn't even know that kind of flu, the "oh-god-I-can't-sleep-legs-hurt-too-much" flu even existed before 2005, when I got it and thought I might actually die. Now I get it every year, because now I'm old.

flu legs hurt? wha?

Yep, the flu is viral, but there are things out there that can treat it with some success (we studied two such drugs in OChem last semester - they're quite cool). If it's either of the things we studied, and they are taken really soon after the first symptoms show up, they are supposed to do a pretty good job of both slowing down the flu *and* halting its spread to others.

Again, I wish your sister a speedy recovery and I hope none of the rest of you get sick! (And happy early birthday!)

Aww. I hope Sister Girl gets well soon. And good luck not catching it. It would suck tremendously to be sick on your birthday.

Speaking of which: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The flu is a virus. Tamiflu is a drug that can treat it - works pretty well. Other than that, drink lots of liguids & get plenty of rest. My vet recommends taking Vit C to fend off colds (I suppose I could ask a human doctor about that one, but it seems to work)

Thanks for the m15m - I'm lovin' it!

Yeah, I know she's on Tamiflu for sure. (Glad you enjoyed it!)

That should take care of it then, hopefully pretty quickly!

I think someone already mentioned hand-washing - but it does bear repeating, hand-washing is key to infection control.

Stay well!

The only thing I've found to help (with me) to avoid getting the flu is to drink a shitload of fluids. Obviously, hand washing and vitamin C and all that too, but drinking more than the standard eight glasses of water really seems to do it. I don't know, maybe you just pee the flu right out?
Just make sure it's not all water...should be a mix of OJ, tea, maybe chicken broth or vegetable stock. I get in nine glasses of fluid a day two days straight, sorts me right out.
Just never be too far from a bathroom.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

It is now 5am EST, December 14th, and I deem it entirely appropriate to bring on the birthday wishes to ya! I also have good not-getting-flu thoughts coming out of my EARS (o_O) that I'm sending to you as well. Here's hoping you stay well on your birthday, and take it easy today, if that's entirely possible! I'm also sending well wishes to Sister Girl as well. Hope she recovers soon. :)

No flu!

Have you and the rest of your family had your flu vaccinations? My mother is a nurse, and she is constantly telling me about this or that vaccine that I need to have (guess she's got a point), so I get the FluVax every year. Considering my immune system is shot to hell, it's probably a good thing.

(Bad point about your mother being a nurse? She woke me up on Tuesday morning, saying "Okay, give me your arm, I'm taking your blood for blood tests".)

Thank you very much for writing this parody. I will send it to my boyfriend now, who has read the first 1 1/2 books and we watched the film together last week. I wonder if he knows about the atheism-preaching stuff ;-)

Anyway, wanted to let you know that in the german synchronization they let Ragnar Sturlusson be Iofur Raknison. Okay, I don't remember about the last name, but I definitely remember him being called 'Iofur'.
So, for once they did something right in dubbing ;-)

[pharmacist butting in]

Haven't read the other comments so I don't know whether your question has been addressed already.

Both the flu and the common cold are viral in origin and usually the only treatment given is to treat the symptoms. The immune system, in the meantime, clears out the infection on its own. In cases where the Influenza virus is giving a lot of trouble there ARE antiviral medications but they're ridiculously overpriced, so you need a damn good reason to justify the expense. Otherwise, a lot of bed rest will do the trick just fine.

Hope Sister Girl gets better soon.

okay I just read the other comments and see that your sister is on Tamiflu (that's the antiviral that will actually treat the infection), so nothing to worry about there :)

Out of curiousity, how expensive is Tamiflu in the US? Compared to other drugs here (in Malta) it is quite pricey.
