Part one of The Golden Compass in Fifteen Minutes is up.

Also, someone made a request for my LJ password. The email came to me, of course, but... uh. I'm just going to assume they typed their email in wrong. But if that's not what happened? I'M ON TO YOU, SPARKY.

Ah, okay, just wasn't sure. :D

Haven't read the series so I'm not sure if Robert is a good fit.

On the subject of Project Download, I wanted to submit these to a few popular blogs like boingboing, but then I read her FAQ entry about "contacting the media" and now I'm not so sure. I mean, based on how internet fads have spread in the past, I don't think she's ever going to reach 5 million unless more people outside of a small LJ community hear about it, but I don't know if doing so would violate her wishes and/or cause more harm than good.

Gah, I don't know.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Well, I think by media she meant, like, TV news stations/sites. I did submit the link to Boing Boing, but it wasn't used. I thought about Fark, but--I'm not sure I want to invite the potential cruelty involved; apparently a link on DeviantArt caused Erin a lot of grief a while back. I do think we need to hit some big blogs, though, and Neil Gaiman and Wil Wheaton have both mentioned it. I'm actually hoping that the Golden Compass thing means that the link will filter out to some His Dark Materials fansites/boards/comms, which would mean we'd get an entirely new set of people. And it's the reason I originally wanted to do another Harry Potter parody, and if I can dig one up out of the comedy mines, I'll post it ASAP.

Someone requested my lj password too the other day. It's really nervewracking.

Date: 2007-12-12 02:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Seriously. I can't figure out how you'd benefit by doing that, because... it doesn't go to you, you know? Unless you think you can hack the email. Which makes me SUPER NERVOUS just thinking about it.

Date: 2007-12-12 04:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] callie-girl.livejournal.com
I'm one of those people who still have the "You should change your password!!1" lj messages when I post, so my first thought was that someone was trying to hack me.

I guess one protection is to use a non-available-to-the-public email for lj purposes (if you're not doing that already) and hope they won't know what account to hack?

Date: 2007-12-12 04:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think I have my email listed as "cleolinda at livejournal.com," which is, of course, a redirect to an actual address. Maybe that'll protect me.

someone requested my lj password yesterday (once), and today (4 times). I don't like that at all.

Date: 2007-12-12 04:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Okay, what's going on with everyone getting password-requested all at once?

Date: 2007-12-12 03:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] all-shine-on.livejournal.com
Be really careful with the password requests. I've been hacked 3 times this year, maliciously and personally. I've had entries deleted, my layout deleted, porn posted to every community I'm in, and every community I monitor deleted. And they hacked right into my LJ. Change your password on everything and make it long and complicated.

Date: 2007-12-12 03:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
How did they do it, do you know?

Date: 2007-12-12 04:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] all-shine-on.livejournal.com
No clue. I know he did it twice within one week, but after the first hack, I wiped my hard drive clean, reaload everything and he did it again within days. He hacked LJ to access my account (though I've no idea how) then reset my LJ email to his and then went crazy.

The more horrible part was that LJ never did anything to help. They didn't suspend his account (though I know what it is), wouldn't give me any information to send to anyone who could help legally and said I had no proof that I wasn't posting it myself because they couldn't do anything with his IP. It was really disappointing to have so little support from them.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
At the same time, I kind of see where they're coming from--what if he'd gone to them and said you stole the account, so please unlock it for him? I checked the FAQ, and it did say that pretty much the only way to safeguard your LJ is to protect the related email address, which is still scary. It sucks all around, really.

*wants*

I've been trying to download part 1 for the past fifteen minutes, and no luck. Any chance of a secondary link?

I was also wondering, how many downloads is Erin up to now? I've been curious, since the Project Download link goes straight to the download instead of the listing which says how many downloads so far.

Date: 2007-12-12 04:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vwlphb.livejournal.com
Nevermind! It let me download.

I'm still curious about the number of downloads though :)

Date: 2007-12-12 05:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Yays! I answered the download thing in the other comment, btw. Also, the entry itself got metaquoted shortly after she told me that, which is fantastic--that ought to bring in a whole different set of people. I'm hoping some HDM fansites or boards will link to it as well--I've gotten tons of traffic from Harry Potter and Phantom boards in the past, for example--which could bring in a whole new crop of potentially non-LJ people.

I would be surprised if it didn't get passed around a lot. I'll post it in my journal to try to spread it to my real life friends, who are likely to pass it along as well.

Yeah, and the listing on her site hasn't been updated since November. [livejournal.com profile] mistress_mab told me it surged up to 180,000 within minutes of the Fifteen Minutes posting, though--also, apparently MegaUpload is doing double points as a Christmas bonus thing, so that's really going to help.

Have you had any luck with it yet?

This makes me sad. From Terry Pratchett here (http://www.paulkidby.com/news/index.html):

I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news. I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of early onset Alzheimer's, which lay behind this year's phantom "stroke".

We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism. For now work is continuing on the completion of Nation and the basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals. All other things being equal, I expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers. Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet :o)

PS I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should be interpreted as 'I am not dead'. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think - it's too soon to tell. I know it's a very human thing to say "Is there anything I can do", but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry.

I know--I was holding on until the NA convention organizers were ready to put up their announcement as well (short version: they're going ahead with it, and they're hoping he'll be well enough to come, but it'll be a celebration of his work regardless).

Ahhh ok. Well, either way that convention sounds like it'll be an awesome thing.
