I've had a long flailing session this afternoon. My brain exploded from squee and now it's all over the character turnarounds on the wall.

SKUNK HAIR.

I'm seriously concerned. They're not letting people know that it's a musical, and on top of that... Johnny's below pitch.

The last thing I want to see for Sweeney is another Butler job.

This score is practically an opera. I'm already wishing they dubbed it.

Cerveris did a similar job with the character but still had the voice... why?!

Yeah, the look of it is good, and the actors look good, and then the one bit of Johnny singing they show is...completely and utterly underwhelming. That's not a voice that strikes fear into the hearts of men.

I hate to be gloomy but you expressed my thoughts exactly. There's some serious singin' to be done in this...and I'm not sure any of these lovely actors are up to it.

Although they did CLAIM Sondheim was good with the casting...

Yeah, that was sort of my thoughtline too. Dear Johnny's putting up a fight, but...

From: [identity profile] havocs-roman.livejournal.com
I agree with the concern. I'm not terribly knowledgeable about the show, but what I've seen/heard so far indicates that it's got a terribly demanding score, and Mr. Depp... er...

I love Tim Burton and his exceptionally talented cast, and all that good stuff, but "OMG, I totally cast my pet leading man and my wife because they were TEH BEST for the parts!1!" wears thin after 1034 movies together. just admit that you cast them because they're your friends, Tim, you wouldn't be the first...

Though in all fairness, I'm still squeeing over the casting of Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin, and, no matter how much I love Alan and his voice... there's no universe in which he could sing. Just... no. And there he is, and I'll endure it with a grin, think of his acting and squee a bit more. It's only fair that I do as much for Johnny (without the squeeing).

That was my first reaction: Why is he not on pitch? That and, hey! His *right* arm is complete, not just his arm. XD

Urgh, Butler. *shudder* We do not speak of that monstrosity, but only watch the film in French because it's better.

I'm glad that I'm seeing the actual musical before the movie when it comes to Toronto.

I agree. I do not like this marketing ploy where musicals are not really shown as such.

And I love the Cerveris version. Not that it has anythingt to do with anything else -- just thought I should mention it.

Oh god. I'm at work, so I can't hear anything, but it looks phenomenal. I love this musical so much, and the score is so beautiful...I just hope this doesn't turn into another Phantom of the Opera - i.e. best if watched on mute.

In other news...your journal background! It's all purple and ghost-y! I love it!

For some reason, while I could get picture from that link I could barely hear anything! The Yahoo trailer site worked properly though, in case anyone else is having a similar problem: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809834155/video/4367764/standardformat/

I can't wait for this movie to come out! Bye bye Jack Sparrow, hellooooo Sweeney!

FINALLY IT HAS ARRIVED!!!! When I saw this trailer I was basically on the floor squealing in glee!!

I like the visuals, the actors look awesome, Depp will be able to act the part hands down...but singing...I dont know...I'll have to wait and see.

Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin(I squeed every time he came on screen), Tim Burton went into my mind and took out my dreams because thats just heaven right there for me! Alan will have fun with such an evil role (see eyebrow raise in trailer). Sahsa Baron Cohen looks hilarious also.

I'm sure that this movie will be fine, I cant wait to see my favorite musical adapted on the big screen. I just ask that it is on key with the music.

OMG I don't care if Johnny's singing it a little off (and if he still sounds like Jack Sparrow), because it has Johnny, and Bellatrix, and Snape, and Johnny, and Wormtail, and GILES, and SQUEE!

(and if he still sounds like Jack Sparrow)
Ha ha, that was my first thought when I heard him in the trailer. I mean, is it his fault or ours? Have we just become too accustomed to hearing him as Jack Sparrow in the last several years? Usually, his characters are pretty distinct.

Also, I heard GILES may have been cut out. Sad.

Yeah, and I know Christopher Lee (who cannot ever, ever get a break) was too. And yeah... I think Johnny's been playing Jack Sparrow just a little too long, because he totally still sounds like him. Not that I'm complaining...

Once my brain got over the omgwtf of Johnny singing I fell in love with the visual look of this film. I like the contrast of colors in the past/present time. and I am loving the costumes. have you people seen Helena's By the Sea orange dress? crazy but awesome. I'm still not sure abuot Johnny's singing-I need to hear more.

I personally like that little teeny microbite of Johnny singing. It seems...somewhat Bowie-esque.

From: [identity profile] brainchild129.livejournal.com
Since I know you get into that sort of thing, Cleo, I should point out that Dante Ferretti is doing the production design and Colleen Atwood is doing the costume.

Man, this film is going to be gorgeous. I cannot wait.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Awesome--I figured Atwood would be on board because she usually does Burtons (doesn't she? I know she did Sleepy Hollow). I'm already totally in love with HBC's "sunny" dresses, if you will.

Yep - she did the costumes for Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, and Big Fish.

Didn't she also do Lemony Snicket? There's a dress on the daughter in the trailer (you can see it if you slow it down a good bit, it's when someone yanks her off her bed: kind of blue-and-yellow diamond patterned sleeves) that reminds me in a random way of the detailing from Snicket.

Date: 2007-10-05 02:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] brainchild129.livejournal.com
Yes, she did that too (and I still want some of Violet's dresses from that movie, 'cause they are just that pretty).

Date: 2007-10-05 02:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
For real, her primary dress and her coat were gorgeous. I think it was the sleeves that reminded me--Atwood seems to dig sleeve action a lot for some reason.

Finally! Damn, I keep saying to myself "gee, I'm going to get bored of these Burton/HBC/Depp movies eventually." But then they keep putting out amazing stuff like this and it seems like I never will.

Also, I don't think we've heard from this trailer enough of Johnny's voice to really have an opinion on it just yet. I say wait for the movie or a leaked track or something, at least.

OH MY GOD SO HAPPY. I'm completely and shamelessly fangirling. Over the musical as well as our favorite pirate. I do have to admit that this is one of the times when I'm very glad that I am not a singer, because I feel like I'd be rather disappointed in the singing, and... yeah. best just not to think about it. Hearts for Sweeney Todd.

Date: 2007-10-05 06:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kelcea.livejournal.com
Yay! Depp and Rickman in the same movie makes me fangirl twice as hard.
I don't know much about the story or musical, but any movie these two are in, with Burton, cannot fail in my standards.
And I don't know the first thing about singing, so any off-pitch what-have-yous will be lost on me. Which is fine.

Date: 2007-10-05 06:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ellaafleck.livejournal.com
It looks like a good movie...and then the singing. And if I wasn't an obsessive Sondheim fangirl I would be very confused. Oh Johnny. This is not Wicked. Sondheim, people, Sondheim. Different kind of singing. Ah well. Hopefully they'll pull off "A Little Priest" and I will be satisfied.

PS who the heck is playing Anthony?
