Not posting much tonight--my right hand is aching for some reason, the muscles or tendons or something between my thumb and forefinger. Probably strained it from overuse at the computer--took advantage of the weekend to do some more research. So, kind of hurts; giving substantial posting a day off or so.

However, the world is still busily discussing the Great Dumbledore Outing of 2007 ("Outing gives Potter passages new meaning"), and also, there are icons, because it didn't happen if you didn't make icons. First two of mine, below: text from littlest_lurker. Second two: text from kaesa, based on a previous set of FW icons I'd made.

Oh, I should note: "I love my dead gay son" is a line from Heathers; the last two pictures in the fourth icon are the Weather Girls and this illustration, respectively. Also, don't ever Google Image Search "raining men." "Wait, those aren't men! Oh... 'Thai ladyboys.' "

And to finish, from [livejournal.com profile] callmecaito: "I'm going back and compiling Dumbledore quotes, and rewriting them so that he outs himself! Because his gayness is really that important, he really should have worked it into all his discussions, really." Example: At that moment, Harry fully understood for the first time why people said Dumbledore was the only wizard Voldemort had ever feared. Voldemort... was homophobic.

With a warning like that, you know what I had to do. I have to say, the pic of the Thai ladyboys? Disappointingly small.

I didn't actually click on it, or I would have warned you that it wasn't worth the trip. What I love is that I had SafeSearch on at the time.

Item one: The icons are LULZ
Item two: I could never get tired of Dumblegay. Especially now that it's being called Dumblegay
Item three: my right hand is aching for some reason. I'm sorry, but when I read that, the 13 year old boy in me had a good rofl.

That reminds me of when I went on a misguided search for a pic of Rainbow Brite's old pal, Twink. Yeah. I google image searched "twink". Needless to say, I did not find any pics of R. B.'s white sprite sidekick.

See, in response to people who are upset that she didn't out him in canon, I say only this: how many single elderly men go around waving their romantic lives in people's faces, straight OR gay? Especially a man as private as Dumbledore. Nobody knew he and Gellert had a thing--even if they did (nowhere does it say Gellert reciprocated), it was a very brief summer thing that took place away from everyone but family. It just doesn't tax the mind too much to believe that something like realistically would stay under wraps, not because Alboos was ashamed but because it hurt too much to bring up and he was a fairly private person, as we see throughout the series.

JKR saying it in an interview doesn't make it canon, but canon supports what she said in the interview.

Also, canon supports Sirius being gay too. Just saying.

Worth linking: I like Neil Gaiman's thoughts about the Dumbledore thing (http://www.neilgaiman.com/journal/2007/10/flowers-of-romance.html).

As someone else said somewhere, the only passage the outing *really* redefines is the purple suit in HBP. Because now it makes sense. He obviously just got back from a visit to San Fransisco.

And it annoys me (in the most mild way that something can be annoying) that so many people seem to be automatically assuming that they did have a thing. To me, the whole situation reads more like nothing ever happened between them, and Dumbledore probably never even confessed his attraction.

I personally like the people saying that she only outed him for attention and to sell more books (in other words, for the money). Hello? She was asked. What was she supposed to do, lie? Or maybe she slipped the fan a tenner and prompted them to ask about Dumbledore's love life.
Or perhaps they're suggesting she made him gay in the first place for the attention. Maybe these people just aren't writers, but when writing, you don't always have complete control over your characters' personalities. Some things just sort of develop on their own, and you let them, because they work.

Another annoyance are the offended parties ranting that sexuality, be it homo or hetero, (and yes, they always specify 'or hetero' in a thinly veiled effort to hide their own homophobia) has no place in childrens books, despite that Dumbledore's sexuality isn't even alluded to in the books. If the heterosexuality had bothered them, why weren't they complaining about all of the snogging going on in HBP?

Yeah...it reads that way to me too. Of course, nothing wrong with a little fanimaginary pootang, but the fact that JKR keeps giving out all this new information in interviews and stuff clouds everything a lot. Geez, just imagine if Tolkien had gone on Good Morning Great Britain or whatever.

y'know, dumbledore really didn't surprise me, I actually thought, as I'm reading it, that it sounded like if not outright, he was seriously leaning that way. And then the guy he was sweet on turned out to be such a dick--the more I read about dumbledore, the more tragic the character becomes; and tragic in the wonderfully human way, the icky-shudder-god-that-blows way.

Not to mention that it's not like Rowling is exactly hurting for attention or book sales. Doesn't she limmit her public appearences in the US to about 2-3 a year.

Yeah, someone today in my math class was like, "Oh yeah, I saw that whole 'Dumbledore is gay' thing in the newspaper. She's just doing it to get more attention and money." I didn't say it out loud, but I was just like, "Wait, she needs more money and attention?" Plus, like Sapphires said, someone asked. It's not like someone was asking a question about his offer to be Minister or something and she was like, "Well, he was gay- OOPS! Did I just say that out loud?" Someone asked specifically about his love life, right?

Honestly, it's ridiculous, some people's reactions. It doesn't matter. He's still Dumbledore, people. It doesn't change anything, really, if you think about it.

Yeah, because they obviously thought it was inappropriate to mention that Mr. and Mrs. Weasley are married. We didn't need to know that they're straight. Ewww...

If Tolkien had gone on to discuss Middle Earth and was asked the question "So, what about it's history?" then our children's children would still be watching.

Lol, yeah.

Fifty years later:

Tolkien: "So the thing is, Lerdan The Obscure was actually related to his wife, distantly...well, really, who in Middle Earth isn't? Well, people without wives, for one thing..."

Interviewer: *is a skeleton*

God bless that brave, brave man with the funny name.

Also, can I marry your icon please?
