So I did watch all of Infamous last night, and I scribbled down the Harper Lee bit that I liked:
I read an interview with Frank Sinatra, in which he said about Judy Garland, 'Every time she sings, she dies a little. That's how much she gave.' It's true for writers, too, who hope to create something lasting. They die a little getting it right. And then the book comes out... there's a dinner, maybe there's a prize... and then comes the inevitable, very American question: What's next? But the next thing can be so hard... because now you know what it demands.
I identify with that last sentence a lot, let's just put it that way.

Meanwhile, I went to see Stardust again, this time with Brett the Vet, and somehow we got the time wrong and walked in "early"--just as the movie was starting. Which means that we missed all but the last five seconds of Beowulf, and every other trailer besides (sob). But yay Stardust! I did notice something fun this time around: Septimus has two rows of buttons on the front of his--waistcoat?--and each one has a little 7 on it. Heh. And there were actually other people in the theater, which surprised me.

Also: Six New Movies, None in the Top 3. ("Matthew Vaughn's fantasy epic Stardust, based on the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess, continued to hold up well..." YAY! Also: It's not a graphic novel! Graphic novels don't have entire pages of text! It's just a short novel with very pretty pictures!)

Paul Haggis Talks 'Bond 22' & His Vision For 007. Well, if he is, as he says, the one who came up with the shower scene in Casino Royale, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Creepy Plot Details on Shyamalan's 'The Happening.' Warning: I read the spoiler myself, and I can't tell for sure, but it may actually describe the end of the movie. Be warned.

Director's Guild Just Says 'No' to Screeners. Which sucks for smaller movies whose best chance at being seen at all is to send screeners to voters' homes, of course.

I'm amused that they've replaced Katie Holmes with Maggie Gyllenhall! At first I was just thinking "Yay, I like Maggie!", but then I thought the name Rachel Dawes looked just a little too familiar. I checked back, and yep, it's definitely the same character.

Haha... but really, great catch. Maggie Gyllenhall is SUUUUCH a better actress. I'm excited!

All the brothers have their numbers worked into their costumes in awesome ways; they've all got it in the fabric somehow, plus other details (like the "7" buttons).

Here's Septimus' costume (http://cgi.ebay.com/1054-STARDUST-Septimus-Mark-Strong-MOVIE-COSTUMES_W0QQitemZ320148536192QQihZ011QQcategoryZ60345QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) with "VII" all over his tunic, for example, and his buckle (http://cgi.ebay.com/2047-STARDUST-Septimus-Mark-Strong-MOVIE-PROPS_W0QQitemZ320148916010QQihZ011QQcategoryZ60345QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem), and Primus' belt (http://cgi.ebay.com/2006-STARDUST-Primus-Jason-Flemyng-Belt-MOVIE-PROPS_W0QQitemZ320146657855QQihZ011QQcategoryZ60345QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

If you search Ebay for "Stardust costume" or "Stardust prop," they're selling a lot of the hero and stunt versions. Check completed listings too, cause a bunch of them have ended.

It's both a book and a graphic novel! Sort of. It was published by DC Comics first, with the full text and glossy color illustrations. So it's not a graphic novel in the traditional comic book sense, but it was a... novel with graphics. And then published in the text-only format later.

And that quote is beautiful.

Heh heh, I remember telling my mother that they were ging to make a HP musical. Book-musicals can go either way (Wicked is a smash, but it annoys me; Lestat flopped, but I love it anyway) so we'll see.

"Bad breath is more like a social disease"- WEST SIDE STORY FTW!

Yeah, I have the Vess-illustrated edition, and I still consider it a novel, not a GN. To me, a GN is primarily told in pictures, with text dialogue and possibly some "voiceover" text. Watchmen had "documents" between each chapter, but it still wasn't traditional-style narrative. Of course, that may be an unnecessarily tight definition, but there you are. : )

And yeah, I was so struck by the Infamous quote when I saw the end of the movie. The way Sandra Bullock reads the lines, too, is great--very slowly and very sadly, and you can tell she's not talking just about Capote, but also about To Kill a Mockingbird.

Oh, that's fantastic. I hate that you can't even see those details--I mean, I love it when costume departments do that, when they put in all these wonderful little details that no one but the actors see, but at the same time, I hate that so much of it is lost on the viewer.

Heh. Thomas Rick's book on Iraq Fiasco is one of the books for my history class, and there's a huge list of contractions at the beginning (DoD, IADs, and the like); at the very bottom it says "List compilied by Bill Bye the Science Guy"

Well, if he is, as he says, the one who came up with the shower scene in Casino Royale, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Hee, no problem. As for the movie, I don't know what kind of TV/cable you have, but I just trolled our digital cable channels until I found it again. I think Capote's on some time tomorrow, in fact. Beats waiting for Netflix, if you don't mind appointment TV.

I hear you. I'm always excited when DVDs have costume documentaries, because I want to see more! FIDM in Los Angeles always does a movie costume exhibit around Oscar time-- all the costume design-nominated movies have several costumes there, and then they usually have one or two from other movies that have come out in the past year. They do a TV one at Emmy time, too; that one's up right now. Fingers crossed for having some good Stardust costumes in the 2008 exhibit!

You know, I got Stardust at my used bookstore, and was having such a hard time getting into it. And then I realized it is supposed to have pictures, and my copy is just a straight novel. Which sort of sucks. Oh well. I still need to see the movie too.

Also, Bill Nye The Science Guy? He had a PBS show a while ago that seemed like it would piss off people, but isn't he sort of low-key to get pissed at? If you are going to go at Bill Nye, you might as well go for someone bigger than that.

From the Bond link:

Meanwhile, in a forthcoming interview with CHUD.com, Haggis was asked whether rumours rampant in the British press last month - that Bond 22 would be jokier in tone - were true. “No,” Haggis simply replied, before stating that Bond 22 will be tonally in line with Casino Royale.

Yeah, I didn't see Crash, but I had heard enough about it that when I saw Haggis was writing Casino Royale (this was way before it was released, when all the hype about Craig was just "Bond is blond! He's gonna suck!"*) my eyebrows did rise a little. But as we know now, he managed to turn out a very very good Bond film (and a good film in general) so hopefully he keeps that going with the next one.

And yes, going back to campy Bond would have broken my heart too. It's like, why screw this up when you got it so right before? Although sarcastic Bond I don't mind, as I can never get enough of Daniel Craig being sarcastic, for some reason. *g*

*And I'll admit to being one of those people, at least until I saw Layer Cake.

From: [identity profile] cleolinda.livejournal.com
Oh, sarcastic is fine. And there was actually a lot of humor in CR, but it was very, very dry, or at least delivered that way ("That last round nearly killed me"). In fact, I'm sure that line could have been camp as hell if they'd wanted it to be that way. I was sitting here struggling with how to explain it, so I looked "camp" up in the online American Heritage dictionary, and one of the definitions is, in part, "deliberately artificial." And I think that's exactly what the worst of the Bond movies were.

Haggis also created the show EZ Streets (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115161/), which I once described in a review as "enjoyably bleak." (Compromised cops and bad guys in a decaying city: Ken Olin, Joe Pantoliano, Deborah Farantino...Carl Lumbly as the mayor...Wow, I remember a bunch of it and it ran 10 years ago!) It lasted only a season and got almost negative ratings, but I found it very compelling, so I have to give him props for that. Even as I have NO desire ever to see Crash.
